Copenhagen Largest The Copenhagen program, according to Mike McBride, director of foreign studies, has been operating since 1959, and Traditionally sends the largest number of Whittier students abroad. Specifically designed for Whittier students, the program allows a group of 20 to 25 students to spend the fall semester in Copenhagen, Denmark. Last fall 34 students went through the program. The program is run in conjunction with the Danish International Study Committee, which invites over 500 U.S. college students each year to study in a Copenhagen university.

European Education In Copenhagen, the students take classes taught by Danish faculty on European subjects, in a European environment, thereby experiencing what McBride calls "a different approach to education in general." In addition, students learn about Danish culture first hand by living with a Danish host family during the semester. A week or two of travel time is also allotted. During this time the students are free to visit other parts of Europe on their own, or take an organized group tour of the Soviet Union. McBride also described overseas programs for those who specialize in the areas of Chinese or Spanish. Chinese language students can study abroad for a semester or a year at the Beijing Teacher's College in Beijing, China. Hsiao-Min Wang, profes sor of Chinese and head of the Foreign Language department, noted the tremendous success that students in the past have had with the Beijing program, par ticularly in their improvement of language skills.

Operating since the early 1980's, there have been four participants this year. This program, unlike the Copenhagen program, runs on an exchange basis where China sends "exchange scholars," teachers looking to expand their knowledge of the U.S., to Whittier in return for undergraduates. Morelia Exchange The Morelia program in Mexico also operates on an exchange basis, where Mexican teachers of English come to Whittier to take classes, and the Spanish department sends Whittier students to study in Morelia. Update on Runner's Marathon Result On February 27th Mike Montgomery ran the LA Marathon. Last week this paper erroneously reported his time to be 2:17.38. Or was it an error? There seems to have been some controversy as to what Montgomery's time was. Greg Phillips. Whittier College track coach, believes that 40 minutes should be tacked on to the time to make it accurate.
