It has again brought home to me quite clearly how wrong it is to use God as a stop-gap for the incompleteness of our knowledge. If in fact the frontiers of knowledge are being pushed back (and that is bound to be the case), then God is being pushed back with them, and is therefore continually in retreat. We are to find God in what we know, not in what we don’t know; God wants us to realize his presence, not in unsolved problems but in those that are solved. Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2011. xviii + 181 pp. ISBN 978–9004194533 (hbk.) The theme of the book is veneration of angels in religions in late antiquity (ca. 150–ca. 450 c.e.). Rangar Cline consults a wealth of archaeological and lit- erary evidence and shows that there was a shared terminology for angels in the Roman Empire, which implies that the term angelos was used across religions. Angeloi designate intermediate beings, beings that were believed to exist between gods and humans. Traditionally, they were thought to be present at springs, wells, and fountains, and they could be contacted by means of rituals, amulets, and invocations. The veneration of these beings took diffferent forms in diffferent regions and cultural contexts. The book has a preface, six chapters, and a conclusion, and includes pic- tures. In chapter one (“Introduction: The Words of Angels”), Cline defijines angels and gives a survey of the pagan-Christian discourse on them by means of the writings of Origen of Alexandria and Augustine of Hippo. Cline suggests that “the prominence of angeli in early Christianity is due to the success of early Christian authorities in defijining a system of orthodox Christian beliefs about, and attitudes towards, angeli that were distinct from non-Christian, and other Christian, beliefs about such beings” (p. 2). In addition to the term ange- los, Cline also presents a critical discussion of the use of the terms “Hellenism,” “monotheism,” and “polytheism.” Cline’s study of angels builds on Glenn Bow- ersock’s approach to Hellenism and Greek language in late antiquity: Bower- sock saw Hellenism as a possibility to give local expressions a more eloquent and cosmopolitan form. -

Teilhard de Chardin’s Vision of Science, Religion and Planetary Humanity: A Challenge to the Contemporary World Ursula King [email protected] Abstract Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a great thinker, scientist, and mystic – he was above all an extraordinary human being whose inspiring vision still remains far too little known. He visited South Africa twice, in 1951 and 1953, to undertake palaeontological research and collaborate with South African colleagues. Throughout his life, but especially towards its end, he was much interested in the future of planetary humanity and he always stressed the importance of seeing, of having a vision that pulls us forward and upward. For him, life is vision. I examine how this vision – embracing science, religion and the future of humankind – presents a challenge to the contemporary world and an inspiration to create a better future for all. I first look at our world in crisis, dominated by science, but politically fragmented, suffering from much injustice, poverty and violence. Where are we going? Schleiermacher and Otto
Jacqueline Mariña 1 Friedrich Schleiermacher and Rudolf Otto Two names often grouped together in the study of religion are Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1884) and Rudolf Otto (1869-1937). Central to their understanding of religion is the idea that religious experience, characterized in terms of feeling, lies at the heart of all genuine religion. In his book On Religion Schleiermacher speaks of religion as a “sense and taste for the Infinite.”1 It is “the immediate consciousness of the universal existence of all finite things, in and through the infinite” and is “to know and to have life in immediate feeling” (OR, p. 36). In The Christian Faith Schleiermacher grounds religion in the immediate self-consciousness and the “feeling of absolute dependence.”2 Influenced by Schleiermacher, Otto too grounds religion in an original experience of what he calls “the numinous,” which “completely eludes apprehension in terms of concepts” and is as such “ineffable;” it can only be grasped through states of feeling. (The Idea of the Holy, p. 5). In this paper I will critically examine their views on religion as feeling. The first part of the paper will be devoted to understanding how both men conceived of feeling and the reasons why they believed that religion had to be understood in its terms. In the second and third parts of the paper I will develop the views of each thinker individually, contrast them with one another, and discuss the peculiar problems that arise in relation to the thought of each. Common Elements in Schleiermacher and Otto Both Schleiermacher and Otto insist that religion cannot be reduced to ethics, aesthetics or metaphysics.
