The Intangible Warrior Culture of Japan: Bodily Practices, Mental Attitudes, and Values of the Two-sworded Men from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-first Centuries. Anatoliy Anshin Ph.D. Dissertation UNSW@ADFA 2009 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis would not have seen the light without the help of more people than I can name individually. I am particularly grateful to Professor Stewart Lone, UNSW@ADFA, and Professor Sandra Wilson, Murdoch University, for their guidance and support while supervising my Ph.D. project. All of their comments and remarks helped enormously in making this a better thesis. A number of people in Japan contributed significantly to producing this work. I am indebted to Ōtake Risuke, master teacher of Tenshinshō-den Katori Shintō-ryū, and Kondō Katsuyuki, director of the Main Line Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu, for granting interviews and sharing a wealth of valuable material during my research. I thank Professor Shima Yoshitaka, Waseda University, for his generous help and advice. I would like to express my infinite thankfulness to my wife, Yoo Sun Young, for her devotion and patience during the years it took to complete this work. As for the contribution of my mother, Margarita Anshina, no words shall convey the depth of my gratitude to her. 1 CONTENTS Acknowledgements…………..…………………………………………………….……1 Contents…………………………..……………………………………………………...2 List of Illustrations……………………………………………………………………….5 Conventions……………………………………………………………………………...6 List of Author’s Publications…………………………………………………………….8 INTRODUCTION……………………………………………………………………….9

1 Mission Mission gram is attracting the best talents as ever. Several of our new members have turned down some of most prestigious positions elsewhere. Our ongoing and future projects fascinate scientists around the globe. Building an international institute from scratch was not easy. But thanks to the effort by our colleagues, staff, the University, and MEXT, we got off the ground very quickly and incredibly well. Stay tuned what we will discover in the next few years. Our Mission Our mission is very simple. Just like when you looked up the night sky when you were young, human beings are naturally drawn to basic and profound questions. Where do we come from? Where are we going? How did the Universe begin? Does it have an end? How does it work? The first step to answer these questions is to understand what the Universe is made of. At the Frontier We are making tremendous progress. David Spergel (PI) and Eiichiro Komatsu (Affiliate Senior Re- searcher) discovered that 96% of the Universe is unknown. Dark Matter, that makes up about a quarter of the Universe, is responsible for creating stars and galaxies in the Universe, that allowed the solar system and us to be born. On the other hand, Dark Energy, about 70% of the Universe, is ripping our Universe apart. The history of the Universe has been based on the battle of these two titans. They are the genomes of the Universe; many of our members are working together, just about to start a cosmic Director Hitoshi Murayama genome project, using the Subaru telescope and many other experiments.

  • The Consumption of English-Language Music Videos on Youtube in Japan
The Consumption of English-language Music Videos on YouTube in Japan Amanda Gillis-Furutaka Goldsmiths, University of London PhD Music Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2017 1 I declare that, unless otherwise stated, all the work presented in this thesis is my own. July, 2017 2 Acknowledgements I wish to thank my husband Hikaru, and three sons, Oto, Gen and On Furutaka for their patient support and help throughout my research. I also wish to thank my Japanese and non-Japanese colleagues for distributing my survey questionnaires and letting me test my ideas with them. Special thanks go to Professor Thomas Robb for his advice on inputting my survey data. Finally, I owe the fact that I have managed to complete this project to the wonderful support, advice and help provided by my supervisor, Professor Keith Negus. 3 Abstract Euro-American (Western) popular music has been imported, performed and adapted to Japanese musical sensibilities since 1854. It influenced Japanese popular music throughout the 20th century and can be heard everywhere these days in shops, on university campuses, at school festivals, on the radio and television, and at the live shows of touring artists. Although record sales indicate the dominance of the domestic industry, especially the J-pop market, young Japanese people are actively consuming Western music through YouTube. This study demonstrates the eclectic musical tastes of young Japanese people today and the role of YouTube as a music platform. Using a mixed methods approach that combines a survey of over 500 university undergraduates with interviews and focus group work with 82 students, a rich description is presented of the ways in which music videos on YouTube are consumed mainly through mobile digital devices.

Caldwell, Chair Japanese creative media – particularly, its comics, animation, and video games – has found success globally, but it is primarily a product made for and by a domestic audience. What characterizes the success of its various creative industries on the domestic level, before they reach out to global spheres? This dissertation attempts to provide an answer to this question by examining the logics of franchise media production in Japan. I conduct ethnographic fieldwork into Japan’s manga and anime industries, as well as close analyses of concomitant transmedia texts, in order to demonstrate the collective authorship that surrounds the production of contemporary media in these industries today. By focusing on the production of texts in commercial outlets such as Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump and Toei Animation Studies, I show how large-scale, franchise media in Japanese production is organized, managed, and distributed through small networks of mangaka, ii assistants, editors, and readers, as well as large networks of professionals including animators, directors, scriptwriters, voice actors, and producers.
