Deconstructing Jesus: From Modernity to Postmodernity to Faith1 Rollin G. Grams April, 2011 Director of the Robert C. Cooley Center for the Study of Early Christianity Associate Professor of New Testament These are exciting days in Jesus studies. Much is being written on the historical Jesus, and significant challenges to old paradigms in New Testament Christology are being presented. The labours of sensible scholarship are not going to be found on the shelves of your local large bookshop, since they do not sell as well as whatever claims to expose conspiracies, reveal secrets, and unsettle orthodoxy. But solid scholarship is doing more than just exposing the latest hype for what it is: New Testament scholars are still making interesting contributions through the exegetical task of theology. A part of what we are seeing in the field involves a new set of assumptions. Modernist methods of Biblical scholarship, along with its ‘consensuses’ and ‘assured results’, are happily under scrutiny. But Postmodernity can take several forms. Positively, enquiry from a position of belief rather than doubt is now seen as inevitable if not even encouraged. Negatively, a deconstructive Postmodernity—in many ways a ‘MostModernity’—has simply ratcheted up the level of doubt to higher levels of scepticism and turned from trusting methods of enquiry to playing with methods of enquiry in order to arrive at alternative constructions of truth.2 This deconstructive version of Postmodernity takes us into a world of scholarship presented as the exposure of conspiracies, secrets, and scandals. To be sure, challenges to orthodox teaching about Jesus were also the order of the day in the Modern period. -
Maurice Casey (2014): Jesus. Evidence and Argument Or Mythicist Myths"
Review by an outsider of ancient history and new testament studies of "Maurice Casey (2014): Jesus. Evidence and Argument or Mythicist Myths" Thomas Colignatus http://thomascool.eu May 11 & 12 2014 Summary Professor Casey's book opposes the historical evidence for Jesus to the mythical origin of the story. Historicism is generally accepted in academic New Testament Studies, mythicism is often adhered to by non-scholars on the internet. The review uses the analogy of Santa Claus to bring forth a point that may have been missed by both professor Casey and the mythicists who he wishes to expose. For Santa Claus there is the historical bishop Nicolas of Myra (Turkey) but it would be inaccurate to call him the "historical Santa Claus" since the origin of the story is rather the neolithical myth of the Norse god Wodan who rides the sky on the back of his horse Sleipnir. The Church imposed the story of Nicolas on the ancient myth in order to control the heresy. If the historical Jesus was a mere man, he couldn't have walked on water or risen from death, and the story of the resurrection reminds of many similary mythical stories from prehistoric times. For Jesus the religious meaning and the resurrection are the defining issue, for otherwise why tell the story from generation to generation ? If there was a historical preacher, healer and exorcist who got associated with already existing ancient myths of resurrection, then it becomes awkward to speak about a historical Jesus, just like with the "historical Santa Claus", because such historical Jesus is at distance from what defines him for the story that people consider relevant to relate. -

Maurice Casey gives a detailed examination of Matthew 23.23–36 and Luke 11.39–51 and demonstrates that the evangelists used two different Greek translations of an Aramaic source, which can be re- constructed. He overturns the conventional model of Q as a single Greek document, and shows that Jesus said everything in the orig- inal Aramaic source. His further analysis of Matthew 11.2–19 and Luke 7.18–35 shows the evangelists editing one Greek translation of an Aramaic source. The same is true of Matthew 12.22–32//Luke 11.14–23, for which Mark (3.20–31) utilised a different Aramaic source. A complex model of Q is thus proposed. Casey offers a compelling argument that Aramaic sources behind part of Q are of extremely early date, and should make a significant contribution to the quest of the historical Jesus. For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1.0 Introduction Q, the so-called lost sayings source behind the gospels of Matthew and Luke, is often introduced to undergraduate New Testament students at the beginning of their education about the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. For some scholars, such as Burton Mack, Q represents the original words of Jesus, preserved in the Synoptic Gospels.1Others, such as Alan Kirk, have attempted to divide Q into redactional layers, determining in what order Q took shape and how the separate layers speak to different concerns of the early Christian church.2 However, no extant copy of Q exists. On some level, Q should be approached as a scholarly tool, not as an assured finding of critical New Testament scholarship. -

NTWRIGHT Jesus and the Victory of God: Christian origins and the Question of God Vol 2 SPCK, London 1996, xxi + 741 pp £30.00 ISBN 0 281 04717 0 Let it be said at the outset: Jesus and the Victory of God (hereafter JVG) is one of the best books on the historical Jesus - indeed, in NT studies - for years. Tom Wright has thought long and deep before publishing this stimulating, exciting and readable work, and the wait has been worth it. 1 This is not a dull piece of historical criticism which endlessly debates whether Jesus could or could not have said this or that (although it contributes to such discussions): Wright works on a bigger canvas and, in my judgement, manages to cut through much sterile debate by coming at questions in a fresh way. And he writes accessibly and readably - not qualities often associated with this field of study! Good though it is, it is also highly controversial, as a stream of reviews (many with responses by Wright) shows.2 Wright has been accused of ditching the idea of the 'second coming' of Jesus (on which, see further below), although he himself claims 'eschatology' (carefully defined) as the central theme of the ministry and beliefs of Jesus. The placing of the category of return from exile at the heart of Wright's reading of Jesus, with the claim that the majority of Jews of Jesus' day would have seen themselves as not having really returned from the Babylonian exile of the sixth century BC, has met with lots of questions and discussion. -
