I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract After being burnt down by the liberal politics of the university, I call for a (re)imagining of its structure that can offer hope for those seeking a home in academia. This thesis asks the question, “how can we thinkact differently?” by engaging with a plurality of frames that offer grass-roots possibilities for the students, researchers, staff, and faulty members whose identities and politic are often targeted by the reproduction of status quo. I suggest a reaching out unto anarchist, abolitionist, and Indigenous liberatory frames as means of moving beyond the traditions of the neo liberal university, towards emotional, just, and actionable futurities. iii Acknowledgements I acknowledge that the work of this thesis is largely credited to the continuum of hearts that joined me in my ongoing process to becoming. THE UNHAPPY MARRIAGE OF MARXISM AND FEMINISM TOWARDS A MORE PROGRESSIVE UNION Heidi I . Hartmann This paper argues that the relation between marxism and feminism has, in all the forms it has so far taken, been an unequal one . While both marxist method and feminist analysis are necessary to an understanding of capi- talist societies, and of the position of women within them, in fact femi- nism has consistently been subordinated . The paper presents a challenge to both marxist and radical feminist work on the "woman question", and argues that what it is necessary to analyse is the combination of patriarchy and capitalism . It is a paper which, we hope, should stimulate considerable debate . The 'marriage' of marxism and feminism has been like the marriage of husband and wife depicted in English common law : marxism and feminism are one, and that one is marxism (1). Recent attempts to integrate marxism and feminism are unsatisfactory to us as feminists because they subsume the feminist struggle into the 'larger' struggle against capital . To continue our simile further, either we need a healthier marriage or we need a divorce . The inequalities in this marriage, like most social phenomena, are no accident . Many marxists typically argue that feminism is at best less impor- tant than class conflict and at worst divisive of the working class . This political stance produces an analysis that absorbs feminism into the class struggle . Moreover, the analytic power of marxism with respect to capital has obscured its limitations with respect to sexism . We will argue here that while marxist analysis provides essential insight into the laws of historical development, and those of capital in particular, the categories of marxism are sex-blind . -

Version 13.1 Contents An Anarchist FAQ after ten years 3 2 An Anarchist FAQ after ten years 3 It is now ten years since “An Anarchist FAQ” (AFAQ) was officially released. A lot has happened over that time, unfortunately finishing it has not been one of them! Over that decade, AFAQ has changed considerably. It was initially conceived as a energy-saving device to stop anarchists having to continually make the same points against claims that “anarcho”-capitalism was a form of anarchism. As would be expected, the quality of the initial versions and sections were pretty mixed. Most of it was extremely good (even if we do say so ourselves!) and has required little change over the decade (mostly we have built upon and expanded the original material). A few bits were less good and have been researched more and rewritten. We have also, of course, made mistakes and corrected them when we have been informed about them or have discovered them ourselves. In general, though, our initial work has stood up well and while we were occasionally wrong on a few details, the general thrust of even these areas has been proven correct. Overall, our aim to produce an FAQ which reflected the majority of anarchist thought, both currently and historically from an international perspective, has been a success as shown by the number of mirrors, links and translations AFAQ has seen (being published by AK Press confirms this). Since the official release, AFAQ has changed. -

In the immediate aftermath, supposed allies of the social denounced the tactics and attempted to distance themselves from the more radical elements in this movement. In a strict breach of the statement of unity that the Olympic Resistance Network had articu- lated, social liberals who had little or no part in organizing any of the convergence took itupon themselves to denounce the violence of the protesters, not the violence of the police. -

From 1991 until 1996, the state and civil society signed a series of Peace Accords that promised to better meet the needs of the Maya, Xinka, Garífuna and non-Indigenous groups living there. In this context, how does the current educational system meet the varied needs of these groups? My research investigates the philosophy and praxis of Maya Indigenous knowledge (MIK) in broadly defined educational contexts through the stories of 17 diverse Maya professional women and men involved in educational reform that currently live and work in Guatemala City. How do they reclaim and apply their ancestral knowledge daily? What possible applications of MIK can transform society? The findings reveal that MIK promotes social change and healing within and outside institutionalized educational spaces and argues that academia needs to make room for Indigenous theorizing mainly in areas of education, gender, knowledge production, and nation building. I analyze these areas from anticolonial and critical Indigenous standpoints from which gender and Indigenous identities weave through the text. -
