The Association for Women in Mathematics: How and Why It Was
Mathematical Communities t’s 2011 and the Association for Women in Mathematics The Association (AWM) is celebrating 40 years of supporting and II promoting female students, teachers, and researchers. It’s a joyous occasion filled with good food, warm for Women conversation, and great mathematics—four plenary lectures and eighteen special sessions. The talks covered advances in algebraic K-theory and topologi- cal cyclic homology, geometric group theory, low dimensional topology relying on a mixture of combinatorial and analytic methods, classification of high- dimensional manifolds and more. Special emphasis was given to a recent breakthrough on the question of triangulability of high-dimensional mani- folds. Mathematics Subject Classification (2010): 55-xx, 57-xx, 19-xx. Introduction by the Organisers The workshop Topologie (2018) was organized by a team consisting of Mark Behrens (Notre Dame), Ruth Charney (Brandeis), Peter Teichner (Bonn) and Michael Weiss (M¨unster). It was unfortunate that Ruth Charney and Mark Behrens could not attend this time, but the list of invitees was managed by all four organizers, and as the meeting progressed the program for each day was decided on jointly by all four (communicating via skype and email). The preferred calendar month for this meeting used to be September, but we moved it to July (beginning with the 2016 meeting) to make it more attractive for international participants. The list of participants at this workshop indicates that this goal was achieved. It should also be noted that many of our invitees had to decide between Oberwolfach and a topology meeting running concurrently at the Newton Institute, Cambridge. There is no indication that this lowered the stan- dards, but it may have led to a greater-than-usual emphasis on low-dimensional topology at this meeting. -

This research conference highlights the accomplishments of women in mathematics and showcases the research of female mathematicians at all stages of their careers. We are grateful to the University of Maryland for hosting this symposium and to our sponsors and exhibitors Microsoft Research, NSF, NSA, NIST, Springer, Elsevier, Google, Wolfram and INTECH for their generous support. In 2011, the Association for Women in Mathematics celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a research conference, “40 Years and Counting, AWM’s Celebration of Women in Mathematics.” Participation at the anniversary conference greatly exceeded all expectations and motivated AWM to launch a series of biennial research symposia. The second AWM Symposium was held at Santa Clara University in 2013, and this symposium is the third event in the series. These symposia are designed to help support and nurture networks of female researchers in many areas of mathematics, to provide networking opportunities for junior and senior women to enhance career prospects and recognition. Writing Women in Mathematics Into Wikipedia
Writing Women in Mathematics into Wikipedia Marie A. Vitulli University of Oregon Eugene, OR 97403-1222 October 20, 2017 Abstract In this article I reflect upon the problemsconnected with writing women in mathematics into Wikipedia. I discuss some of the current projects and efforts aimed at increasing the visibility of women in mathe- matics on Wikipedia. I present the rules for creating a biography on Wikipedia and relate my personal experiences in creating such articles. I hope to provide the reader with the background and resources to start editing existing Wikipedia articles and the confidence to create new articles. I would also like to encourage existing editors to look out for and protect new articles about women mathematicians and submit new articles. 1 Introduction The twin problems of the paucity of women subjects and scarcity of women editors on Wikipedia are well known but no solutions are on the horizon. We can nevertheless take small steps to address these problems. In response to my concerns about these problems and in order to gain first-hand experience, I became a Wikipedia editor in 2013. In this article I will update and expand upon my article Writing Women in Mathematics into Wikipedia, which appeared in the May–June 2014 issue of the Association for Women in Mathematics Newsletter [8]. Since 2013 some things have improved on Wikipedia and others have remained more or less the same. I will first report on these and then relate some of my personal experiences as a Wikipedia editor. Briefly, this is how this article is organized. -

Many of these events of recent months and years have been fomented by internet communities that foster racism, sexism, and white male supremacy. As the work of Safiya Noble details beautifully, tech giants play a major role in the creation, growth, and support of these communities.
