4 Saint Joseph’s University SJU TENNIS COMPLEX

Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre foot- print. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s con- struction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team has compiled a record of 79-126 on Finnesey Courts since 1983. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the near- by Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were locat- ed where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

2009-10 Women’s Tennis 9 2008-09 YEAR IN REVIEW

Progress was the key during the 2008-09 season as the Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis program welcomed new head coach Ian Crookenden. A two-time national champion at UCLA, Crookenden was appointed director of tennis in August and began molding the program to a more competitive, year-round schedule. Leading the way for the Hawks were senior Krysta Contino, junior Jhennifer Kedzierski, sophomore Maggie Mullaney and freshman Laura Matz. The four combined to earn 44 of SJU’s 56 singles victories. The Hawks opened the season at the Towson 4+1 Invitational, and while there was no team scoring, Contino and freshman Melissa Glick started the year in good form with each recording singles victories. Opening dual matches versus Villanova, Saint Joseph’s got a win at No. 1 singles by Kedzierski, but the Hawks couldn’t earn another point over the remaining matches despite highly-contested sets. Saint Joseph’s would rebound for its first win of the season with a 6-1 win over Rider at home, winning five singles points and the doubles’ point. Hitting a more challenging portion of their schedule, the Hawks would drop their next five matches but got back in the win column at La Salle. Saint Joseph’s swept all six singles matches and blanked the Explorers in all three doubles matches for SJU’s first shutout of the season. The fall portion of the schedule came to a close as the Hawks dropped Laura Matz and Jhennifer Kedzierski combined to go a team-best a heart-breaking 4-3 decision to Delaware State before topping Lafayette, 12-8 in doubles, including an 11-8 mark at the top flight. 6-1, to end the fall season with a 3-7 mark. After a four-month break from competition, Saint Joseph’s returned Posting a 6-15 mark during the season, Saint Joseph’s was seeded to the court at the end of February versus Drexel. And while the Hawks 12th at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship. South Dakota, but minor injuries played havoc on Crookenden’s lineup as Even though their chance for a conference crown was gone, the the Hawks would drop the remaining four contests in Orlando. Hawks persevered and were dominant against St. Bonaventure. And while Saint Joseph’s posted another gutsy effort, the higher-seeded Colonials were too much, ending SJU’s season with a 4- 0 loss to finish tied for 11th. And despite the loss, it was a successful season for the Hawks under first-year head coach Ian Crookenden. Contino finished the all-time leader in wins at No. 5 singles, while Kedzierski has established herself as one of the top players in SJU history, accumulating 35 career wins for third all- time. With an experienced core of letterwinners returning and a talented class of newcomers, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis program will be on the rise.

THE HAWK The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in con- stant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die.” Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 50-year history. It has been select- ed as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.
