  • Partner Moves January - February
Lateral Partner Moves in London January - February 2018 REPRESENTATION – SEARCH – TEAM MOVES www.edwardsgibson.com Welcome to the latest round up of lateral partner moves in the legal market from Edwards Gibson where we look back at announced partner-level recruitment activity in London over the past two months and give you a ‘who’s moved where’ update. In all there was a total of 91 lateral partner moves announced in this round up – 22% down on the same period last year when the figures were artificially buoyed by the collapse of King & Wood Mallesons’ European verein. Although fewer than the preceding two years, the number of moves in this edition corresponds almost exactly to the statistical average over the same period for the past 5 years (see graph below). Lateral Partner Moves January - February 2014 2014.5 2015 2015.5 2016 2016.5 2017 2017.5 2018 140 140 120 120 100 100 80 80 60 60 40 40 20 20 No. of Partner Moves 0 0 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Year Mean No. of Moves 2014 - 2018 in the January - February Period A total of 7 firms hired three or more partners in the first two months of this year. Surprisingly, the most prolific recruiter was the traditionally ultra conservative all equity White Shoe firm Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy. Milbank snared a full half-dozen new partners – comprising a four-partner restructuring and corporate team, and a two-partner high yield US capital markets team - from fellow New Yorkers Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft and Shearman & Sterling. City of London Law Society Land Law Committee response to consultation on moving Land Registry operations into the private sector Introduction The City of London Law Society (“CLLS”) represents approximately 17,000 City lawyers through individual and corporate membership including some of the largest international law firms in the world. These law firms advise a variety of clients from multinational companies and financial institutions to Government departments, often in relation to complex, multi-jurisdictional legal issues. The CLLS responds to a variety of consultations on issues of importance to its members through its 19 specialist committees. This response in respect of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills Consultation on moving Land Registry operations into the private sector has been prepared by the CLLS Land Law Committee. This response is given by those members of the Land Law Committee listed at the end of this response. The following individuals/firms have asked to be excluded from this response - Daniel McKimm/Allen & Overy LLP, Jamie Chapman/Ashurst LLP, Ian Waring/Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP, Michael Edwards/Clifford Chance LLP, Bruce Dear/Eversheds LLP, Jayne Elkins/Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP, Victoria Hills/Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, James Barnes/Herbert Smith Freehills LLP, Martin Elliott/Linklaters LLP, Nick Jones/Simmons & Simmons LLP, John Nevin/Slaughter & May and Alison Hardy/Squire Patton Boggs (UK) LLP.‎ General comments For‎the‎purposes‎of‎our‎comments,‎we‎assume‎that‎a‎private‎company‎(known‎as‎“NewCo”‎in‎the‎ consultation) will take over the Land Registry. We make that assumption because of the tenor of the commentary in the consultation that privatisation with a long term contract between government and a private operator and risk transferred to the latter is the preferred model.

Spring Budget 2017 in overview Bradley Phillips, Asset Management Tax Group, PwC and CEB member—For tax professionals, Budget Day can often be a mixture of surprise, excitement and hard work, advising clients of the changes and think- ing about the implications for all the great tax advice given previously. Yesterday was different with very little that was surprising or requiring lots of immediate advice. I think we can all agree it was certainly not an ex- citing Budget. David Wilson, Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP—A few interesting technical amendments have been an- nounced, in particular to the rules limiting interest deductibility. However, there is not very much to write home about, and certainly nothing as significant to practitioners as some of the options put forward by the Office for Tax Simplification last week in their progress report on stamp duty simplification. The Chancellor’s speech referred to finding a better way, 'in the medium term', of taxing the digital part of the economy. This wasn’t reflected in any of the Budget papers, but it will be interesting to see if this theme is picked up in the Autumn Budget.
