Your dream photo shoot awaits…… Award-winning Lake District attraction, Ullswater ‘Steamers’, is offering a unique opportunity to step aboard for an exclusive Dawn Photography Cruise. It’s a completely different experience that lets you get out on the lake and capture that golden hour from a new perspective. “Some really good photographers will come just to have that unique experience, but for those who need guidance, I will be going through the technical aspect of photography. I will explain how best to take a shot, about the settings within the camera, using filters, and I will also set up a screen downstairs to go through processing.” Ticket prices for the Dawn Photography Cruise are £45 per person, which includes the cruise, photography expertise and complimentary tea/coffee on-board. Lost and Found Fungi Datasheet Amanita nivalis WHAT TO LOOK FOR? A white to greyish to pale grey/yellow-brown mushroom, cap 4 to 8 cm diameter, growing in association with the creeping Salix herbacea (“dwarf willow” or “least willow”), on mountain peaks and plateaus at altitudes of ~700+ m. Distinctive field characters include the presence of a volva (sac) at the base; a cylindrical stalk lacking a ring (although sometimes an ephemeral ring can be present); white to cream gills; striations on the cap margin to 1/3 of the radius; and sometimes remnants of a white veil still attached on the top of the cap. WHEN TO LOOK? Amanita nivalis, images © D.A. Evans In GB from August to late September, very rarely in July or October. WHERE TO LOOK? Mountain summits, and upland and montane heaths, where Salix herbacea is present (see here for the NBN distribution map of S. herbacea). A moderate number of sites are known, mostly in Scotland, but also seven sites in England in the Lake District, and four sites in Snowdonia, Wales. Many Scottish sites have not been revisited in recent years, and nearby suitable habitats may not have been investigated. Further suitable habitats could be present in mountain regions throughout Scotland; the Lake District, Pennines and Yorkshire Dales in England; and Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons in Wales. MY FRIENDS, THE MOUNTAINS 23 MY FRIENDS, THE MOUNTAINS BY H. W. TURNBULL Read before the Alpine Club, October I, 1946 HE first mountain that I ever took an interest in was my very own, heaped up with a spade on the sunny sands of Barmouth. We children had been building a sand castle of the usual conical precision; but I, the younger, tired of it and preferred to fashion some • thing rougher and more elongated and, when asked what it was, declared it to be a mountain. Nor was it unlike the shape of the neighbouring Cader Idris which had, it would seem, impressed itself upon a child's mind. Even then I realised how very pleasant sounding was the word mountain, and how very pleasant were the shape and texture of the slopes and the loosely hung summit ridge swinging from point to point with one supreme, but not too supreme, central top. Would the same spell have been woven round those friendly shapes I wonder, had the name been Robinson ? But Cader Idris was dis tinctive and appealing : one fastened on the syllables even before one knew what they meant ; and interest was considerably increased when I learnt that my father had climbed to its top. That early experience was over fifty years ago, and it seemed to set a standard to which all proper mountains should conform, of shape, bulk, wildness and benignity. It presented a whole class of mountains as friends at first sight, wherever they were met in later years, the Bowfells and Mis chabels and the Cruachans.
