    African American Philanthropy Erica L. Ball, Ph.D. candidate in History, GC, CUNY Introduction Despite what many believe, African Americans have maintained a rich tradition of philanthropy. From as early as the eighteenth century to the present day, African-Americans have donated their time and resources to a variety of philanthropic organizations and causes, whether they be community-based mutual aid organizations, churches, or major political movements. According to Emmett Carson, three major strains have dominated the patterns of African American philanthropy: humanitarian aid, designed to ameliorate individual and community hardship; institutional development or self-help regarding the establishment of churches, schools, and commercial enterprises for black communities; and movements for social change "from the abolition of slavery to the elimination of all legal, educational, and economic barriers to racial equality." Surprisingly, few African-Americans define their traditions of giving as "philanthropy." Surveys indicate that many African Americans see their donations of time and money as unremarkable, and believe that "philanthropy" is a term reserved for multimillionaires, many black donors would not describe their behavior as philanthropic and are uncomfortable with the term. Consequently, many development officers and board members argue that educational programs must be at the forefront of black philanthropic efforts for the twenty-first century. Researchers predict several new trends in the charitable giving patterns of the African American population that will result from political, social and demographic transformations that first began in the 1960s. Driskell (https://www.artnews.com/t/david-c-driskell/) mounted the exhibition “Two Centuries of Black American Art (https://www.artnews.com/t/two-centuries-of-black- american-art/)” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition staked a claim for the profound and indelible contributions of black and African American art makers since the earliest days of the country and Driskell, who died last week (https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/david-c-driskell-dead-1202682906/) at the age 88, forever changed art history. His legacy is enduring, impacting generations of artists, curators, scholars, collectors, and more in the four decades since “Two Centuries of Black American Art” traveled to institutions across the country. In May 2000, ARTnews published a profile of Driskell by renowned journalist Pamela Newkirk (https://www.artnews.com/t/pamela-newkirk/). The occasion was Driskell receiving his 10th honorary degree, from Colby College in Maine, and a traveling show of artworks from his personal collection making a stop at the High Museum in Atlanta.     celebrity-obituary Aleigha Hamilton 4/11/16 William Henry Cosby, Jr., who was best known as “Bill Cosby” to the public, spent his last days with close loved ones in his Massachusetts home on January 25, 2016—his marriage anniversary date. He was 78 years old when he passed. Bill was born on July 12, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA. He was the eldest of three brothers; Russell Cosby, Robert Cosby and James Cosby who are the sons of mother Anna Pearl Hite and father William Henry Cosby, Sr. He leaves behind his loving wife Camille Cosby and four of five children; Erika Ranee Cosby, Ensa Cosby, Evin Harrah Cosby and Erinn Chalene Cosby. His only son, Ennis Cosby, is deceased. He also leaves three grandchildren. Not only was Bill a dad to five, but he became a dad to America during his most success- ful and long-running work, The Cosby Show, where he portrayed a sweater-wearing, pudding pop eating doctor, married to a lawyer who shared five children—four girls and one boy. The show was inspired from his real life, and the characters from the show favored his real-life fami- ly. The sitcom ran for eight years, having high ratings and great reviews. The man behind the character of Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable inevitably became “America’s Dad.” Before the success of The Cosby Show, Bill followed his father’s footsteps by serving in the U.S. Navy, where he received his diploma after dropping out of high school, and then went on to college to play football and run track, but later left to pursue comedy full-time.
