Vorwort
Sehr geehrte Mitglieder und FreundInnen der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Pneumologie!
Die heurige 42. Jahrestagung der ÖGP fin- det von 18. bis 20. Oktober in Linz statt.
4 Jahrestagung 2018 | Annual Meeting 2018 Vorwort | Welcoming Address

Jahrestagung 2018 | Annual Meeting 2018 5 Vorwort | Welcoming Address
Welcoming Address
Dear members and friends of the Austrian Society of Pneumology!
This year’s 42nd annual conference of the Austrian Society is taking place in Linz from the 18th to the 20th October, 2018. On behalf of the congress organisation committee we are pleased to cordially invite you to the conference.
This year’s motto
Lung in design – a ‚lung‘ way to go
has especially been inspired by the event location, namely the Design Center of Linz.
We could successfully obtain Professor Josef Penninger, a native Upper Austrian, as speaker for the opening ceremony lecture. As previous director of the institute for mole- cular biotechnology (IMBA) in Vienna Professor Penninger was now appointed director of the Life Sciences Institute (University of British Columbia), the largest scientific institute of Canada.
Innsbruck, Vienna, Graz and Salzburg were the congress locations of the past annual conferences.
For the first time Linz has been chosen. Hardly any other Austrian city has undergone such an impressive transformation in the last years. Imbedded in the picturesque landscape of the Danube, with a perfect mix of urbanity and conformity, the Upper Austrian capi- tal forms a vital and future oriented symbiosis of industry, culture and freedom, holding the reputation of a ‚city of respect‘ and international ‚creative city‘. The Johannes Kepler University (JKU) is the leading one of five academies in Linz with approximately 20,000 students. In 2014 the offered range of fields of study consisting of social sciences, eco- nomics, law and natural technical sciences has been extended by a new branch, namely ‘doctors made in Upper Austria’. In cooperation with the medical university of Graz the JKU offers the first medical studies in form of a bachelor/master system.
According to the congress motto the programme includes creative issues. Thus, talks on e.g. artificial lung or the intelligent bed can be heard.
6 Jahrestagung 2018 | Annual Meeting 2018 Vorwort | Welcoming Address
For the second time the congress is conducted conjointly with the Austrian Society of Thoracic Surgery, which has already proven to be a successful partnership. There are once more a lot of shared sessions with lectures ranging from pleuramesothelioma, CTEPH, ECMO and lung transplantation to the borderline operable patient.
Recognised national and international speakers will share their expertise and knowledge on central issues such as COPD and asthma, allergies, tuberculosis, thoracic malignoma, sleep medicine, rehabilitation, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension and cystic fibrosis. Additionally, a series of new themes and a specific ses- sion for practising colleagues have been established.
The format of the 'pneumology compact' lecture series has proven to be very successful, addressing especially trainees, general practitioners and students.
Following the tradition, the annual conference is designed to be an interprofessional plat- form for knowledge transfer. The hands-on courses on emergency ultrasound, thoracic radiology, non-invasive ventilation, ergospirometry as well as the multiprofessional work- shop on thoracic drainage offer physicians, qualified nurses and respiratory physiothera- pists the opportunity to acquire special skills.
Our special thanks goes to the congress secretaries Dr. Felix Hüttinger, Dr. Romana Wass, Dr. Katharina Cima, Doz. Dr. Jörg Lindenmann apart from the programme organising committee and the Mondial team.
Furthermore, we would like to express our thanks to the companies, whose sponsoring is a major contribution to a successful conference.
We are very pleased to welcome you to Linz for an inspiring exchange of interdisciplinary expertise in a familiar atmosphere.

Vorwort

Welcoming Address
Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to welcome you to the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Austrian Society of Thoracic Surgery, which takes place conjointly with the 42nd Annual Confe- rence of the Austrian Society of Pneu- mology.
As a result of the positive feedback received after our first joint conference, both societies have committed to a long-term partnership with regard to future confe- rences. This cooperation aims at promoting the numerous shared contents of thoracic surgery and pneumology with the goal to convey them in a comprehensive manner to the congress participants.
Like last year, the provided formats will range from invited talks and poster presentations to specific sessions, such as 'the case of the year' and the tumor board. Another highlight will once again be the ceremony of the Georg Salzer Award of the OGTC combined with the presentation of the best scientific works of the last year.
I would like to thank once more the Austrian Society of Pneumology for the excellent collaboration and wish all participants an interesting and enriching joint conference.
With best regards,
Walter Klepetko, MD, Priv.-Doz. Florian Augustin, MD Professor of Thoracic Surgery General Secretary of the Austrian Society President of the Austrian Society of of Thoracic Surgery Thoracic Surgery
