Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. Introduction The Curculionoidea are one of the largest and most diverse groups of beetles, including more than 62,000 species [1] comprising 11 families [2,3]. They have a complex morphological structure [2–7], ecological confinement, and diverse trophic links [1], which makes them a convenient group for characterizing modern and fossil biocenoses. -

Majka Three hundred years of European settlement have dramatically altered the forests of the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Perhaps nowhere has the impact been greater than on Prince Edward Island (PEI). Pre-colonial PEI was largely dominated by old growth forests consisting of American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. (Fagaceae)), sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh. (Sapindaceae)) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt. (Betulaceae)), with smaller components of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg. (Pinaceae)), eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. (Pinaeceae)), red oak (Quercus rubra L. (Fagaceae)), white pine (Pinus strobus L. (Pinaceae)) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. (Pinaceae)) (MacQuarrie and Lacroix 2003; Sobey and Glen 2004). By early in the eighteenth century, significant cutting of the forest had started and large areas of the island were burnt. By 1900, 70% of the island’s forests had been cleared and the remaining 30% was highly fragmented and extensively disturbed (PEI Department of Agriculture and Forestry 1997; Loo and Ives 2003). In 1960, 60% of the land on the island was devoted to agriculture and a further 8% was otherwise open (unimproved waste land, marsh, barren, etc.) leaving only 32% as forest (Erskine 1960). Since then, farm abandonment has led to some re-growth so that by 1992, 57% of the land was forested (Anonymous 1992). Even where land has not been cleared, the best trees have been removed for generations, leaving a generally impoverished forest, both in terms of genetic quality and of species diversity. -

Invasive Species Invasive Species on Municipal Radar An invasive species is a non-native species (including seeds, eggs, spores, or other propagules) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic harm, environmental harm, or harm to human health. The term "invasive"; is used for the most aggressive species. These species grow and reproduce rapidly, causing major disturbance to the areas in which they are present. Many invasive species are often introduced to an area by accident although many species have been deliberately introduced. The Norway Maple was first purposely imported to North America in the mid-1700s and is now considered a risk. Invasive Species Identification Plants: Coltsfoot - Tussilago farfara Physical Description • Blooms can occur in late February to early March, and range in size from 10-20 cm. • Yellow flowers are “dandelion like” and bloom in advance of leaf emergence. • Deep green/heart shaped leaves with velvety undersides. • Woody stems can range in colour from red to purplish. General Habitat & Additional Characteristics • Coltsfoot is reported to prefer damp areas and is often found along roadsides, agricultural areas, native forests, disturbed rural and urban areas, pastures, sand dunes, cliff slopes, and stream banks. • Historically, seeds have been dispersed within soil spread during road maintenance practise. -

Gardner, Committee Member Copyright by James Nathan Radl 2018 Abstract Twelve cultivars of commercially available elms (mostly hybrids) from the National Elm Trial and five cultivars of American elms from the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station were evaluated for both adult and larval feeding damage by the elm flea weevil, Orchestes steppensis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). O. steppensis is a recent invasive species in North America that damages elm trees by disfiguring leaves with adult pit feeding and larval mining. A summary of the history, biology, and importance of this pest is included as well as some personal observations of populations in Columbus, Ohio. Trials were repeated using several different variables including: location/type of cultivar, type of evaluation (field choice test and bioassay no-choice test), time of year (for field evaluations only), and life stage (adult feeding and larval mines/oviposition). Generally, the results show that adult O. steppensis have a significant preference for certain cultivars over others. Some of the least preferred cultivars by the adult weevils included ‘Accolade,’ ‘Clone D,’ ‘Commendation,’ ‘Danada Charm,’ ‘Patriot,’ and ‘Triumph.’ Only one American elm was used in the trials comparing different commercially available cultivars (‘Valley Forge’), and it was among the least preferred during the field evaluations but, unexpectedly, one of the most preferred during the bioassay. -
