McAlpine, H. Scott Makepeace, Dwayne L. Sabine, Paul M. Brunelle, Jim Bell, and Gail Taylor Over the past two decades there has been a surge of interest in the Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) of Maritime Canada and adjacent regions, with much new information accrued (Brunelle, 1997; Brunelle 1999; Brunelle 2010). Much of this increased interest in the region can be attributed to the efforts of a single investigator and his collaborators in the Atlantic Dragonfly Inventory Project (ADIP; see Appendix 2 in Brunelle 2010) and the Maine Damselfly and Dragonfly Survey. In spite of the extensive database of records for the Odonata of the region that now exists (35,000 records for the Maritimes, a further 30,000 for Maine), new discoveries continue to be made (Catling 2002; Sabine et al. 2004; Cook and Bridgehouse 2005; Klymko 2007; Catling et al. 2009), testament to continuing survey effort and the natural and anthropogenic changes in regional biodiversity always in process. Here we document expansion in the geographic range of two Atlantic Coastal Plain Odonata; Enallagma pictum Morse (Scarlet Bluet) (Odonata: Coenagrionidae), shown to be resident in New Brunswick and new for Canada, and Celithemis martha Williamson (Martha’s Pennant) (Odonata: Libellulidae), a species known previously from a single occurrence (Klymko 2007); and, comment on the significance of these records in the light of climate warming now in process. -

This quantity ofP. elisabethae exuviae allows an accurate description of the species. The exuviae of P. elisabethae are very similar to the exuviae of P. nymphula, the principal differences being in the shape of their labial palps. Mai 2012 wurden insgesamt 348 Exuvien und sechs Larven von P. elisabethae gesammelt. Die Menge der P. elisabethae-Exuvien erlaubt die präzise Beschreibung der Art. Die Exuvien von P. elisabethae sind denen von P. nymphula sehr ähnlich, die Hauptun- terscheidungsmerkmale finden sich in der Gestalt der Labialpalpen. -

Damselflies & Dragonflies of the Tees and Humber Industrial Sites Introduction Damselflies and dragonflies belong to the same ‘order’ of insects called the Odonata. Although the adults are flying insects, the other stages of their life cycle are spent in water. Adults lay their eggs on aquatic plants or in the mud of still or slow moving freshwater. The larval or ‘nymph’ form is the immature stage which is wingless. Nymphs eat other aquatic insects and small animals such as tadpoles and small fish. The first two days were spent in the southern Vienne before we moved to the bizarre landscape of the Pinail reserve, and finally to Mezieres where we spent three days in the Brenne - ‘land of a thousand lakes’. This year's tour started on the cool side at 17-18°C, but settled into a pattern that proved to be ideal for finding and photographing odonata. Due to the sharp eyes, flexibility and optimism of group members, the tour was a resounding success, scoring a total of 44 species (tour average 41), equalling the tour record. The emphasis here is always on getting good, diagnostic views for all participants, something we achieved for all but one species. It was a good year for 'sets' of species this year, with both pincertails, four emerald dragonflies and both whiteface species. Added to this were five fritillary butterfly species, both Emperors (Purple and Lesser Purple), and an outstanding two clearwing moths – both Hornet and Firey. -

This subspecies was found historically in the mountain ranges of Koolau and Waianae, and is currently known from 16 stream sites at high altitudes in the Koolau Range. Its limited habitat and small scattered populations may affect long-term stability. The species is susceptible to the effects of habitat loss and introduced species. Research should focus on habitat management and protection, and control of invasive species. Adults are medium-sized, from 35-45 mm (1.4-1.8 in.) in length with a wingspan of 43-50 mm (1.7-2.0 in.). Adults of both sexes can be recognized by the lime green to blue-green coloration on the lower Species Profile: Megalagrion nigrohamatum nigrolineatum 1 half of the face and eyes (Polhemus & Asquith 1996), and the top portion of the eyes is bright red. Males have a dark abdomen with an orange-red tip, and a broad yellow, red, or orange patch on the side of the thorax. May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males.
