Damselflies & Dragonflies of the Tees and Humber Industrial Sites Introduction Damselflies and dragonflies belong to the same ‘order’ of insects called the Odonata. Although the adults are flying insects, the other stages of their life cycle are spent in water. Adults lay their eggs on aquatic plants or in the mud of still or slow moving freshwater. The larval or ‘nymph’ form is the immature stage which is wingless. Nymphs eat other aquatic insects and small animals such as tadpoles and small fish. The first two days were spent in the southern Vienne before we moved to the bizarre landscape of the Pinail reserve, and finally to Mezieres where we spent three days in the Brenne - ‘land of a thousand lakes’. This year's tour started on the cool side at 17-18°C, but settled into a pattern that proved to be ideal for finding and photographing odonata. Due to the sharp eyes, flexibility and optimism of group members, the tour was a resounding success, scoring a total of 44 species (tour average 41), equalling the tour record. The emphasis here is always on getting good, diagnostic views for all participants, something we achieved for all but one species. It was a good year for 'sets' of species this year, with both pincertails, four emerald dragonflies and both whiteface species. Added to this were five fritillary butterfly species, both Emperors (Purple and Lesser Purple), and an outstanding two clearwing moths – both Hornet and Firey. -

Read Full License Page 1/24 Abstract Background Evolutionary processes can cause strong spatial genetic signatures, such as local loss of genetic diversity, or conicting histories from mitochondrial versus nuclear markers. Investigating these genetic patterns is important, as they may reveal obscured processes and players. The maternally inherited bacterium Wolbachia is among the most widespread symbionts in insects. Wolbachia typically spreads within host species by conferring direct tness benets, or by manipulating its host reproduction to favour infected over uninfected females. Under sucient selective advantage, the mitochondrial haplotype associated with the favoured symbiotic strains will spread (i.e. hitchhike), resulting in low mitochondrial genetic variation across the host species range. The common bluetail damsely (Ischnura elegans: van der Linden, 1820) has recently emerged as a model organism of the genetics and genomic signatures of range expansion during climate change. -

Mainly members of the damselflies (suborder Zygoptera) are dependent on this special type of environment. The small coenagrionid Roppaneura beckeri Santos (Odonata Coenagrionidae Protoneurinae), a damselfly endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is the only known Odonata breeding in the terrestrial umbellifers of Eryngium floribundum (Cham. et Schltdl.). This is a species-specific association with a hostplant unparalleled in the order. It also is the only species within the subfamily Protoneurinae to occupy phytotelmata habitats. Here, we report on a population of R. beckeri rediscovered after 42 years and recorded for the first time from the southern Atlantic Forest from the state of Paraná. The morphology and the distribution of this species is reviewed and based on these primary data future conservation strategies are discussed. We suggest including R. beckeri as a priority species for dragonfly conservation policies due to its exclusive biological characteristics, evolutionary rele- vance, and occurrence in urban to peri-urban landscapes. May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males.
