INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND Mumbai, with a population of over 13 million is the largest metropolis in India and one of the most populous cities in the world. It is expected to have a population of 34.0 million by 2031. To cater to the mobility needs, an efficient suburban rail system runs across of MMR. The existing suburban rail system is one of the most crowded and overloaded suburban systems in the world. Two zonal railways, the Western Railway (WR) and the Central Railway (CR), operate the Mumbai Suburban Railway system. Western Railway operates the Western Line from Churchgate to Dahanu Road (124 km) and the Central Railway operates the Central and Harbour Lines. The Corridor from Churchgate to Mumbai Central and from Borivili to Virar consists of quadruple lines, while Mumbai Central to Borivili has 5 lines except Mahim to Santacruz, where 5th line is under construction. Further, two harbour lines of Central Railway run parallel to Western Railway network from Santacruz to Andheri. The City is expanding towards Virar and beyond. Globally, tourism and related economic activities generate 11% of Global Domestic Product, employ 200 million people, and transport nearly 700 million international travellers per year. These figures are expected to double by 2020, especially in some of the world’s least developed countrie. Global Tourism Tourism has expanded dramatically over the last 50 years and has become a global industry. According to WTO’s forecasts, long-distance travel worldwide will grow faster (5.4% each year) in the next decades than travel within regions (3.8%). WTO statistics for 2002 estimated international tourist receipts of US$ 463 billion, a total of 693 million tourist arrivals across the globe and forecast over one billion arrivals by 2010. European tourism accounts for 2/3 of global tourism and is expected to double by the year 2025. The Mediterranean is the World’s number one tourist destination and is generating 1/3 of global tourist revenues. Coastal areas are transitional areas between the land and sea characterized by a very high biodiversity and they include some of the richest and most fragile ecosystems on earth, like mangroves and coral reefs. At the same time, coasts are under very high population pressure due to rapid urbanization processes. More than half of today’s world population live in coastal areas (within 60 km from the sea) and this number is on the rise. Additionally, among all different parts of the planet, coastal areas are those which are most visited by tourists and in many coastal areas tourism presents the most important economic activity.

ABSTRACT The present paper deals with the study of the diversity of marine molluscan species in Mumbai and Palghar districts. The study was carried out collecting the different species of shells on selected beaches in both monsoon and post-monsoon season. According to the observation about 50% of species belonged to the family Veneridae. The number of fossil species is estimated between 60,000 and 100,000 additional species. Shell is a hard, protective outer layer also called as exoskeleton created by an animal that lives in the sea. Shell shows great variation among themselves in the case of texture, size, shape, and colouration. A total of 8 beaches are chosen, out of which 4 are situated in Mumbai district and 4 are from Palghar district. Selected beaches of the Mumbai district include Juhu, Girgoan, Aksa and Madh island. Selected beaches of Palghar district include Kalamb, Kelva, Suruchi and Arnala. The collection of the species was carried out on each selected beach twice i.e (monsoon and post- monsoon) during low tide. After the identification of each species, all the information of respective species was compiled in a tabular form.
