Usta Texas Year in Review TEXAS usta texas 20year in09 review The President’s advantage Presented by: BY ROBERT RUBEL texastennishotels.com USTA Texas Staff PRESIDENT, USTA TEXAS 512-443-1334 Office texas Ext. E-mail texas Executive Director Congratulations Ken McAllister x201 [email protected] to all! Administrative Department t is spring time again, and tennis season Director of Administration has been in full swing for most of us for Rhonda Lindsey x204 [email protected] the last month or so. Whether you look Office Manager/Awards Coordinator T forward to the new USTA league, another U.S. Pam Jaeger x216 [email protected] Open or your local mixer, I hope you will get Controller, Executive Director Tennis & Education Foundation usta usta Larry Eichenbaum x222 [email protected] more out of our great game in 2010 – and give a little back at the same time. There are many ways to support our sport Community Development Department at the local, state and national levels, and I encourage everyone to find a Director of Community Development way you might help out. I hope to meet many more of our Texas players Mike Carter x207 [email protected] in my second and final year as section president. Although we are not the Junior Team Tennis Coordinator largest, it does not mean we are not the best. With everyone’s hard work, Eric Clay x212 [email protected] we will continue to keep Texas tennis at the top of the game! Collegiate, Adaptive and Wheelchair Tennis Coordinator Todd Carlson x208 [email protected] In March, we hosted the USTA annual meeting in Dallas and showed our MP/NJTL/Adult Programs Coordinator fellow volunteers a great time. We had many long committee meetings Marcos Valdez x218 [email protected] but still had time to have a Texas-sized barbeque and country western School, After School and Beginner Programs Katy Rogers X215 [email protected] dance. A special thanks to Whistler the Steer for being nice to everyone Tennis Service Representative-North Central Region who had their picture taken, including USTA president Lucy Garvin and Laura Gilbert [email protected] ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti sitting on the steer! They also had a Tennis Service Representative-Northwest Region mechanical bull that everyone really had a blast trying to ride. We also Amanda Shaw [email protected] were able to bring back the gold, with our stellar team of Rick Meyers, Tennis Service Representative-Southeast Region Punam Kirsten, Emily Schaefer, Chad Loup and coach Frank Kelly pulling Cindy Benzon [email protected] out an outstanding win in the first and probably last section “Snowdown.” Tennis Service Representative-Border/South Texas Region Rene Garcia [email protected] A 36-foot quickstart, foam-ball event , was moved indoors due to the bliz- zard that hit Dallas; this turned out to be the hit of the meeting. We also Tennis Service Representative-Northeast Region Robyn Readicker [email protected] pulled off a win in the Wii tennis event, won by Jon Williams and Carlos Turic. Congratulations to all for competing and supporting our team. Competitive Department Director of Competitive Tennis Since this is the yearbook addition, I would like to congratulate all the Steve Cobb x210 [email protected] ranked players for 2009 and wish everyone the best of luck in 2010. I Adult & Senior Competitive Coordinator understand the hard work that goes into playing the many tournaments Nancy Perkins x217 [email protected] during the year and the hours of practice getting ready. If you achieved a Section League Coordinator national ranking or won a gold, silver or bronze ball, a special congratula- Tosha Smith x231 [email protected] tions to you. Junior Competitive Coordinator Melissa Chambers x220 [email protected] We have a special opportunity for all players this year. This will be the last of 16 tournaments taking place around the Chad Loup x209 [email protected] country, so I expect full 256-player draws for both men and women. The NTRP/Assistant League Coordinator entries are open now and will close June 7. What a great idea – a chance Todd Reed x232 [email protected] to compete in the U.S. Open! I look forward to seeing you there, as I plan on competing myself! The winner from each qualifying tournament will Marketing Department advance to a playoff for a spot in the qualifying draw of the U.S. Open. Director of Marketing Maybe next year we can have an event just for the veteran players. Stephanie Arena x206 [email protected] Communications Manager Thanks for representing USTA Texas this past year. We continue to be Granger Huntress x202 [email protected] a strong and vibrant section because of our players, volunteers and staff. Have a great season! 18 TennisLife MAGAZINE JUNE 2010 2009 year in review Kenny Mc’s Presented by: corner BY KEN McALLISTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, USTA TEXAS ur 2010 Texas Section Yearbook. This is our ninth year to have it included as a portion of our official magazine. We wish to say a special thank you to TennisLife Magazine for a partnership that has put Ous in a class by ourselves in serving Texas tennis players. We invite you to enjoy finding last year’s adult rankings, award recipient write-ups, the USPTA Texas leaders, reference lists of state-wide volunteers and programs, our current USTA Texas leaders, 2008 league winners, 2008 Team Tennis Youth winners, Texas Tennis Hall of Fame recipients, program descriptions, our wonderful sponsors, and pictures of happy tennis players. We strongly believe in the historic relevance and documentation of our annual award winners, rankings, volunteer leaders, and stories of each year. So we invite you to put this on your coffee table or mantle and read at your leisure. Save your yearbooks to one place so that you may some day look back and enjoy the memories and remember why tennis is the greatest sport for youth, adults, friends, and family. Tennis Growth Continues Since the boom time of the 70’s and 80’s, tennis has not had such resurgence as it has now. In fact, tennis is now enjoying a second boom since those days. It started with a report from the Tennis Industry Association at the end of 2009. Tennis participation had reached a 25 year high of 30 million players which successfully reached the 30 by 2010 goal set over six years ago. Although frequent player numbers are not up, play occasions are. At that time, the latest figures were that tennis was up by 12% from 2008 to 2009 and 43% from 2000 through 2009. Then, during the USTA Annual Meeting in March, even better news about tennis growth was revealed by the Sporting Goods Manufacturer’s Association. In a comparison of all of the traditional sports, tennis is the only growth sport of all the traditional sports. Except for Racquetball at 2%, the Sporting Goods Manufacturers survey show that tennis is the only sport showing growth over the last nine years at 43% growth. Football, baseball, golf, softball, basketball, and gymnastics have all suffered a decline in participation during the same period. Johns Hopkins research shows tennis as the leading heart-healthy sport among the same list. An 88% growth in the sale of youth rackets from 2003 through 2008 bodes well for the future of tennis as well. Unlike the boom of 30 years ago, our current efforts with the CTA Expansion Plan, Quickstart, and all of our other programs give us a stronger infrastructure on which to maintain the growth. Although the economic climate could have some negative effect, our sense is that tennis is a sport easy to participate in good times and bad. The details for these reports are on our website or www. usta.com. 2012 News Page 1 of 18 The Website of Maria Bueno, Tennis Champion 2012 NEWS ROGER FEDERER VISITS SAO PAULO, 6-9 December 2012 The Gillette Federer Tour kicked off Roger’s first South American visit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last week and he was keen to involve Maria in the proceedings. The two met at the Player Party, where Roger was joined by Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Bryan Brothers. Roger invited Maria to hit with him so he could see her legendary backhand for himself and arrangements were made for them to take to the court laid at the Ibirapuera indoor arena. Maria instructed him not to hit ‘anything spinny’, to which Roger replied that he would play her like he does with his parents and afterwards admitted she was way much better than them! Later he posted a picture of them on his Facebook page, saying: “About to play tennis Maria Esther Bueno… she has won 19 Grand Slam titles (7 singles, 11 doubles and 1 mixed)… she still plays amazing!” As for Maria, she was just astonished at how well he hit the ball. “He sliced one backhand that sped off the court like it had skidded off a line,” she said. “I said: Whoa! What was that? And he just laughed! “It was a fantastic experience and I think he enjoyed it too!” The two players swapped gifts – she gave him a framed photograph, which she signed ‘You are simply the best’ while he presented her with one of his rackets, personally signed on the handle.

USTA MISSION STATEMENT: “To promote and develop the growth of tennis…” The USTA mission is clear and concise and a call to action for all of us who care about this great sport. Tennis is indeed a sport for everyone and can change the lives of those who call themselves tennis players. The health benefits of the game are now in the mainstream. One can not only have fun playing and competing on the tennis court, but it is evident that the sport can also help improve one’s overall health and emotional and mental well-being by playing tennis on a regular basis. There is one group of players where the game of tennis is truly a life changer and that group is those that play the sport of tennis in the wheelchair. Perhaps you’re a coach like me who knew that tennis was played in a wheelchair but were removed from that part of our great game.
