fo r his full lengt h o f Lady Bampfylde, and ’ we m ay be s ure that Thomas Wats o n s m ezzotint from it w as put upon the market
at a very m odes t figure . But when a rare ’ impres s io n o f Wats on s plate, in an early
s tate, appeared at the Huth s ale in 1 905 , it i s fetched s omething over s x thous and dollar . An interminable lis t o f s im ilarly high- erected
prices m ight be cited, indicating the pres ent m extrao rdinary vogue o f the ezzotint . They
point to a fas hion, it is true, but they po int X INT RODUCTION

The object o f the exhibitio n is to illus trate the progres s o f this art from its in v ention in 1 642 down to the beginning o f s r is m e o f r the la t centu y . It a att r reg et that while all the very early mezzotinters are repres ented by s ome o f their bes t wo rks , in impres s ions o f high quality, in excellent condition, exammes o f the m en w ho came imm ediately after them are not s o numerous m s s m as ight be wi hed . The later craft en, o m on the other hand, are here in s uperb f r . One o r tw o remarks m ay be added apropos o f certain indications given in the catalogue .
