    The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River Okee dokee folks… I went to Twin River in Lincoln the other night to check out the band Toto. There was a nearly full house in attendance and from the looks of the array of Toto t-shirts I saw folks wearing, a lot of big fans. I cannot be counted as a big fan. I am a casual listener, but I do enjoy a few of their songs. The lights went down right at 8pm and the backing band members took the stage and rocked a bit before the actual members of Toto — Steve Lukathar, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams — arrived on stage. They launched into the song, “Only The Children.” Surprisingly, the second song was their debut hit “Hold The Line.” That brought the audience to their feet and they sang along encouraged by lead singer, Joseph Williams. They played three more songs, “Afraid of Love,” “Lovers in the Night” and “Pamela” before I recognized the “lite rock” favorite “I’ll Be Over You.” Williams encouraged fans to light up their phones and wave them in the air. The next song, “Chinatown,” was introduced as originally being written for the Toto I album, but over the years it was re-written and rearranged for the Toto XIV album. They talked about a recently discovered video that they came across of the band performing in Montreux and it inspired them to perform their version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House.” This featured a fiery guitar solo by Steve Lukathar. They introduced the band at this point, Lenny Castro (percussion), Warren Ham (saxophone), Shannon Forres (drums) and Shem von Schroeck (bass).

    Boz Scaggs never had much to do with the military, even though he was born just two days after D-Day, on June 8, 1944. Around the time American forces got interested in the situation in Vietnam, Scaggs had left the states for Europe and his burgeoning music career. He didn’t return until the height of the flower power season, when he hooked up with a former high school classmate, Steve Miller, and recorded a few albums. Then, in 1976, he recorded “Silk Degrees” which hit number 2 on the American charts and introduced the public to “Lido Shuffle,” “Lowdown,” and “What Can I Say.” But for a short time (just this month) Boz Scaggs and America’s war efforts will be linked in at least one way—by helping the latter, you can win tickets to see the former when Scaggs appears at this year’s Festival at Sandpoint on Saturday, August 8. Here’s how it works. At any time during the month of July, head into Panhandle State Bank (any location) and make a donation to the Disabled American Veterans’ Van Fund. These monies will be used to replace their current medical transportation van when the time comes. The van, by the way, provides a wonderful service to any American veteran in the area— vets can hop on three days a week for trips to the Spokane VA hospital, the closest medical care available to them.     Boz Scaggs Out of the Blues Tour Thursday, August 15, 2019; 7:30 pm personalized mix of rock, blues, and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential 70s albums as Moments, Boz Scaggs & Band, My Time, Slow Dancer and 1976’s Silk Degrees. The latter release became a massive commercial breakthrough, reaching #2 and remaining on the album charts for 115 weeks. It spawned three Top 40 hit singles: "It's Over," "Lido Shuffle," and the Grammy-winning "Lowdown." Subsequently, "We're All Alone” from that same album, would become a #1 single for Rita Coolidge. Silk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man, and such hit singles as "Breakdown Dead Ahead," "Jo Jo" and "Look What You've Done to Me." Despite his '70s successes, Scaggs spent much of the 1980s out of the music-biz spotlight, traveling, opening a family business, fathering young children and founding the San Francisco nightclub, Slim's, He returned to the studio after an eight-year hiatus and released, Other Roads, Some Change, Dig, the Grammy-nominated Come on Home, the unplugged Fade Into Light, the in-concert retrospective Greatest Hits Live as well as a stint touring with Donald Fagen’s New York Rock & Soul Review; all while continuing to maintain a loyal audience in the U.S. and overseas, particularly in Japan. A pair of albums of jazz standards, But Beautiful and Speak Low, the latter topping the Billboard Jazz chart, demonstrated Scaggs' stylistic mastery, as did the Southern-flavored Memphis and the rhythm and bluesy A Fool to Care.

(2011) Directed by Dr. David Nelson and Dr. Kristopher Keeton. 206 pp. Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro was one of the preeminent drummers from the middle of the 1970‘s through his untimely passing on August 5, 1992. He was a founding member of the Grammy Award winning band, Toto, and the list of albums on which his drumming appears includes six hundred ninety-three entries. His willingness to help others and commitment to excellence made a lasting impact on the drumming community and the music industry as a whole. The goal of this research was to complete an analysis of Porcaro‘s drumming style. In order to accomplish this goal, a model was developed that allowed for the analysis of drum set performance based on Robert Breithaupt‘s article entitled ―Musical Considerations for Drumset Improvisation.‖ This article identified nine strategies teachers can use with young students regarding drum set improvisation. Seven of these strategies were used to form a comparative analytical model of musical elements which created a summary of drumming style implemented on Jeff Porcaro for the purposes of this paper: Dynamics, Rate of Strokes, Accents, Rests and Rhythmic Figures, Unisons, Hand-to-Foot Distribution and Special Effects. Porcaro‘s peers and colleagues identified six songs as being representative of his drumming: Boz Scaggs‘s ―Lowdown,‖ ―Lido Shuffle,‖ ―Gimme the Goods‖ and ―Jojo,‖ Steely Dan‘s ―Gaucho,‖ and Toto‘s ―Rosanna.‖ The analytical model applied to the choruses of these songs shows that Porcaro manipulated the different musical elements in a variety of way in order to build to a musical peak during the final chorus of each song.
