NEW RAILWAYS NEW TAMILNADU a Progressive Journey Since 2014-2021* Chennai Central Parliamentary Constituency NEW RAILWAYS NEW TAMILNADU A progressive journey since 2014-2021* Chennai Central Parliamentary Constituency *upto 31.03.2021 PREFACE Indian Railways is heralding a new era working for a turnaround in the system. To cater to the diverse rail needs of the burgeoning populace, an array of modern facilities and services are being inducted into the system progressively. Railways has achieved many significant milestones in the past 7 years. 3529 Route Kilometrage of Southern Railway network, accounting for about 70%, has been electrified till March 2021. Piloting with a passenger- centric vision, Southern Railway operated over 1303 Trains per day and transported over 800 million passengers annually in the pre-pandemic times. During the unprecedented nation-wide lockdown in 2020, Southern Railway, with its well formulated strategies to combat COVID-19, geared up to operate 507 Shramik Specials for the benefit of interstate workers and stranded persons. Besides, the zone has also been running special trains, workmen specials apart from special freight and Parcel services since last year. The dedicated team of railway officials are working relentlessly, focussing on developing infrastructure, enhancing capacity, operating passenger-friendly train services and ensuring safety, security and cleanliness. This booklet is aimed at listing out some of the important accomplishments in recent past and current projects in the constituency. We also seek your co-operation towards Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and to maintain cleanliness in rail premises. Construction of Divyang Toilet at Korattur, Ambattur, Pattaravakkam at a cost of ` 6 lakhs. Circulating area improvements at Chennai Egmore station completed at cost of ` 30 lakh. Commissioning of 1 No. lift of 13 person capacity at Nungambakkam Station at cost of `30 lakh Provision of 60 Nos. of Edge lit signage boards in Chennai Egmore Railway station at a cost of ` 9 Lakhs Quick watering system of coaches in Chennai Egmore Platforms was commissioned at a cost of ` 2.987 Crore High pressure jet cleaning systems for cleaning of coaches at Basin Bridge and Gopalaswamy Nagar pit lines were commissioned at a cost of `1.15 Crore. Integrated coach maintenance facilities for EOG/LHB coaches are under progress at Basin Bridge GPS Clock has been installed at Palur, Walajabad, Kanchipuram, Thirumalpur, Ottivakkam, Karunguzhi and Maduranthagam. In spite of the district’s top-notch status in terms of high educational, human development index and humungous industrial productivity, given its geography, climate and certain other socio-political attributes, the district administration and its people have to co-exist with the probabilities of hazards like floods, cyclone, Tsunami, drought, heat wave, lightning and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies. The Disastrous events in the recent past like the Tsunami of 2004, the catastrophic floods of year 2015, the cyclone of year 2016 and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, will serve as a testament to the district’s vulnerability to such hazards. How the society responds to such vagaries of nature decides the magnitude and intensity of the destruction that may entail hazardous events. It is against this back drop, the roll of the District Disaster Management Authority can be ideally understood. The change in perspective from a relief- based approach to a more holistic disaster management approach has already begun to gain currency among the policy makers due to its substantial success in efficient handling of recent disasters across the globe. The need of the hour, therefore, is a comprehensive disaster management plan which is participative and people-friendly with the component of inter- departmental co-ordination at its crux.
