A masterpiece of the compiler's art from start to finish Pebbles 5 has essential teen grunt from The Tree (a band that seemed to have a lot of problems with those goddamned wimmin, coming across like hard-done-by 60 year old bluesmen on No Good Woman), The Dirty Wurds' Why - one of the rawest and punkest garage records ever made, and The Plague's Go Away, more nihilism from the brink of oblivion. The Fe-F-Four Plus Two 'I Wanna Come Back From The World of LSD' really belongs on vol. 3 The Acid Gallery. Still - what a great name for a band (and great lyrics): "I'm outside the world and I can't find a way to get in // That cube I took must've cut me a little too thin".The 5 Canadians, Little Phil, The Gentlemen, Yesterday's Children, Thursday's Children .... all 100% premium deluxe garage classics.I could go through every track and explain why each one is a masterpiece (there's not a bad track on the album) but that would be quite boring. Suffice to say - this volume was exceptionally well compiled and the sleeve notes by Vic Figlar are very informative.I got hold of my first copy around 1983 when I sent off for some records from a small ad at the back of Melody Maker (some guy was selling all his garage punk and psychedelic albums). When the record arrived it was cracked so the guy sent me a copy of Psychedelic Unknowns vol. 2 as compensation. Pebbles albums were really expensive in the 80s and it took me ages to get around to buying another copy of vol. 5 (it was playable but who wants a cracked disc?) Uthergo One of the greatest of the Pebbles compilations, if not the very best. All really amped-up aggressive garage punk of the first order. Lots of total classics from start to finish. Hard to single any out - they're all great - but The Dirty Wurds 'Why' must rank as the nastiest and heaviest garage punker of all time. The Tree, The 5 Canadians, Yesterdays's Children, Little Phil, The Plague..... YES!! Every one an absolute diamond. Even the sound quality on this one was better than most Pebbles. Vic Figlar, noted US collector was behind this volume and it really shows - he knew what he was doing did old Vic. 17 sticks of dynamite. Highly recommended. ABSTRACT This thesis explores areas of social and intellectual continuity within the American counterculture circa 1968-1985. It demonstrate that the punk counterculture of the 1970s had its mots in the hippie counterculture of the 1960s and was not a separate Malphenomenon. The punk counterculture developed in three periods: 1968-1975, when punks and hippies shared bohemian neighbourhoods. like New York's East Village, and an ideology that rejected capitalism and rniddleclass lives; 1975-1980, when punk gained public notice and began to develop its own institutions like the night dub, the fanzine, and the independent record label; and 19804985, as punk rediscovered the political aitique made by dissenting groups of the 1960s.

  • Home Taping: Country Rock
Home Taping: Country Rock At the time of his death, Gram Parsons was in grave danger of being taken for granted. Although it was accepted that he had 'invented' the musical style known as Country Rock, this was simply being overlooked in a mass outbreak of droopy-moustached yee-hawism. Today it is called New Country and has become the fastest growing market in American popular music. The roots of Country Rock lie in the 1960s recordings of West Coast artists Buck Owens and His Buckaroos, Merle Haggard and The Strangers and the sublime pop- country songwriting of the (late) great Harlan Howard. This was known as the Bakersfield sound, where true-to-life songs and fast shuffle rhythms, often performed by musicians attired in flashy Western duds, caught the creative imagination of approximately one person: the young Gram Parsons. When Parsons founded The International Submarine Band in 1966, rock and roll was entering its progressive phase and the Nashville hit machine was at the peak of its powers - a diabolical climate in which to attempt a revolution. 28 years later we see Gram Parsons in his true light: a man alone with no precedent, no road map, just a vision that has at last begun to register with the record buying public. Today Gram Parsons’s spirit lives on in the music of Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill. And twenty-something years ago, awestruck by the imports in the windows of London's One Stop or Musicland, a small throng of fans were also travelling without a road map.

Zboray, Professor, Communication ii Copyright © by Christine Jacqueline Feldman 2009 iii “‘WE ARE THE MODS’: A TRANSNATIONAL HISTORY OF A YOUTH CULTURE” Christine Jacqueline Feldman, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 Mod youth culture began in the postwar era as way for young people to reconfigure modernity after the chaos of World War II. Through archival research, oral history interviews, and participant observation, this work traces Mod’s origins from dimly lit clubs of London’s Soho and street corners of the city’s East End in the early sixties, to contemporary, country-specific expressions today. By specifically examining Germany, Japan, and the U.S., alongside the U.K., I show how Mod played out in countries that both lost and won the War. The Mods’ process of refashioning modernity—inclusive of its gadgetry and unapologetic consumerism—contrasts with the more technologically skeptical and avowedly less materialistic Hippie culture of the later sixties. Each chapter, which unfolds chronologically, begins with a contemporary portrait of the Mod scene in a particular country, followed by an overview stretching back to its nineteenth- century conceptions of modernity and a section that describes Mod’s initial impact there during the 1960s.

NOW PLAYING The Morning Show with Joh… M83 – Raconte-moi une his… Playlist Donate Menu Here Comes Trouble: An Oral History on the 25th Anniversary of The Makers' Howl REWIND 10/04/2018 KEXP With Rewind, KEXP digs out beloved albums, giving them another look on the anniversary of its release. On its 25th anniversary, writer C.A. Coyle looks back at Howl, the debut album from Spokane garage-rockers The Makers. Not too long ago a patron of the bar I tend asked me, “What’s the best thing to come out of Spokane?” Without any hesitation — and not realizing he was setting up a joke — I remarked, “The Makers.” I ruined his joke, but he was happy about it. For the record, the punchline to his question was “Interstate 90,” which actually pulled a legitimate “hah” out of me. (That’s funny, man!) However, instead of basking in the glory that comes with a charming one-liner earning a laugh, the man was far more excited to start a conversation about his hometown’s legendary and remarkably brash rock NOW PLAYING and roll ban d that I h ad referenced. The Morning Show with Joh… The Makers’ ferociouMs i8n3ca –rn Raaticoonn otef -pmroimi iutinvee hpius…nk may have very well put Spokane on the map for garage rock enthusiasts in the early 90s. While the grunge infestation was nearing its climax west of the Cascades, the always dressed-to-kill Makers were on the eastern side of Washington state wailing away, celebrating the menacing elements of punk rock to both friends and enemies.
