Because they're so cheap in the US, the Lumia 640 is really popular. Very Important! Make sure to remove the AT&T GoPhone sim card before you turn on the phone! Unfortunately, the $30 phone is locked to AT&T. This guide is to help you unlock, de-brand and flash the phone. The phone is unlockable regardless of your location. For an explanation of why you'd want to de-brand and flash your phone, see this answer. There's a Troubleshooting section at the end. Unlocking 1. Go to this page: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/unlockrequest 2. Check the box at the bottom and then click "Continue" 3. Select the "Non-AT&T Mobility customer" option 4. Fill in the IMEI, this is found on the label on the bottom-side of the package 5. The model should show as "Microsoft Mobile/640" 6. Fill in the rest of the details and click "Submit" 7. THIS IS IMPORTANT: You will receive an email with a link to confirm your request, you must click it to ensure your request is honored. 8. In a couple of days, you should receive an unlock code. Follow the instructions in the email. De-branding and flashing De-branding is the process of removing the enhancements that AT&T put on the phone. After de-branding, you can then flash the ROM (custom version of the operating system) for your carrier. You must have Windows Device Recovery Tool installed. I've built a package that tries to get all the tools and files necessary together in one place. It's a torrent available here via torrent file. If you need help with the torrent, please send me a message. I recommend qBittorrent for Windows. The package includes the T-Mobile (US) ROM image. If you don't need it, you can de-select it to download in your torrent software. For people who don't want to use a torrent or don't want the T-Mobile ROM, I've uploaded a zip file here. Once you have the folder: 1. Navigate to the folder where it was saved (most torrent software clients will allow you to right click on the torrent and then open the destination folder) https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/4bcvgg/comprehensive_guide_to_lumia_640_unlocking/ 1/31 12/23/2019 Comprehensive guide to Lumia 640 unlocking, de-branding and flashing. : windowsphone 2. Double click on "update.bat" Search r/windowsphone Get Coins 3. It will prompt you to make sure you've connected your phone to the computer 4. When you have connected the phone (and it's powered on), press Enter 5. It will de-brand the phone and then reboot the phone 6. You will then be asked if you'd like to install the T-Mobile ROM, press Y or N 7. If you install the T-Mobile ROM, it will take a while 8. When the phone's screen turns green, it is finished. 9. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds or so to reboot the phone. 10. Your phone is de-branded and now has the T-Mobile ROM (along with Band 12 support) Installing a different ROM Different ROMs are available here, here and here. 1. Select the "variant" (carrier) you want in the center column. For T-Mobile it's "059X0P7 - RM-1073 VAR NAM US T-MOBILE SL". If you don't see one that matches your carrier and region, try one of the other two pages. The region is something like "IMEA" for "India, Middle East and Asia" or "NA" for "North America". 2. Find the newest firmware in the right hand column and click it. For T-Mobile it's "02177.00000.15203.26115 - No Date" (there's no other choice for T-Mobile) 3. In the box below the firmwares, there is a "Product Code". We'll need this later. For T-Mobile it's "059X0P7". 4. In the top panel that appears, find the file that ends with ".ffu". For T-Mobile it's "RM1073_02177.00000.15203.26115_RETAIL_prod_signed_1001_023F70_TMO-US.ffu" 5. Click to download the file 6. Put the downloaded file in the same folder with the update script 7. Open a command window in that folder. The easiest way to do this: make sure no files are selected. Hold down the "Shift" key and Right-click. In the popup menu select "Open command window here". Alternatively, you can do "Start -> Run" type in "cmd" and press enter. Then you'll have to navigate to the folder manually. 8. Type everything after the colon, replacing the <NAME_OF_FILE> with the filename you downloaded and <PRODUCT_CODE> with the product code from step 3: 9. thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile <NAME_OF_FILE> -do_full_nvi_update -productcodeupdate <PRODUCT_CODE> 10. An example using the T-Mobile ROM: 11. thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile "RM1073_02177.00000.15203.26115_RETAIL_prod_signed_1001_023F70_TMO- US.ffu" -do_full_nvi_update -productcodeupdate 059X0P7 12. Press enter. 13. Your phone should update. When it's finished, the phone will have a green screen. Hold the power button for 10 seconds to reboot. 14. Finished! Please let me know if you have troubles or were able to successfully do it! Troubleshooting If you're having problems, make sure you followed each step exactly. Common issues that are being reported: ERROR: 0x801882c1 Command failed: make sure there are only 3 files in the \debrandfiles directory. Do not change or add new files there. https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/4bcvgg/comprehensive_guide_to_lumia_640_unlocking/ 2/31 12/23/2019 Comprehensive guide to Lumia 640 unlocking, de-branding and flashing. : windowsphone Gets stuck on "[1] Update started": if the phone has rebooted, the de-branding is complete. Sometimes the Search r/windowsphone Get Coins program gets stuck. Kill the window (click the red "X") and start from the Installing a different ROM section. The T-Mobile ROM should be in the same folder as the update program. Data (3G/4G/LTE etc) doesn't work: Be sure your network settings (like APN) are correct. If you're not sure, you can Google your carrier along with "lumia 640 APN" and you should be able to find the correct settings. As an example, here is T-Mobile's guide.
