Newsletter Wonga News Dear Members, Families and Friends of Wonga Park Cricket Club 09/03/2016 Newsletter Wonga News Dear members, families and friends of Wonga Park Cricket Club Finals fever has now hit the Club big time. Last weekend three of our seven senior teams played in finals. The fourths had a really convincing win and have now progressed through to a preliminary final this weekend. The fifths won a close, low scoring game and have gone straight through to the grand final in a couple of weeks. The sixes unfortunately lost their semi final however given their success in the home and away season they get a second chance and so like the thirds, will be playing in a preliminary final this weekend. Well done to all the guys who played on the weekend. Special mention to some of our junior cricketers playing finals in the seniors last weekend, their efforts were awesome. The club is fortunate to have many wonderful young cricketers between 17 and 24 yrs playing in our seniors and with so many talented and keen juniors coming through the Club is in great shape for the future, its going to be very exciting in the upcoming seasons. The juniors played their last home and away games last Saturday and its great to see that the 14/4's and 12/6s have made it into the finals this weekend! Well done boys and coaches - that's a terrific result. For the junior players who wont be playing finals never mind, I'm sure you have tried really hard all season and really developed your cricket. So come back next season full of enthusiasm and you may get an opportunity to play finals then. For all cricketers not involved in finals I would encourage you to come along to support the guys who are - thanks A couple of Sunday's ago we had the senior vote count day for the Most Valuable Player in each team and also the best fieldsman for each team. Congratulations to the winners. To add some extra spice to the day we also had our major fundraiser for the season - a Reverse Raffle. Thanks to all those of you who bought the $50 tickets, we sold over 120 tickets and half of the proceeds goes back to the club which is a great result. Special thanks to Craig, Ben, Lochie, Garry L, Tommy M and Riley for organizing and running the day. Finally, for those who aren't involved in winter sport but are looking perhaps to try something we have included in the newsletter some information for the Wizards Soccer Club (juniors) and also the Croydon Baseball Club (juniors and seniors). Again, all the best to players and coaches involved in finals this weekend. Finals can get tense so please remember to play the game in the right spirit and do your team and Club proud. Go Wonga! Team Manager: Kim Le Breton Round 14- U/10 White v Lilydale On Friday night we played at Lilydale on the main ground and this was easily the best ground we have played on this year. We bowled first and Lilydale made 110 of there 20 overs. The team fielded and played together as a team much better this week which was pleasing. Charli, Luke and Lucas all took a catch, whilst Niramana and Charli effected great run outs. Pleasingly we had 6 wicket takers, these being Charlotte, Charli, Abi, Ethan, Chris and Lucas. We batted second and our team made 70. We had some problems with our running between wickets and had many run outs. Something to work on at training this week. Well Done to Lucas- 24, Chris-9 and Reagan- 8 who were our leading scorers. Next week is our final game, followed by the presentation night on Friday March 11 at the club. Thanks Chris Round 14- U/10 White v Lilydale On Friday night we played at Lilydale on the main ground and this was easily the best ground we have played on this year. Thanks Chris 5 Match Summaries Junior Under 10 Blue: Coach: Wayne Hartley. Team Manager: Adrian Doensen 26-2-16 This week we played Warranwood on the top oval at Wonga Park. We had the most runs hit against us for the season 1. Warranwood were probably the best team we had played so far this season 2. We had a num- ber of over throws that got to the fence 3. The boys got a few crook bounces and 4. Whoever put the cones out might have been a little close which was me but least the boys got to hit some boundaries with a number of 4’s going to the real boundary. Any way we had a bowl 1st and the best of the bowler were Brodie Hood with 2/9 Jay O’Donnell 2/15 and Cooper Smith with 2/16 even though there was a number of over throws the fielding effort was really good with some good catching and run outs. When it came our turn to bat the boys put on a show for us and took a liking to the fast outfield. Once again the calling and running between wick- ets was really good and still improving each week! And we hit our biggest score for the year as well! Best of the bat were Brodie Hood with 25 Christian Phillips with 20 and Jay O’Donnell, Cooper Colledge and Charlie Hovey all making 13. One more game left so keep up the great work boys! Cheers Adrian 4-3-16 Well we managed to get to the end of a strange season weather wise having a few washouts, a game can- celled due to heat, a few nights that needed winter woollies and the final round didn’t disappoint being quite warm and copping a heavy shower that sent a few of us running for cover! We batted 1st and were a bit dis- appointing, the majority of us were trying to pull, hook or slog sweep every ball instead of playing a straight bat when needed. There were a lot of run outs some due to some poor calling a some to Sth Croydon having 12 players. Best of the bats were Charlie Hovey with 10 and Luke Doensen, Tristian Emary and Brodie Hood all making 9 runs. When it was our turn to field the boys tried hard to redeem themselves with some really good catches with a slippery ball and some good ground fielding a throwing. The bowling was also pretty good and the best of the bowlers were Christian Phillips with 3/10 and Jake Doensen 1/6 Jay Canning 1/7 and Tristian Emary 1/8. All in all the boys have improved incredibly this is due to Wayne and his 2 apprentices Jackson and Matt coaching them and encouraging them to help them get better. It has been a pleasure to be team manager and watch these boys grow together as a team. Thanks to Wayne, Jackson and Matt we all greatly appreciate your efforts and its is people like this that make clubs! Thanks to all the parents as well everyone was all ways on time and I never had to chase anyone to do their rostered duties be it scoring or afternoon teas (which were always a good spread) due to your efforts it has made my job as easy as could be Thank you all! I look forward to seeing you all for presentations and a match against the under 10 white side this Friday March 11. Thanks Adrian Doensen 6 Match Summaries Junior Under 12/1: Coach: Jason Lovell. Assistant Coach: Rob Glide. Team Manager: Cathy McIntyre 7 Match Summaries Junior Under 12/4: Coach: Mike Sutton. Team Manager: Chris Elsworth 8 Match Summaries Junior Under 12/6: Coach: Warren Atkinson. Assistant Coach: Eugene Kear. Team Manager: Susanne Kear For the final home and away match the team travelled to Olinda. With a finals spot assured the boys atten- tion had started to turn towards finals = "Who are we playing?" "Where are we playing?" I asked the boys to finish the year strong because our final position had not been assured. We sat in 3rd at the commence- ment of this game but with 4th playing 5th we could have dropped to fourth with a loss and thus probably have taken on the top side in the Semi Final. This week Flynn was Captain and instead of setting the field and organising the bowlers as I usually had I left the entirety of it to Flynn. To paint a picture Flynn is usually a reserved and quiet lad in the field but this week did he take the job on!! His organisation and field changes were terrific.

In the absence of any Second XI cricket and the One Day Cup competition, the Bob Willis Trophy reports have been expanded to include a write up for each day’s play as well as the full scorecards. Sadly all fixtures were played behind closed doors so hopefully these extended reports will enable readers to get the feeling of actually being at the game! In addition, the Somerset Women’s team reports plus the Boys and Girls Pathway write ups are included in the first half of the book as they now come under the remit of Somerset CCC rather than the Somerset Cricket Board.

  • Sussex Newspaper's Mark Dunford Reports on the Vitality Blast Semi-Final at Edgbaston
Sussex Sharks vs. Worcestershire Rapids Vitality Blast, Final Edgbaston, Birmingham. Saturday 15th September 2018. Sussex Newspaper's Mark Dunford reports on the Vitality Blast semi-final at Edgbaston... It was all set up for a tight finish. But in the penultimate over of the Vitality Blast final, it all went wrong for Sussex. With 17 needed from the final two overs, the Rapids picked up a single off the first ball, but then Jofra Archer bowled an over-waist-high no ball, which went for four byes. The free hit was then dispatched for six. That left four to win and it was Ben Cox who smashed the winning runs off the next ball. It was a such a shame as the game was all set up for a thrilling finish with the game ebbing and flowing throughout. Worcestershire reached the final by beating Lancashire while Sussex comfortably beat Somerset to set up the first ever clash between these sides in a T20 match. Luke Wright won the toss and elected to bat, a formula which worked in the semi-final. Salt and Wright again opened the batting and it was the former who again got off to a flyer, hitting Wayne Parnell for two sixes in the second over, before being run out. It looked like an easy single, and Salt looked home, but Brett D'Oliveira's direct hit caught him off guard. Salt had passed the crease but had grounded nothing when the ball hit the stumps. Evans joined Wright and the pair looked at ease, picking up singles and the odd boundary.
