Newsletter Wonga News Dear members, families and friends of Wonga Park Club

Finals fever has now hit the Club big time. Last weekend three of our seven senior teams played in finals. The fourths had a really convincing win and have now progressed through to a preliminary final this weekend. The fifths won a close, low scoring game and have gone straight through to the grand final in a couple of weeks. The sixes unfortunately lost their semi final however given their success in the home and away season they get a second chance and so like the thirds, will be playing in a preliminary final this weekend. Well done to all the guys who played on the weekend. Special mention to some of our junior cricketers playing finals in the seniors last weekend, their efforts were awesome. The club is fortunate to have many wonderful young cricketers between 17 and 24 yrs playing in our seniors and with so many talented and keen juniors coming through the Club is in great shape for the future, its going to be very exciting in the upcoming seasons.

The juniors played their last home and away games last Saturday and its great to see that the 14/4's and 12/6s have made it into the finals this weekend! Well done boys and coaches - that's a terrific result. For the junior players who wont be playing finals never mind, I'm sure you have tried really hard all season and really developed your cricket. So come back next season full of enthusiasm and you may get an opportunity to play finals then.

For all cricketers not involved in finals I would encourage you to come along to support the guys who are - thanks

A couple of Sunday's ago we had the senior vote count day for the Most Valuable Player in each team and also the best fieldsman for each team. Congratulations to the winners. To add some extra spice to the day we also had our major fundraiser for the season - a Reverse Raffle. Thanks to all those of you who bought the $50 tickets, we sold over 120 tickets and half of the proceeds goes back to the club which is a great result. Special thanks to Craig, Ben, Lochie, Garry L, Tommy M and Riley for organizing and running the day.

Finally, for those who aren't involved in winter sport but are looking perhaps to try something we have included in the newsletter some information for the Wizards Soccer Club (juniors) and also the Croydon Baseball Club (juniors and seniors). Again, all the best to players and coaches involved in finals this weekend. Finals can get tense so please remember to play the game in the right spirit and do your team and Club proud. Go Wonga!

Round 14- U/10 White v Lilydale On Friday night we played at Lilydale on the main ground and this was easily the best ground we have played on this year. We bowled first and Lilydale made 110 of there 20 overs. The team fielded and played together as a team much better this week which was pleasing. Charli, Luke and Lucas all took a catch, whilst Niramana and Charli effected great run outs. Pleasingly we had 6 wicket takers, these being Charlotte, Charli, Abi, Ethan, Chris and Lucas.

We batted second and our team made 70. We had some problems with our running between wickets and had many run outs. Something to work on at training this week. Well Done to Lucas- 24, Chris-9 and Reagan- 8 who were our leading scorers.

Next week is our final game, followed by the presentation night on Friday March 11 at the club.

Thanks Chris

Under 10 Blue: Coach: Wayne Hartley. Team Manager: Adrian Doensen

26-2-16 This week we played Warranwood on the top oval at Wonga Park. We had the most runs hit against us for the season 1. Warranwood were probably the best team we had played so far this season 2. We had a num- ber of over throws that got to the fence 3. The boys got a few crook bounces and 4. Whoever put the cones out might have been a little close which was me but least the boys got to hit some boundaries with a number of 4’s going to the real boundary. Any way we had a bowl 1st and the best of the bowler were Brodie Hood with 2/9 Jay O’Donnell 2/15 and Cooper Smith with 2/16 even though there was a number of over throws the fielding effort was really good with some good catching and run outs. When it came our turn to bat the boys put on a show for us and took a liking to the fast outfield. Once again the calling and running between wick- ets was really good and still improving each week! And we hit our biggest score for the year as well! Best of the bat were Brodie Hood with 25 Christian Phillips with 20 and Jay O’Donnell, Cooper Colledge and Charlie Hovey all making 13. One more game left so keep up the great work boys! Cheers Adrian

4-3-16 Well we managed to get to the end of a strange season weather wise having a few washouts, a game can- celled due to heat, a few nights that needed winter woollies and the final round didn’t disappoint being quite warm and copping a heavy shower that sent a few of us running for cover! We batted 1st and were a bit dis- appointing, the majority of us were trying to pull, hook or slog sweep every ball instead of playing a straight bat when needed. There were a lot of run outs some due to some poor calling a some to Sth Croydon having 12 players. Best of the bats were Charlie Hovey with 10 and Luke Doensen, Tristian Emary and Brodie Hood all making 9 runs. When it was our turn to field the boys tried hard to redeem themselves with some really good catches with a slippery ball and some good ground fielding a throwing. The bowling was also pretty good and the best of the bowlers were Christian Phillips with 3/10 and Jake Doensen 1/6 Jay Canning 1/7 and Tristian Emary 1/8. All in all the boys have improved incredibly this is due to Wayne and his 2 apprentices Jackson and Matt coaching them and encouraging them to help them get better. It has been a pleasure to be team manager and watch these boys grow together as a team. Thanks to Wayne, Jackson and Matt we all greatly appreciate your efforts and its is people like this that make clubs! Thanks to all the parents as well everyone was all ways on time and I never had to chase anyone to do their rostered duties be it scoring or afternoon teas (which were always a good spread) due to your efforts it has made my job as easy as could be Thank you all! I look forward to seeing you all for presentations and a match against the under 10 white side this Friday March 11. Thanks Adrian Doensen

For the final home and away match the team travelled to Olinda. With a finals spot assured the boys atten- tion had started to turn towards finals = "Who are we playing?" "Where are we playing?" I asked the boys to finish the year strong because our final position had not been assured. We sat in 3rd at the commence- ment of this game but with 4th playing 5th we could have dropped to fourth with a loss and thus probably have taken on the top side in the Semi Final.

This week Flynn was Captain and instead of setting the field and organising the bowlers as I usually had I left the entirety of it to Flynn. To paint a picture Flynn is usually a reserved and quiet lad in the field but this week did he take the job on!! His organisation and field changes were terrific. A great job Flynn, I had no doubts you could do it!

The boys bowled first last week and did a great job restricting Olinda to 4/77 with Michael Semken 3 overs, 2 maidens, 1 for 2, Ryan Atkinson 3 overs, 1 maiden, 0 for 3, Jake McKenzie 2 overs, 1 maiden, 0 for 2,

The boys batted very well which included the last 5 or so overs in very bad light finishing on 2/83 with Flynn, Jake & Ryan A all retiring.

In the second week we continued the and I asked the boys to consolidate for the initial period then with wickets in hand I encouraged them to have a hit. Flynn 13, Jake 15 N.O, Henry 11. Bailey and Michael put on a great batting display with Michael making his top score for the year 20 N.O Great job Michael!!

The boys finished on 6/182 - smashing our previous high score of 154.

The boys learnt the pressure of cricket last night with the Olinda batsmen initially getting off to a good start and a lack of wickets from the boys - despite great bowling and minimal extras. The wickets eventually start- ed to come after a great run out by Ryan A. The boys bowled well - Michael finishing with 5 overs 1 for 16, Ryan A 5 overs 1 for 9, Max 5 overs 1 for 12, Flynn 3 overs 1 for 3. Olinda fell short finishing 8/174 - a great effort cementing us in 3rd. Cody saved a certain 4 from an overthrow shot at the stumps, chasing the ball to the boundary, sliding and stopping the ball before it crossed the line and throwing it back to the bowler - 3 runs to us, in a close game!!! Nice save Cody!!!

The boys have had a great year with 6 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws (one cancelled with the heat policy and Game 1 determined a draw due to the light - we were actually in a winning position when we stopped play) The boys have improved so much and it has been a pleasure to coach them this year

Bring on the Finals!!!

Warren

Under 14/1: Coach: Pete Wigney. Assistant Coach: Ash Parker. Team Manager: John Colledge

Our last game for the season was against South Croydon at home. The ground was picture perfect once again thanks to Pete for having the ground in such good condition, we won the toss and decided to bat first. Rollo & Dennis opened before Dennis unfortunately fell early for 0. Jacko came in at 3 and put on a steady partnership with Rollo before Rollo got bowled for 15. Tom Deany came in at 4 & was also bowled for 0. Zac Parker was in next and looked good until he got for 3. Phillo Came in next with the score on 4/36 after 17 overs we needed to build a solid partnership. Phillo & Jacko made it to tea and had put on a further 18 to be 4/54. They both contin- ued after tea with both playing some attacking shots and reaching the boundaries, after a 68 run partnership and in the 43rd over going for some quick runs Jacko fell for 34. Flynn came in and also going for a big hit was caught for 0. Then Phillo was gone for 36. Jarrod & Zach Duo came in with Zach hitting a good 3 be- fore leaving. Tom Larder was in and between he & Jarrod did some quick running be- tween the wickets with Tom Larder making 5 . Unfortunately Jarrod was bowled for 0 and Dylan came in for 1 ball to finish on 1 not out. We ended up with 9/109 off our 50 overs. Coming back the next week to bowl we mixed the order up and Rollo & Deany opened and bowled very tight and after 8 overs they were 0/12. Addy & Jacko bowled the next few overs with Addy bowling a double wicket maiden in his first over. Harry and Dylan bowled next with Harry bowling the best he had bowled all season. We had then 4/36 at tea and were right in the hunt for another win. After tea we struggled to get regular wickets and their 1 good batsman managed to make 56 with another guy staying for 18. Unfortunately they passed us in the 47th over and the game was done. Addy finished with 2/15 off 8, Dylan and Tommy Larder both took 1 wicket each also. We did have 3 run outs though which was pleasing as we had been working on our fielding at training, 2 by Dennis & 1 from Phillo, with Tyler keeping. Both Jarrod & Tyler also took 1 catch each and Dylan's wicket was caught & bowled. After another tough season for the boys with not many wins it was great to see none of them ever stop trying or give up when it got too hard. I can honestly say that all the boys have improved so much since the start of the year and it is a credit to themselves and both Pete & Ash for their coaching. I would like to say a huge thank you to both Pete & Ash but also to Wayne Hartley & Trevor Foster for coming down to training every week to help out with Wayne doing batting coaching and Trevor for organizing the boys in the nets and with fielding drills. I would also like to say thanks to all the parents for all of you doing the jobs whenever they were rostered for something without any hassles. It makes my job very easy and i really enjoyed the whole year. Hope to see all the boys in under 16's next year. Cheers John Colledge - Team Manager

14/4s round 10 We played Wantirna South at their ground and were delighted with a win which has ensured our place in the semi final!! The final score was 9/175 to all out for 131. Tom, Ben Cox & Bailey top scored with 29 (not out), 20 & 20 respectively. We all shared Lachie's excitement as he batted well & made his top score for the sea- son!!

Bailey continued his solid bowling season taking 3/14 off 6 overs. Ben Cox completed an excellent all round performance taking 2/13. Tom also showed his all round capabilities by removing the wicket keeper's gloves & taking a wicket with his solitary ball of the innings.

The boys are all in good form so we are looking forward to a great team effort for the finals.

Under 16/3: Coach: Jackson Ford. Assistant Coach: James Kimpton. Team Manager: Pete Guerin. The boys were at home against Chirnside Park for their last match of the season and a win would have se- cured their place in the top four and a finals birth however this was not to be.

Day 1 had the boys winning the toss and electing to bat, making a solid start to be 4 for 98 off their first 25 overs. In reply Chirnside Park were 3 for 96 off their first 25 overs. Day 2 saw Chirnside Park resume their innings and amass a total of 8 for 219 off their allotted 50 overs. Some notable bowling performances were: Jake Guerin, who although went wicketless, bowled 6 overs for figures of 0 for 17. Bailey Walton stood up and was rewarded with figures of 3 for 17 off 8 overs, 4 of them maidens. Liam Hubbard again bowled well with figures of 2 for 26 off 7 overs.

Chasing down the score was going to be a big task for the boys and at the end of the day the boys fell 12 runs short of a finals spot. There were some very handy contributors though to the score and the boys went down fighting so they should not be disappointed. Dan Schlueter batted well for 25, unlucky to be given out LBW. Hayden Hoare again batted solidly for 33 runs and Liam Hubbard compiled a handy 35 runs.

The boys were unlucky and the end of the match saw the end of junior careers for Liam Hubbard, Nathan Crowe, Josh Voogd and Dan Annells.

The boys will be back next year and ready to take that next step.

Peter GUERIN Team Manager
