In the absence of any Second XI cricket and the One Day Cup competition, the Bob Willis Trophy reports have been expanded to include a write up for each day’s play as well as the full scorecards. Sadly all fixtures were played behind closed doors so hopefully these extended reports will enable readers to get the feeling of actually being at the game! In addition, the Somerset Women’s team reports plus the Boys and Girls Pathway write ups are included in the first half of the book as they now come under the remit of Somerset CCC rather than the Somerset Cricket Board.

I think you will see from the following report that we achieved these targets and more. As the season finally unravelled and the dust started to settle back in September I wrote a note to all the captains ‘’As I spent the last weekend of the season watching our 3rd XI play out a very exciting match loss, witnessed our very youthful 4th XI taking on, and nearly beating, a Much Wenlock 3rdXI ? (2nd XI? 1stXI) and on Sunday watch our U14's win the County Final at Wellington possibly for the 5th consecutive year. I reflected on what must be the most successful season in our illustrious history. Many, many thanks for an outstanding season across the board and for all your hard work, which has helped Shrewsbury CC, get to, and stay at, the pinnacle of Shropshire, Midlands and National cricket. In due course there will be presentations and celebrations but in the mean time there is much work to be done.

Reverse sweeps make me shudder; KP’s attacks (when batting, that is) made me bewail the lack of a basic straight-bat technique and David Warner just makes me think – slogger! And so on. However, Brendon McCullum is another matter entirely. Watching New Zealand lose early wickets in their second Test against Australia and seeing the talented Kane Williamson inching to just three runs in over sixty deliveries was a painful experience until the world turned upside down. Having been beaten comprehensively by his first ball, Brendon McCullum sliced the next ball over the slips for four and then began to construct something of true wonder. With most bowlers going for barely one an over, Mitchell Marsh entered the attack and jaw-droppingly, saw his first over go for twenty one runs.
