Chairman’s Report AGM Wed 5th January 2011 INTRODUCTION A warm welcome to all our members for our 172nd AGM.arguably the clubs most successful cricket season since 1839.- not forgetting the year containing the same numbers 1983. CRICKET REVIEW If I can start by reminding you all of our cricketing aims for 2010 TO AIM FOR A TOP SIX FINISH IN THE BDPL PREMIERSHIP RETAIN OUR STATUS IN THE 2ndXI PREMIER DIVISION , SHROPSHIRE CRICKET LEAGUE DIV 3 & DIV 7 TO ENTER A TEAM IN THE SHREWSBURY EVENING LEAGUE TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE YOUNG TALENT IN THE CLUB. I think you will see from the following report that we achieved these targets and more. As the season finally unravelled and the dust started to settle back in September I wrote a note to all the captains ‘’As I spent the last weekend of the season watching our 3rd XI play out a very exciting match loss, witnessed our very youthful 4th XI taking on, and nearly beating, a Much Wenlock 3rdXI ? (2nd XI? 1stXI) and on Sunday watch our U14's win the County Final at Wellington possibly for the 5th consecutive year. I reflected on what must be the most successful season in our illustrious history. Many, many thanks for an outstanding season across the board and for all your hard work, which has helped Shrewsbury CC, get to, and stay at, the pinnacle of Shropshire, Midlands and National cricket. In due course there will be presentations and celebrations but in the mean time there is much work to be done. ‘’ And so since the middle of September we have not sat back but have been planning and meeting in order to sustain our development and long term future. Shrewsbury CC Chairman’s Report 2010 AGM 1stXI In the past two seasons we have witnessed the result of decades of work by previous players and administrators. The shear excellence of our senior players has elevated the club to the pinnacle of amateur club cricket in England. I am staggered by our success and suggest that the praise we have been afforded to date barely represents the magnitude of our success. Not only in the manner of our success but because of the resources that we have at our disposal and choose to allocate towards our 1stXI. I think history will reflect the scale of our achievements and that the 1stXI of 2009-10 will be viewed as standard bearers for a very long time to come. The play and conduct of our teams this season has given me every reason to retire and simple bask in the reflected glory- what more could we do? Plenty is the answer, as I will set out in my AIMS FOR 2011. But clearly the success of the 1stX1 is the high profile face of SCC but what lies beneath the media profile is the real heart beat of the club and the reason for success. I am, of course, talking about the 2nd, 3rd,4th , Evening League & Junior X1’s. They are the reason for our success- the way forward and the real essence of our community. So my praise is equally directed to every player that has turned out for SCC as it is for our successful and excellent 1stXI squad. If we forget that at this point in our development then we will surely, inevitably, suffer the boom and bust scenario of previously successful teams. Here you can read how the BDPL website reported on the weekend of the 11th & 12th September 2010 BDPL FINAL MATCH OF THE SEASON REPORTS Sat 11th September Shrewsbury v Kidderminster Victoria (a) An exceptional display of leg-spin bowling by Elliott Green clinched the 2010 Premier Division title for Shrewsbury on a day of extraordinary twists and turns which left Walmley and Kenilworth Wardens in the relegation zone. In a match reduced to 53 overs per side, Ed Foster and Joe Leach, both, scored 58, as Shrewsbury reached 196 for six at the close of their innings. Mark Mansell picked up three wickets for Kiddi, who looked favourites to take the title, themselves, when they reached 93 for one by the end of the 26th over. At that point, a heavy shower drove the players from the field and the home side’s innings was reduced to 47 overs. Enter Mr Green, who had, already, snapped up the wicket of Matt Pardoe (42). He proceeded to turn the game in Shrewsbury’s favour, finishing with 9 for 77, as Kiddi pressed the self-destruct button. Craig Wood hit 46 but the remaining batsmen were unable to get to grips with Green. Shrewsbury CC Chairman’s Report 2010 AGM Kiddi’s final total of 159 saw Shrewsbury win by 37 runs and, tomorrow, they will attempt to become just the second team to complete a League and Cup double when they take on Himley in the Final of the Graham Williamson Trophy. GRAHAM WILLIAMSON TROPHY FINAL Sunday 12th September Shrewsbury v Himley (h) As the curtain came down on the 2010 season, Premier Division Champions Shrewsbury added the Graham Williamson Trophy to their recent achievements with a crushing six wicket defeat of jaded Himley. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Himley were given a flying start by Tejinder Singh (20), Harshad Patel (15) and Danny Cox (20) but, after 12 overs, they had slipped to 78 for five. Greg Wright (37) and Stuart Wedge (34) put on 55 for the sixth wicket but once they were dismissed, the innings fell away to 164 all out in the 36th over. Paul Donaldson, Joe Leach, Elliott Green and Ed Foster picked up two wickets, each, and there were single successes for Rob Foster and Dan Manders. In reply, an opening stand of 65 between Ed Foster (33) and Ryan Bishop (37) laid the foundations for a blistering assault by Will Parton (17), Joe Leach (46 not out) and Rob Foster (24) which eased Shrewsbury to victory with more than 19 overs remaining. Shrewsbury have, now, won all of the League’s Senior Trophies, commencing with the (Twenty20) Challenge Cup, in 2008, and they join Walsall as the only side to complete a Premier Division Title and Williamson Trophy double in the same season. OVERSEAS PLAYER Paul Donaldson – Paul (Burner) made a massive contribution to a very young and exciting team. His contribution was in his intent, his attitude and his interest in the collective good of the team. Nevertheless he bowled 157 Overs and claimed 18 very useful wickets. And as an ever present, Paul, gave the team stability and energy. I recently had the good fortune to meet with Paul in Perth and he stated how very keen he is to return to Shrewsbury. The 2nd XI, under the excellent leadership of Steve Wilderspin, achieved what no other Shrewsbury 2ndXI has done previously and retained their status in the Reserve Premiership. Despite the consistent disruption to his team Steve persevered and was rewarded with 9th place finish and 212 points. I consider this an extremely good result that will now allow our next group of cricket boomers to shape their development in the best environment possible. I envisage a great number of teenagers making their way in this team in 2011- watch this space. SHREWSBURY Shrewsbury CC Chairman’s Report 2010 AGM SHROSHIRE CRICKET LEAGUE The 3rdXI under Steve Carless, for the very last time after four years excellent service, were often caught in the selection cross fire but nevertheless once again came out of the season with much credit., having won some 6 matches and given a great number of juniors a go at adult cricket . Steve who has been involved with the 3rdXI since he was 14 years old, I know, found the going tough this past season. But must look back with much satisfaction when he considers the players that he has helped develop during his time in office. He is presently considering a change of club. The 4thXI under the astute leadership of Ian Brierly did exceedingly well. Despite often having teams with as little as two adults the team won 4 matches and can rightly hold their heads high. A great number of juniors members played, achieved well, and we hope that the experience they gained has helped them further develop as cricketers. The 4th X1 is still in its infancy and I am sure that given time we can develop a system around which a team can evolve that can both compete and cherish young talent. Shrewsbury CC Chairman’s Report 2010 AGM EVENING LEAGUE INITIATIVE 2009 In 2010 we have entered a team to play in the Shrewsbury & District Evening League (Div 6). The reason for this move is a) to provide cricket for the U15’s not involved regularly in 3rd or 4th XI Saturday fixtures b) encourage Dads & Lads to play together c) to provide opportunities for members not available on Sundays d) to grow the opportunities for all members Presently we are planning to play matches at London Rd but other options have been discussed.
