Its simple message that through reading children “can escape the adult world and imagine alternativesˮ (108) should be sufficient incentive for everybody to immerse themselves in reading and to start imagining. Spain [email protected] ABSTRACT The music for the animation cinema is closely linked with the characters’ movement and the narrative action. This paper presents the Temporary Semiotic Units (TSU’s) proposed by Delalande, as a multimodal tool for the music analysis of the actions in cartoons, following the tradition of the Mickey Mousing. For this, a profile with the applicability of the nineteen TSU’s was applied to the fourteen Pixar movies produced between 1995-2013. The results allow us to state the convenience of the use of the TSU’s for the music comprehension in these films, especially in regard to the subject matter and the characterization of the characters and as a support to the visual narrative of this genre. The waning of old-modernist models of history, Adorno's chief among them, has made possible the reevaluation of composers once overshadowed by the modernist mainstream. In the case of Karl Amadeus Hartmann, this reconsideration has taken several forms: looking at his symphonies within the larger history of the genre, re-appraising his role as a public postwar musical figure responsible for Munich's Musica Viva concerts,1 and also examining the nature of his political engagement. Hartmann can thus fruitfully be compared to composers such as Eisler and Dessau, whose work served more overt political aims than his own.2 Several recent publications address directly the question of Hartmann's political stance and its musical realization. Vindicating Hartmann as a political composer is no easy matter: not only must one face the far from unambiguous role he played from 1933-1945,3 but one must also rehabilitate the very possibility of political music itself, against its discreditation within the modernist mainstream. Principled appeals to ethics or to Hannah Arendt's political theories must thus be grounded in close musical analysis to be more than a mere rhetorical gesture. -

The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

Reviewed by Kate McQuiston Daniel Goldmark's monograph, the first on music in cartoons, will inter est both a popular and scholarly readership. Tunes for 'Toons offers lively description, analysis, and history, and it makes a tremendous contribution to the scholarly literature by illuminating the working processes and creative tendencies of composers, as well as by unpacking the codes and systems behind cartoons that use familiar classical music and others that use jazz. Goldmark's attention to the industry of animation, his effective use of documentary materials, and his evident enthusiasm for the subject all enhance his work. Useful to anyone interested in the hows and whys of cartoon scoring (especially fans of Merrie Melodies and Tom and Jerry), the book provides rich analyses of individual cartoons, and these interpretations serve as models for understanding other undiscussed cartoons. Goldmark's case studies reveal diversity from one studio to another far surpassing that of classic Hollywood films, which suggests that "the Hollywood Cartoon" may be too narrow a label for the whole group. Goldmark focuses on the cartoons produced during the classic Hollywood era by Hollywood studios, but he also includes cartoons produced by New York studios with parent companies in Los Angeles. He organizes the book into five chapters, each focusing on a composer, musical style, or studio. Each chapter has a well-calibrated, unique scope, which Goldmark consistently supports through evidence from sources such as interviews, detail sheets (blueprints for the action, dialogue, sound effects, and music in a cartoon), and other documents. -

Unity of Mood – a piece expressed basically one basic mood e.g. rhythmic patterns, melodic patterns 2. Rhythm – rhythmic continuity provides a compelling drive, the beat is more emphasized than before. 3. Dynamics – volume tends to remain constant for a stretch of time. Terraced dynamics – a sudden shift of the dynamics level. (keyboard instruments not capable of cresc/decresc.) 4. Texture – predominantly polyphonic and less frequently homophonic. 5.
