Developer Unveils World's First Transformable Space Concept

Every square inch of the space is designed to be as efficient as Cambie Corridor possible. Think movable walls, beds that transform into couches, and more. In a Chinatown Like 2 real estate market where developers are consistently trying to cram residents Coal Harbour into 500 square foot apartments, these units offer roughly the same square Collingwood footage but appear significantly more usable because of the creative design Commercial Drive and layout. The 320-unit building is being called the Alumni, which will be the Downtown first of eight buildings that Bosa has planned for Surrey Central City district. Long standing impediments to gentrification, including industrial manufacturing, social housing, and crime, are not deterring change in this area to the extent they once did. This thesis examines how public policy has affected these changes in Grandview Woodland. Public policies embodied in laws and regulations have the capacity to either encourage or dissuade gentrification; however, other variables also influence gentrification making it difficult to determine the importance and influence of public policy in the process. This thesis uses semi-structured interviews and a document review in a case study of Grandview Woodland, to gain a better understanding of how public policies can influence gentrification in a local area where gentrification was previously impeded.

The Downtown Eastside Revitalization Program, Downtown Eastside "Extraordinary" Policing, and Business Improvement Associations (BIA's): Why the People of the DTES Are Being Harassed and Brutalized It's the year 2000, RC's second largest industry is tourism and 1/3'~of the top 100 public companies fall into the realm of high technology, communications, real estate, entertainment, finance and investment (BC Business, March 2000). While tourism requires expanded entertainment, leisure and shopping opportuniues, attracting new company headquarters necessitates an expanded Central Business District with high-class offices, condos and fancy restaurants for business luncheons. Downtown Vancouver is no longer enough. New developments over the past several years have started at the edges of the Downtown Eastside (DTES) and now the City has plans to "revitalize" it's centre. This has caused much concern for DTES residents - they are being displaced from their homes, swept from the streets and increasingly, harassed and brutalized by police and private security guards. In a July 1998 memo to the Standing Committee on Planning and Environment, the General Manager of Community Services stated: Some.people worry that new condominiums in International Village, in Gastown and in City Gate, and the planned Trade and Convention Centre on the waterfront to the north will bring further development interest to the area. Although new investment can assist with the Downtown Eastside's rev~talization,some see it as conflicting with the neighbourhood's traditional role as a place for the less advantaged. This memo was one of a series that were bandied about in 1998 when the City Manager, Chief Constable of the WD, and the General Manager of Community Services asked City Council to endorse their funding applicauon to the National Crime Prevention P~ram,Sqh Cities Initiative, Crime Preve~tzonInvestment Fund.

The Conflict Over Vancouver's Downtown Eastside
Ideological constructions of place: The conflict over Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Cory Dobson University of Calgary I – INTRODUCTION As global real-estate and finance markets have become increasingly fluid and governments at all levels have embraced neoliberal policies, pressures of large-scale gentrification and redevelopment of our inner-cities have become increasingly prevalent. With these relatively new developments, there has been a great deal of debate surrounding the most effective way to deal with the dilapidated areas in our cities. Seen as a visual and moral blemish to the marketability of the city, many neoliberal proponents have called for a ‘cleansing’ of these regions, through an opening up of inner-city housing to the forces of the market, thereby ensuring the ‘highest and best use’ for all parcels of land. As the guiding ideological outlook continues to align itself with this objective there has been increased pressure placed on the neighbourhoods of the poor. What are the causes and consequences of such ideological constructions, and how has the embrace of these anti-social motives affected the livelihood of the poorest Canadians in our cities? Few neighbourhoods in Canada have been as adversely affected by the discourses and pressures of redevelopment as Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in British Columbia. This neighbourhood, and the constant struggle endured by its occupants, is the focus of this paper. Vancouver is one of Canada’s leaders in attracting foreign investment. The Downtown Eastside faces a great deal of uncertainty as capital investment promisses further redevelopment and social change. The struggle over the Downtown Eastside is currently being staged by two primary groups: Those individuals who subscribe to the neoliberal ideology that calls for the complete liberalization of all markets, believing that the goal of achieving ‘world-class’ city status should be the primary objective of all Vancouver citizens; and those individuals who see this monetary achievement as a secondary priority at best.
