  • Massachusetts Clean Marina Guide: Strategies to Reduce
4.2 Boat Cleaning Cleaning boats and boat equipment is important for aesthetics and longevity. Some of the soaps and solvents commonly used in cleaning boats can be toxic to marine life. Consequently,it is important to educate boaters about environmentally–sound cleaning products and practices. Set an example for your boating guests by selling and using “green” products while providing boat cleaning services by the marina. LEGAL REQUIREMENTS The following laws apply to boat cleaning activities. If you perform boat cleaning ser- vices at your facility, please read the summary of these regulatory programs in Chapter 6. • Massachusetts Air Quality Regulations • Massachusetts Clean Waters Act • Massachusetts Hazardous Waste Regulations Best Management Practices Consider employing the following BMPs for environmentally-protective boat clean- ing methods. > Designated Maintenance Areas: Cleaning should be restricted to designated maintenance areas. See section 4.1 for more information. > Natural Cleaners: Promote the use of natural cleaners at your marina. The most natural cleaner you can use is water. Scrubbing a dirty section of your boat with a rag soaked with water can be as effective as any cleaning agent if you apply more Consider This “elbow grease.”Other natural cleaners that can be very effective include lime juice, borax, and baking soda. Because even natural cleaners can have a negative effect on Try cleaning with water and some extra “elbow grease” before relying the environment, use them in moderation. on cleaning products. People forget > Biodegradable Soaps: When a boater needs to use a detergent, suggest phosphate- that water is one of the best sol- vents available.

  • Carpenters of Japanese Ancestry in Hawaii Hisao Goto Kazuko
Craft History and the Merging of Tool Traditions: Carpenters of Japanese Ancestry in Hawaii Hisao Goto Kazuko Sinoto Alexander Spoehr For centuries the Japanese have made extensive use of wood as the main raw material in the construction of houses and their furnishings, temples, shrines, and fishing boats. As a wood-worker, the carpenter is one of the most ancient of Japanese specialists. He developed a complex set of skills, a formidable body of technical knowledge, and a strong tradition of craftsmanship to be seen and appreciated in the historic wood structures of contemporary Japan.1 The first objective of this study of carpenters of Japanese ancestry in Hawaii is to throw light on how the ancient Japanese craft of carpentry was transplanted from Japan to a new social, cultural, and economic environment in Hawaii through the immigration of Japanese craftsmen and the subsequent training of their successors born in Hawaii. Despite its importance for the understanding of economic growth and develop- ment, the craft history of Hawaii has not received the attention it deserves. The second objective of the study is more anthropological in nature and is an attempt to analyze how two distinct manual tool traditions, Japanese and Western, met and merged in Hawaii to form a new composite tool tradition. This aspect of the study falls in a larger field dealing with the history of technology and of tool traditions in general. Carpentry today, both in Japan and in the United States, relies heavily on power rather than hand tools. Also, carpenters tend to be specialized, and construction is to a major degree a matter of assembling prefabricated parts.

Dog door (in an) afternoon Give your pet the freedom to come and go whenever it wishes by installing this energy-effi cient kit BY THOMAS BAKER G PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTHONY TIEULI WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY, it’s easy to miss the signals that a dog needs to go outside right now. And when the message doesn’t get through, the result can be a nasty mess. That isn’t a worry with a dog door, fi tted into either a human- sized door or a wall like the one at right, because it gives your dog the freedom to come and go at will. Providing a pet with its own portal can also save on heating and cooling bills—a small door, when opened, allows less interior air to escape than a big one does—as long as it is weatherstripped and closes tightly on its own. The one at right has two saloon-style doors that close quickly and don’t need much pressure to open. When the family is away, a metal plate inside deters intruders. On the following pages, see how This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor installed a PlexiDor dog-door kit for Soleil, the Newfoundland at the Arlington Arts and Crafts TV project.
