They are the new faction of a young (thirty-five and under) and affluently divested “artrepreneur,” a term applied to differentiate them from the older generation of discreet art collectors and to highlight the effects of their dramatic buying power for purchasing art in bulk.1 It’s almost impossible for these handful numbers of men to escape anyone’s attention as fodders for online and WeChat attention. They include the founders Adrian Cheng of chi K11 art museums in Hong Kong and mainland China, Lu Xun of Sifeng Art Museum in Nanjing, Lin Han of M Woods Museum in Beijing, and Chong Zhou of the Shanghai restaurant Le Petit Cochon Vert. They have been educated abroad and command full confidence to grant interviews in Mandarin and perfect English. They also possess a no-nonsense ability to put down significant sums of money with relative ease where no older collectors had usually dared. David Chau belongs to this category of China’s new artrepreneurs. Though his work has been exhibited internationally, the New Museum show will be the artist’s first US solo exhibition and the result of his first visit to the United States. Cheng Ran is one of the most promising younger Chinese artists working today.

Lara van Meeteren and Bart Wissink* Public Art in the Private City: Control, Complicity and Criticality in Hong Kong https://doi.org/10.1515/opphil-2019-0020 Received May 08, 2019; accepted June 09, 2019 Abstract: Responding to Open Philosophy’s call ‘Does public art have to be bad art?’, in this paper we argue that this discussion should pay attention to the consequences of structural transformations that guide the production and presentation of public art in today’s increasingly private city. While entrepreneurial governance and corporate branding strategies generate new opportunities, they might also result in increased risk averseness and control over the content of public art, thus putting its critical potential at risk. That observation ushers in urgent questions about control, complicity and criticality. We aim to reflect on those questions through two public art projects in Hong Kong: Antony Gormley’s Event Horizon (2015) and Our 60-second friendship begins now (2016) by Sampson Wong Yu-hin and Jason Lam Chi-fai. After drawing conclusions on the justification of public funding for co-productions, the legitimacy for artists to sometimes not ‘follow the rules’, and the problematic nature of a narrow definition of professionalism as a means to discredit artists, our analysis underlines the urgent need to develop a framework that can guide discussions on the consequences of control and complicity for the critical potential of public art.     Unknown Artists Agency – Wang Xin Solo Show 2018.09.16 – 2018.12.15 Shenyang chi K11 art space 4F K11 Art Mall, Shenyang, China Producer: Adrian Cheng Artistic Director: May Xue Shenyang chi K11 art space is pleased to present Wang Xin’s latest solo exhibition, “Unknown Artists Agency”, from September 16 to December 15, 2018. The exhibition features 12 recent immersive interactive art installations. These works are independent as well as interlocking parts of an organic structure, forming an interesting model of the contemporary art ecosystem. Visitors are invited to explore the reciprocal relationships between individual artists, artistic practices and the public. Without borrowing from social reality and emotional experiences, Wang Xin’s practice is rooted in the ecosystem that artists actually rely on. Taking the system’s insiders — — including gallerists, artists, art agencies, artworks —— and the system’s set rules as materials, her installations, videos and new media works challenge the art world’s established framework in playful ways, while addressing philosophical propositions of the value of art and the future in a technologically advanced, environmentally dilapidated anthropocene. As a certified hypnotist, Wang Xin engages into the working of the subconscious and is familiar with creating ambiguous situations to influence people’s perceptions. These experiences are utilised by Wang Xin in her art practice. Two most significant elements throughout her work are the use of pink colour and a ubiquitous use of slogans. Artists often employ symbolic elements and icons to emphasize individualistic characteristics. Wang Xin’s frenetic use of these two elements is no less a reference and a sarcastic retort of such normalcy in the art world.
