Werner was America’s first international skiing star who began his career at the University of Colorado in 1959. In 1961, he won the NCAA slalom and placed second in the downhill. Two years later, he reversed the order by claiming the downhill title and taking second in the slalom. Werner was a threetime all-American while at CU, was elected to the Skiing Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. He was killed in an avalanche in St. Moritz, Switzerland, April 12, 1964. Werner established a standard for American skiers which still stands as an inspiration today. Because of the example Werner set for young athletes, a scholarship commemorating Buddy was established in 1973 to benefit a deserving team member. 1973 Mark Ford 1988 Fritz Schlopy 2004 Tahir Bisic 1974 John Elliott 1989 Ian Witter 2005 Erling Christiansen 1975 Helge Aamodt 1990 Ian Witter 2006 Lucie Zikova 1976 Marc Milligan 1991 Toni Standteiner Kit Richmond 1977 Helge Aamodt 1992 Eric Archer 2007 Stefan Hughes 1978 Sigurd Kjerpeseth 1993 Sean Ramsden 2008 Lucie Zikova 1979 Tom Holmen-Jensen 1994 Greg Buchheister 2009 Gabriel Rivas 1980 Gary Miller 1995 Bryan Sax 2010 Katie Hartman 1981 Bjorn Gjelsten 1996 Ryan Webb 2011 Reid Pletcher 1982 Seth Bayer 1997 Geoff Buchheister 2012 Adam Zika 1983 Niklas Scherrer 1998 Ryan Webb 2013 Rune Oedegaard Garrett Walker 1999 Josh Nolting 2014 Mad Stroem 1984 James Marceau 2000 Andy LeRoy 2015 Rune Oedegaard 1985 Matt Lyons 2001 Chad Wolk 2016 Henrik Gunnarsson Reid Pletcher as he wins the 2011 1986 John Skajem 2002 Tyler Shepherd 2017 David Ketterer NCAA men’s classic title 1987 John Skajem 2003 Jed Schuetze The Laura Sharpe Flood Award Each year the University of Colorado skier who best exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and dedication, both on the mountain and in the classroom, of Laura Flood will receive the Laura Sharpe Flood Award. One team, consisting of eight members, was selected until the mid-1960s, when both a first and second team was selected. When the NCAA merged men’s skiing with the AIAW women’s programs into one combined, coed sport in 1983, the formula became the first through fifth finishers earned first-team honors with the sixth through 10th performers earning second-team honors. Those members of winning relay teams also earned first-team recognition. Dislocated hip nothing new for Rahlves By ESPN ASPEN, Colo. — U.S. Olympic freestyle skier Daron Rahlves dislocated his right hip after a nasty wreck in his opening skicross race Sunday at the Winter X Games, an injury that could hurt his chances of going to Vancouver. But a doctor who checked him out at the scene was optimistic about Rahlves’ prognosis after the crash that resulted in the 36-year-old’s fourth hip dislocation. Daron Rahlves Rahlves, slated for his fourth Olympics, was putting pressure on the hip only hours after the accident. U.S. Ski and Snowboard officials said he was treated for a hip injury at the hospital and released late Sunday afternoon. The doctor who treated him after the wreck said the fact this is Rahlves’ fourth dislocation should make the injury more manageable. 01 074 The Ski Journal THE P EOP L E’S RACE Kissed by the Devil at the Mürren Inferno 01 • Burn the devil! In a tradition to bring good weather, non-hazardous course conditions and a lack of serious crashes, a devil statue is carried through Mürren on Friday night as a fiery sacrifice to the race gods. Mürren Inferno 075 Words Kelley McMillan Photos Bruno Petroni ut of the darkness, the devil emerges. Cast in the rosy glow of hundreds of torches, he floats through Mürren, Switzerland’s cobblestone streets, past 19th-century farmhouses and sleds propped up outside of pubs. Cowbells clang in Otime with the marching band that trails behind the horned effigy. Hundreds of children, villagers and amateur ski racers—some wearing devil masks, others carrying candles—join the procession, winding through the village in a fiery snake toward the devil’s final resting ground. He is going to burn. It is a clear, very cold night in late January on the eve of the 02 Inferno, one of the oldest and longest downhill races in the world. The next day, many of these revelers will descend nine miles from near the summit of the Schilthorn, the 9,744-foot peak that rises above Mürren, down 6,463 feet into Lauterb- runnen, a traditional Walser village-turned-BASE-jumping mecca at the bottom of the valley. The Walsers are a group of Germans who migrated into the Swiss Alps more than 700 years ago, who still speak a unique version of the language and hold to a very definitive, mountain-specific culture—a perfect finish for a historic race.

  • President's Letter
June 12, 2020 PRESIDENT’S LETTER Downtime Quarantining at home, we’re all facing a bit more downtime than usual. I started to learn the ukulele and it’s going great, assuming all you want to hear is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” I’ve also practiced Morse code for the first time since my Boy Scout days. Still having trouble with numbers and punctuation, but I’ve got the 26 letters of the alphabet nailed. Sadly, Morse code doesn’t come up too often in conversation. Putting aside music and ham radio, this is a good opportunity to hone your own professional skills and undertake long-overdue office projects. Get caught up on that pile of New Yorker magazines, some of the best writing in the country. Take out your digital SLR camera and learn the difference between aperture and shutter priority. Create space on your computer by backing up and deleting old files. Learn a few more Photoshop skills such as cropping, brightness/contrast and image size. Get acquainted with new outdoor apps like National Geographic’s iNaturalist or The Cornell Lab’s Merlin. Start a website or blog showcasing your work. Increase your proficiency in video editing. Create a target list of editors to pitch. View a professional development seminar, such as the recent webinar hosted by New York-based freelance journalist Meena Thiruvengadam linked below. The world is slowly opening up and I fully expect we’ll all come roaring back in the fall. Having a few more skills in your professional quiver will keep your career on track.
