Industry Q&A with Josh Ellman and Mark Rini

by Tad Hendrickson

osh Ellman and Mark Rini have become familiar figures be- hind the scenes of the jazz radio. Coming up under the tute- Jlage of Neil Gorov, Ellman and Rini have carried the Groov name into the 21st century by promoting stuff from Blue Note and Columbia, smaller indie labels as well as artist-owned labels to jazz and college jazz radio. JazzWeek caught up with guys, looking for an IAJE debriefing, a bit of insight into the Groov team and to also take the temperature of where they think jazz radio is going in the upcoming year.

JazzWeek: So what were some highlights from IAJE for you?

Josh Ellman: I have to say the first panel we sat down for moderated by Scott Hanley of WDUQ was an inspiring way to start this past conference. Often times you come to these events and walk away re- freshed after meeting with colleagues you haven’t seen in a while, seeing great music and being motivated by panel discussion, but this session discussing HD technology & satellite radio and other topics gave me great insight as well as hope for our format. I also Josh Ellman (left) and Mark Rini accept the Independent Radio Promoter very much enjoyed watching the Christian Jacob Trio of the Year award at the 2004 JazzWeek Summit. w/Tierney Sutton. Man … what a band!

Mark Rini: I agree with Josh. Scott answered a ton of questions, and his was probably the most informative of all the panels this year. Other memorable moments for me were hanging with old friends, meeting new ones and seeing the Bad Plus rip it up. If nothing else, IAJE recharges my batteries and gets me excited all over about working with in the industry.

Josh Ellman: Of course it wouldn’t be a great convention w/out the “Hang.” The Mack Avenue cocktail reception co-sponsored by Groov Marketing was a tremendous success. on Mack Ave, Ron Blake and Sean Jones, made the weekend. Of course hang- ing at the Dr. Jazz/Summit records suite w/you JazzWeek loons wasn’t bad ei- ther!

Just as the music changes with the times, so does the business of music. What do you guys think is going to happen in upcoming year both in jazz business world, but also in radio?

JE: The emergence of Mediaguide is the most important thing that has hap- pened to non-commercial radio in years. Now that we have a tool that gives us real, empirical evidence as to exactly what is being played at jazz radio there is no more “guess work” involved. I know a lot of folks were freaking out about this development, but let’s face it: change is difficult, especially when all of us were complacent with an out-dated system of report- ing spins to the trades. I was. But then again a lot of folks were concerned when we went from reporting light/medium/heavy to spins. And how vague was that? Change is good, and I think this will ultimately re-motivate all of us to bring this genre to the level it can be.

MR: Exactly, this tool is going to enable us to pin- Mark’s dog, Otis, rendering all Groov contracts null and void. point our efforts and to stop wasting time on markets that aren’t legitimately supporting our records. Tour support dollars are tight enough as it is.

JE: Also, with High Definition technology on the horizon, terrestrial radio now has a chance to double their programming hours. This said, those spins we saw cut in half on the JazzWeek Jazz Chart may, in a few years or less, be right back were they where!

Is it getting harder to make a buck, or are things looking up?

MR: I’d like to be an optimist and say yes, things are looking up, but the truth is we haven’t raised our rates in almost 10 years. We find ourselves working out more generous deals with labels and artists simply because there isn’t always a budget. We have a closet – I mean office – in Hollywood with a full-time staff of three and it does make for quite a bit of overhead. Luckily, this job provides many perks that quench our thirst for music, and that right there is a huge compensation.

JE: Aww, the scary question. After 9/11 … it was REALLY hard. It seemed that fewer titles were being released and competition for those titles was fierce. continued ... jazzweek.com • January 19, 2005 JazzWeek 11 Groov Marketing Q&A (continued)

But things have bounced back. Now there seems to be plenty of music, but some labels are skeptical with what’s going on with changes at radio. This will pass. As I mentioned previously, change is good, and will be from label to ra- dio to retail.

MR: Yeah, I guess that’s the looking up part. Artistically, this format seems to be as strong as it ever has been.

It’s still early in the New Year. Do you have any memories of 2004 that stick out as a triumph or as something you are proud of?

JE: I’m proud of our community. It seems every year we get closer, and the JazzWeek Summits in Rochester help by bringing about an intimate atmo- sphere to talk about the subjects that matter to us. I am also proud of our com- pany Groov Marketing. After acquiring the business from Neil Gorov over 4 years ago, I think we’ve proven ourselves to our peers, and winning Best Inde- pendent Radio Promotion Team last year, I know, was a real personal triumph Tad Hendrickson for both Mark and myself. Mark Rini and Josh Ellman from Groov Marketing enjoying a late night hang at How or why do you guys keep on keeping on? IAJE 2005.

MR: For me it’s a combination of loving what I do, as well as loving the people I do it with. Josh is truly a great business partner, not to mention a righteous friend. Thad Paulson, our College Director, has become an integral part of this company. That, coupled with getting to speak to people like Bobby Jackson, Arturo Gómez, Chuy Varela and Brad Stone about MUSIC makes me some- times wonder if I should be the one doing the paying. I am truly blessed.

JE: Great question, and obviously it’s because we have fun. The day I walk into the office and am not enjoying what I do is the day I’m done. Hell … I can do that anywhere.

MR: I think that’s a huge part of us keeping our sanity, is the having fun part. This was pretty much instilled in us by Neil Gorov. I’d go in to detail about some of the antics that have gone on in the GROOV office, but from my un- derstanding JazzWeek is a family publication. The reason we enjoy “keeping on” is great music and the relationships we hold at radio. Yes, it’s business, but I am proud to say I’m friends with many of the programmers and artists we’ve worked with throughout the years. Without that you have nothing.

JE: Also, working in a partnership can sometimes be difficult. But what makes ours so great is that we’ve got each other’s back. We’ve been doing radio pro- motion together now for well over 10 years. We still learn something new ev-
