It then also indicates the next steps if the proposed site allocation is determined to be major development. Each proposed site allocation is assessed as a matter of planning judgement taking into account the factors set out and described in national policy. Site Allocations DPD 1.3 The Mid Sussex District Plan 2014-2031, adopted in March 2018, provides a policy framework for the delivery of sustainable development across the district. It sets out the housing requirement for the district up to 2031 and will be complemented by the Site Allocations DPD. The principle of development in the High Weald AONB is set out in Policy DP4: Housing through the spatial distribution of the housing requirement. Policy DP6: Settlement Hierarchy also takes into account local development needs and any significant local constraints to development. 1.4 The Inspector’s Report (paragraph 53) of the District Plan acknowledges that some settlements in Mid Sussex District ‘lie within the AONB and may be appropriate for modest housing schemes’. The Inspector’s Report goes on to add that ‘there is no evidence that meeting the housing requirement will necessitate major development in the AONB other than that already permitted by the District Council at Pease Pottage’ (600 dwellings as allocated through Policy DP19: Strategic allocation to the east of Pease Pottage). 1.5 The purpose of the Site Allocations DPD includes the allocation of additional development sites to meet the residual necessary to meet the agreed housing and employment requirements for the plan period as reflected in the District Plan 2014-2031. These additional allocations are in accordance with the spatial strategy and strategic policies set out in the District Plan (Figure 1). Further detail on the site selection process is set out in Site Selection Paper 2: Methodology for Site Selection (December 2018), Site Selection Paper 3: Housing Sites (October 2019 and updated February 2020) and Site Selection Paper 4: Employment Sites (September 2019). 1.6 As part of the site selection process, the impact on the High Weald AONB has been taken into account. Sites within the High Weald AONB were assessed as having high, moderate or low impact based on the advice provided by the High Weald AONB Unit. Those sites assessed as having a high impact on the High Weald AONB were not considered further in the site selection process. Therefore, the High Weald AONB has already been considered in the site selection process and sites with the highest impact filtered out from further consideration (Appendix B). The purpose of the landscape designation is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area. There are 34 AONBs in England covering 15% of the land. 1.8 The High Weald AONB was designated in 1983. It has an area of 1,461 sq km and covers four counties and 11 districts. Nearly 50% of Mid Sussex District is within the High Weald AONB; there are 163.6 sq km of AONB land within Mid Sussex District which is approximately 11% of the High Weald AONB. 1.9 The High Weald AONB is a historic landscape characterised by a deeply incised, ridged and faulted landform of clays and sandstone, with numerous gill streams and woodlands. Small irregularly-shaped and productive fields typically used for livestock grazing are often bounded by hedgerows and woodland. Dispersed historic settlements of farmsteads and late Mediaeval villages are characteristics as are historic routeways. 1.10 The High Weald AONB Management Plan 2019-2024 is the strategy for looking after the High Weald AONB in order to achieve the statutory purpose of conserving and enhancing the High Weald AONB. The Management Plan can be used to guide 3 environmental land management and assess the impact of development or other changes on the High Weald AONB1. 1.11 The High Weald AONB Statement of Significance sets out what comprises the natural beauty of the High Weald (Figure 2): The High Weald AONB Statement of Significance The natural beauty of the High Weald comprises: • Five defining components of character that have made the High Weald a recognisably distinct and homogenous area for at least the last 700 years. 1. Geology, landform and water systems – a deeply incised, ridged and faulted landform of clays and sandstone with numerous gill streams. 2. Settlement – dispersed historic settlement including high densities of isolated farmsteads and late Mediaeval villages founded on trade and non-agricultural rural industries. 3. Routeways – a dense network of historic routeways (now roads, tracks and paths). 4. Woodland – abundance of ancient woodland, highly interconnected and in smallholdings. 5. Field and Heath – small, irregular and productive fields, bounded by hedgerows and woods, and typically used for livestock grazing; with distinctive zones of lowland heath, and inned river valleys. • Land-based economy and related rural life bound up with, and underpinning, the observable character of the landscape with roots extending deep into history. An increasingly broad-based economy but with a significant land-based sector and related community life focused on mixed farming (particularly family farms and smallholdings), woodland management and rural crafts. • Other qualities and features that are connected to the interaction between the landscape and people and which enrich character components. Such qualities and features enhance health and wellbeing, and foster enjoyment and appreciation of the beauty of nature.     Chapter- 2 Formative Influences South Downs: Landscape Character Assessment October 2020 Chapter 2 Formative Influences Physical Influences Geology and Topography 2.1 The South Downs is dominated by a spine of Chalk that stretches from Winchester in the west to the cliffs of Beachy Head in the east. To the north of the Chalk the older sandy rocks of the Lower Greensand and soft shales of the Wealden Clays are exposed. The Chalk is separated from the Lower Greensand by a belt of low-lying ground marked by the Gault and a ‘terrace’ of Upper Greensand that lies at the foot of the Chalk scarp. To the south of the chalk the younger Tertiary rocks overlie the Chalk. The solid geology within in South Downs National Park can be viewed on the South Downs National Park LCA online map. The different rock formations are considered in chronological order below. The description includes the development of each rock formation, its composition, and its influence on the topography and character of the South Downs. A topographical map is also available on the LCA online map. Cretaceous rocks Wealden Series 2.2 The oldest rocks in the South Downs are those of the low lying clays of the Wealden Series that are exposed along the northern boundary of the study area. During the early part of the Cretaceous period, some 140 million years ago, a lake covered the area and it was during this time that the Wealden Clay was laid down. It consists of shales and mudstones with outcrops of siltstones, sandstones, shelly limestones and clay ironstones.

Please treat this correspondence as the formal representation by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) on the Plan. As you will be aware, SDNPA is the Local Planning Authority for approximately a third of Kirdford Parish. This coincides with the southernmost part of the Parish and includes the small settlements of Strood Green and Hawkhurst Court. The Mens Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is a significant designation applying to a large proportion of the Parish within the National Park. I have grouped our outstanding issues in this representation, identifying policy numbers where appropriate. As a summary, it is considered that Kirdford Parish Council has produced a neighbourhood plan capable of meeting the Basic Conditions. The comments relate to the structure of the document, errors of fact, the proportionality of a small number of general policies and suggestions of additional criteria or amendments to criteria to strengthen the robustness of policy. SDNPA has not reviewed the site allocations as these do not impact on the National Park. Consideration has, however, been given to whether the Plan satisfactorily addresses housing need in the Parish, since any significant level of unmet need could place pressure for development on the National Park. As a matter of record, it is pleasing the Parish Council Steering Group has sought to engage with the Authority and Officers in the production of this important document.

    Rudgwick Walks 6 Round Rudgwick Ramble The King’s Head to Swaynes and Lynwick Access Parking at the Kings Head car park. Alternatively, park at the shops in Rudgwick and start the walk from there. Walk down Station Road to the Medical Centre, then go down the steps to join the Downs Link, turning right (see 2 below). Pub info @ 01403 822200. Length and suitability 4 miles (6 ½ km), about 1 hour 50 mins. This walk is a circular walk around the village, yet for much of its length is not close to houses. Much of the walk is on pavements in the village, other surfaced roads, and green lanes, sometimes across fields on paths. Reaching the busy A281 on Bowcroft Lane, the walker does not go on the road at all. Children should be kept close, and dogs should be kept on a lead. You are never far from the village so this walk is particularly suited to all seasons, and has opportunities to make it shorter at several access points. 1. From the The Kings Head car park (pictured left), turn left towards Cox Green , crossing the road before the junction with Lynwick St to stay on a pavement, i.e. in front of Dukes Farm . Continue ahead through Cox Green for one third mile until you see a footpath sign just before a bend. For information on the church, The Kings Head and the houses down the hill from the pub, see also Walk 5, pages 33, 35 and 40. First, take in the historic ridge-top scene, which is 85m (280 ft) above sea level.

    HAMPSHIRE RAMBLER July 2015 * General Council 2015 * SDNP 5th Anniversary * Coastal Access * The Big Path Watch * European Ramblers Assn * Path Changes * New Area Chairman ~ From Our New Chairman, David Nichols ~ Hello I am David Nichols and I was elected to be the Ramblers’ Chairman for Hampshire at the AGM held in February this year. Some might already know me from my being the Hampshire Area Mem- bership Secretary for the past 7-8 years. I am also Chairman and Member- ship Secretary for the Portsmouth group which I joined in 1990 and have walked with ever since. The group’s walking and social activities are very important and I would mention here that you can become as involved as you wish with both and certainly the social side is as important as the active walking. Members of group 96 which involves members who merely wish to walk, are looked after by Ruth Croker and myself for sending them a copy of this magazine. Contact details are on the rear cover. I would however suggest that those members might be missing out on the many social activities that the local group might provide and would encourage participa- tion. My thanks to Owen Plunkett for the past eight years in the chair and he remains as Public- ity Officer and our interested party in the South Downs National Park. I would draw your attention to an article later in this edition of the celebration on Easter Saturday of the Fifth Anniversary of its creation.
