    Today’s News Clips June 21, 2017 Chicago Tribune What Marian Hossa's announcement means for Blackhawks' salary cap Chris Hine June 21, 2017 Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa is facing a serious health issue and will not play in the 2017-18 season because of what he called a "progressive skin disorder" and the severe side effects associated with the disease's medication. Hossa's announcement means the Blackhawks will be missing one of their top players from last season (26 goals, 19 assists), a Hall-of-Fame caliber player who had a rebound season at 38. It will also have major implications on the complicated salary-cap situation for the Hawks — and it may end up providing them with some cap relief, although they'd rather have a healthy Hossa playing for them. Hossa signed a 12-year, $63.3 million deal with the Hawks before the 2009-10 season. Most of the money in the contract was frontloaded and Hossa stands to make just $1 million in each of the final four seasons even though he carries a cap hit of $5.275 million. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, which was signed before the 2013 season, the league would punish such long-term contracts if the player were to retire before the contract expires. Teams can face harsh salary-cap recapture penalties if a player retires before the end of a long-term deal. This is why Hossa saying he will just miss next season — and not formally retiring — is so important to the cap situation. The Hawks are likely to place Hossa on long-term injured reserve and could get relief on the $75 million cap from his absence.

    Memories of Sport By Kent Morgan (courtesy of Canstar Community News) Western Canada wasn't kind to Scotty Bowman When Scotty Bowman was beginning his Hall of Fame coaching career, Western Canada was not welcoming. In 1957 Bowman came west with the Ottawa Canadiens as general manager and coach Sam Pollock's assistant. The powerful Montreal Canadiens sponsored team was highly favoured to beat the upstart Flin Flon Bombers in the Canadian junior final, but Bombers prevailed in a series that went seven games. The next season when the Memorial Cup final was played in the east, the pair were in charge of the renamed Ottawa-Hull Canadiens. After knocking off Toronto Marlboros in the eastern final, Ottawa-Hull met another Montreal farm squad, the Regina Pats, and won the Canadian junior championship in six games. In 1959, the 25-year-old Bowman was in charge of a different Habs farm squad, the Peterborough TPT Petes. The Ontario champions - with future NHLers Wayne Connelly, Jimmy Roberts, Barclay Plager and Denis DeJordy - in the lineup beat Pollock's Ottawa- Hull squad in the Eastern final. Bowman had to bring his team west to Winnipeg where a somewhat-surprising opponent was waiting for them. The Winnipeg Braves had won the MJHL championship over another Montreal- sponsored squad, the St. Boniface Canadiens, and reached the Western final by beating the Fort William Canadiens. Flin Flon led by River Heights product Cliff Pennington, the SJHL scoring champion and most valuable player, was heavily favoured in the final. The Bombers won the first two games in Flin Flon, 5-1 and 7-4.

    Rogatien Vachon Celui qui devint « King » Vézina, Hainsworth, Durnan, Plante, Worsley, Dryden, Roy… Le Canadien de Montréal a toujours été l’équipe des Flying Frenchmen, mais on a souvent tendance à oublier sa longue lignée de grands gardiens. Aucune équipe ne peut égaler la succession d’excellents cerbères qui fut l’épine dorsale de la grande tradition de succès du Tricolore. Tous les gardiens mentionnés ci-dessus ont réussi à remporter la Coupe Stanley et le trophée Vézina, et à devenir membres du Temple de la renommée du hockey. Ces hommes sont passés à la postérité comme les gardiens du fier héritage du bleu, blanc et rouge. Il y a toutefois un nom absent de cette liste, un homme qui était l’héritier légitime de ce trône, mais qui n’a pas su s’accrocher au flambeau à Montréal et qui a dû se contenter de devenir un pionnier du sport de hockey sur glace en Californie. Dès ses débuts, Rogatien Vachon a dû se battre pour obtenir le respect dû à son talent et ses habiletés. Durant toute sa carrière, il n’a pu faire en sorte que son nom soit mentionné parmi les meilleurs gardiens de son époque. Depuis sa retraite, il a certains de ses contemporains être élus au Temple de la renommée du hockey, alors qu’il devait se satisfaire d’être reconnu comme le meilleur joueur non élu au Temple. Rogatien Vachon fut l’un des meilleurs gardiens de la période de la LNH qui suivit immédiatement l’expansion de 1967, et le plus négligé des observateurs.
