  • Ohi RACEWALKER
OHi RACEWALKER VOLUME XXV, NUMBER 7 COLUMBUS, OHIO SEPTEMBER 1989 Baker Comes of Age on Top of the World by Gerard Wright Wrom the Melbourne, Australia Herald, July 25, 1989 courtesy of John Allen) Simon Baker's progress to preeminence in his chosen field has been very much like his race speed of 13 km/hr: steady and occasionally painful, but with a specific goal very firmly in mind. Baker has been a race walker for 21 of his 31 years, accumulating victories, experience, and his own unique philosophy to life and sport along the way; an interstate Little Athletics title at the age of 12, a junior Australian title over 3000 meters at 18, Australian senior titles in his early 20s, 11th in the 20 Km at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, the 1986 Commonwealth Carnes 20 Km walk title at 28, sixth in the 50 km walk at last year's Olympics in Seoul. Simon Baker reached his summit on Sunday, May 28 in a small town near Barcelona, Spain, winning the World Walking Cup 50 Km race, a glorious and very logical highlight in a career that has been a tribute to patience and persistence. Race wa lkers, though they would warmly dispute it, are the mavericks of the athletic world. The field athletes-shotputters and discus, javelin and hammer throwers--tend to be a law unto themselves, and are of such a size that no one would think of poking at them. But the walkers train in public with a gait that always inspires comment.

  • Walker of the Week
HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2014/2015 Number 24 17 March 2015 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours : Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 WALKER OF THE WEEK It's a tough task this time around to choose my Walker of the Week. Some of the main contenders include • The winners of the 12 walk events in the Australian Junior T&F Championships • Tyler Jones, Kyle Swan and Clara Smith who all bettered the World Youth qualifying standard at the above champs • Chris Erickson who did a PB of 1:22:08 in taking 10th place in the IAAF Challenge event in Nomi, Japan • Ashleigh Resch who won the Girls 1 Mile walk at the USA National Indoor T&F Champs with a new US National Girls record of 7:00.33. Having analysed all the results, I am pleased to announce that Kyle Swan is my overall choice. I am sure that you will agree he is a worthy choice once you review my explanation. He came into the summer season with a PB of 46:50 and needed to improve to 44:15 or better to have any chance of World Youth Championships selection, but his form was well off that sort of time. He had carried an injury through the second half of 2014 and was struggling to get back into shape as the summer progressed.

That is one of the fastest ever times done in Australia and I was there and can confirm that Rhydian looked fantastic. This week there was not much Australian racing on offer but one walker did stand out for a couple of fine performaances - and he is one of those walkers who keeps popping up regularly. I mean of course 14 year old NSW walker Tyler Jones who popped up a week ago in the Central Coast Little Athletics Zone qualifiers with a 1500m time of 6:09.64 (a 7 sec PB) and then backed up on Saturday in Sydney interclub with a 5000m time of 23:09.33, only a couple of seconds outside his best. This makes a pretty impressive double for a 14 year old walker! TIM'S TOP TEN MEN FOR 2012 Yes, it's that time of the year again so here I go with my top walkers of the year.

All finished their events in the very tough conditions, battling through temperatures in the thirties and high humidity. Jemima (6 th) and Rhydian (8th) led the way with top- 8 finishes, Declan and Rhydian recorded PBs and Bec, the youngest competitor in the women’s 20km, walked excellently, just like all the others. We are so proud of them all. ◦ Declan Tingay Men’s 20km Race Walk 22 17th 1:24:00 PB ◦ Kyle Swan Men’s 20km Race Walk 22 36th 1:27:55 ◦ Rhydian Cowley Men’s 20km Race Walk 30 8th 3:52.01 PB ◦ Jemima Montag Women’s 20km Race Walk 23 6th 1:30:39 ◦ Katie Hayward Women’s 20km Race Walk 21 37th 1:38:11 ◦ Rebecca Henderson Women’s 20km Race Walk 20 38th 1:38:21 Jemima, Kyle, Rhydian, Declan, Bec and Katie celebrate their successful Olympics, as the Games drew to a close last weekend (photo Amanda Montag) 1 WHAT’S COMING UP • With NSW, QLD and Victoria still in lockdown and with SA just coming out of lockdown, it is a time of great uncertainty here in Australia.
