Some of the main contenders include • The winners of the 12 walk events in the Australian Junior T&F Championships • Tyler Jones, Kyle Swan and Clara Smith who all bettered the World Youth qualifying standard at the above champs • Chris Erickson who did a PB of 1:22:08 in taking 10th place in the IAAF Challenge event in Nomi, Japan • Ashleigh Resch who won the Girls 1 Mile walk at the USA National Indoor T&F Champs with a new US National Girls record of 7:00.33. Having analysed all the results, I am pleased to announce that Kyle Swan is my overall choice. I am sure that you will agree he is a worthy choice once you review my explanation. He came into the summer season with a PB of 46:50 and needed to improve to 44:15 or better to have any chance of World Youth Championships selection, but his form was well off that sort of time. He had carried an injury through the second half of 2014 and was struggling to get back into shape as the summer progressed.

Competing in Round 1 of the Athletics Victoria Shield competition in Melbourne last Saturday, he nailed the 2000m walk with a superb 7:39.1. That's not too far off his PB of 7:29 and confirms his early season form. With the 2016 Olympics beckoning, I am sure he will be pulling out all stops this summer so stay tuned! Rhydian in action during the winter season at Middle Park WHAT'S COMING UP Victorian walkers have a week off formal competition this coming weekend, with the Melbourne Marathon taking centre stage on Sunday morning. Athletics Victoria Shield competition continues with Round 2 on Saturday 24th October. And our own VRWC summer season kicks off with roadwalks at Middle Park on Sunday 25th October. You can check out our summer season fixture at http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcs16.shtml. AV SHIELD Athletics Victoria Shield started last Saturday afternoon with T&F competition at 4 Melbourne metropolitan venues and 3 country venues.

All we can do at this stage is hope for the best. The NO campaign has been well run and has gained support from almost the entire world wide racewalking community. Let's not lose sight of what we want. • Keep the current 20km / 50km as the international racewalking distances until after the 2024 Olympics. • Use this extended timeframe to properly test the new shoe insert technology. • Work to enhance the current 20km / 50km events to make them more attractive to the general viewing public. • Visit this issue (if it still exists) again in 2024 once the shoe insert technology has been deemed to work (or not!) A few final bits and pieces from the last few days of the ongoing campaign. First, we have been getting some publicity from a few major news outlets. Here are a few snippets • Athletics Weekly article (https://www.athleticsweekly.com/news/race-walkers-unite-to-save-their-sport-1039921331/) • Article from Greek sports site sportsfeed.gr (http://sportsfeed.gr/2019/03/07/oi-vadistes-ksesikonontai-kai-pali-kata-ton-

Record Tom Bosworth th Race Walking 6 at Rio Olympics in a new August 2016 British Record Race Walking Record – August 2016 Over the next two kilometres, Bosworth sped up and was within eight minutes for the next 2km split around the Pontal course. But Matsunaga was race walking even faster and had closed the gap to two seconds, while China’s Zelin Cai decided to protectively cover the two men in front of him and had pushed hard to remove himself from the pack. World Race Walking Team Championships silver medallist Cai continued to motor and overtook Matsunaga and then Bosworth but The XXXI Olympic Games, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil the pack also started to increase their pace, consuming Bosworth and Men’s 20km (Fri. 12th Aug.): Despite the presence of Olympic Matsunaga just before the 14km checkpoint and Cai shortly after, champion Chen Ding and world champion Miguel Angel Lopez, the making it a 12-man mass together entering the final quarter of the pre-race favourite on current form was China’s Wang Zhen and the race. winner at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in The pack – which also contained local hope and Brazilian record- Rome back in May didn’t disappoint. holder Caio Bonfim, who was getting rousing cheers every step of the way – was reduced to nine over the next lap with Cai, whose cadence can best be described as a resembling a boxer doing his road workout, pushing the pace at the front. This remained the state of affairs until Wang, a much more fluent and elegant race walker than his teammate, made his decisive bid for glory with three kilometres to go.

  • 3:43:44 Stunden: Jonathan Hilbert Stößt in Die Weltspitze Vor

We are so proud of them all. ◦ Declan Tingay Men’s 20km Race Walk 22 17th 1:24:00 PB ◦ Kyle Swan Men’s 20km Race Walk 22 36th 1:27:55 ◦ Rhydian Cowley Men’s 20km Race Walk 30 8th 3:52.01 PB ◦ Jemima Montag Women’s 20km Race Walk 23 6th 1:30:39 ◦ Katie Hayward Women’s 20km Race Walk 21 37th 1:38:11 ◦ Rebecca Henderson Women’s 20km Race Walk 20 38th 1:38:21 Jemima, Kyle, Rhydian, Declan, Bec and Katie celebrate their successful Olympics, as the Games drew to a close last weekend (photo Amanda Montag) 1 WHAT’S COMING UP • With NSW, QLD and Victoria still in lockdown and with SA just coming out of lockdown, it is a time of great uncertainty here in Australia.

Age Graded Percentages are the accepted method of grading masters walks across the age groups. Any walk of over 80% is generally regarded as excellent and anything over 90% is outstanding. On Saturday at Middle Park in the Victorian Masters 10km road walk championship, Heather (W65, 57:50, 95.68%) and Andrew (M65, 53:05, 95.75%) raced superbly, showing that they will be hard to beat in next month's World Masters Championships in Lyon, France.
