    JOINT PROCEEDING THIRD INDO-PAK LOCUST OFFICERS BORDER MEETING 2019 YEAR 2019 / NO. 3 Date : 21.08.2019 LOCUST SITUATION PAKISTAN (16 July to 19 August, 2019) : Desert locust survey and control operations were carried out in Cholistan, Nara and Tharparkar deserts of Punjab and Sindh provinces during the reporting period. Total 449 localities were surveyed and out which locust was present at 264 localities. During the survey, the immature/mature solitarious and gregarious locust groups and gregarious hoppers of all instars were reported in south of Bahawalpur(2830N7135E) and Rahimyar Khan(2810N-7050E) in Cholistan Desert, Salehpat(274008N-690023E) and Thari Mirwah(265324N-685009E) in Nara Desert as well as Chachro (253430N-702038E) and Nangarparkar (243256N-702157E) in Tharparkar Desert. All the reported locust infestation was successfully controlled by using ground and aerial control means. An area of 9,560 hectares was treated during the reporting period. Total 30,470 hectares have been treated in Pakistan so far (March 345 ha., April 540 ha., May 4,135 ha., June 10,505 ha., July 8,030 ha. and up to 19th August 6,915 ha.) LOCUST SITUATION INDIA (16 July to 15 August, 2019) : Desert locust distant, cross country and special border surveys in the Scheduled Desert Areas (SDA) of India were conducted by Locust Circle Offices and additional survey teams in their respective jurisdiction and covered 1429 localities. Control operations were undertaken at 1067 localities against low to medium density small swarm / mature adult (transient/gregarious) groups and 1st to 5th instar hopper, fledgling groups in Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Jalore, Churu, Jodhpur, Suratgarh districts and area treated 52020 ha.

    PAKISTAN RED CRESCENT SOCIETY SINDH PROVINCIAL BRANCH MONSOON 2011 Update th 8 September,04 -09 -2011 2011 Situation : Heavy rain falls in Sindh have been occurring since 9 th August, 2011. In response to the effects of flooding caused by these rains the PRCS has been providing relief assistance to the affectees since 14 th August, 2011. The recent spell of heavy rainfall that occurred during 29 th August and 3 rd September 2011 has resulted into flooding in some low-lying districts in Sindh Province. District Badin, Mirpurkhas, Dadu, Khairpur and Nawabshah are amongst the severely hit districts resulting in death of over 80 people and millions have been displaced. Various breaches in canals and drains connected with Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) have left number of villages inundated. A large number of people, including women & children have been affected and huge losses to the crops, livestock, infrastructure, houses have been reported. It is estimated that at least 52 people were killed and dozens of others injured in three days of incessant rains in Sindh and parts of Balochistan and Punjab. The rains have also brought huge damage to properties, besides causing extensive destruction of standing crops. Interior Sindh is the most affe cted region where several villages were inundated and cut off from other areas. The relentless spell wiped out a big number of villages after breaches in canals and saline drains left them at the mercy of the rampaging waters.     POPULATION AND HOUSING • I - CENSUS OFJ PAKISTAN •• • r:..f 1998 • C!Census 1Bulletin-4 FORE We> RD The Fifth P(}pulation and Housing Census was undertaken from 2nd to 18th March, 1998 throughout the country. For this purpose, the whole country was delimited into manageable census areas i.e., blocks, circles, charges and districts. Maps of all these census areas were prepared arid supplied to the field staff to ensure full coverage. The field staff engaged from the Provincial Government Departments were imparted thorough training before the census operation. To monitor field operation, control rooms at census district/taluka levels were estab­ lished. Close supervision of census work through verification process by the supervisors was also laid down . A massive public awareness programme was launched to build confidence and to educate the people about the census procedures and its importance through electronic and print media. The provisional results of the 1998 Census have already been released in the form of Bulletin-I by the Federal Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs & Statistics in a press conference held on 8th July, 1998. This bulletin presents provisional figu res at provincial level with further breakdown to division. district and Taluka level . The population of each Municipal Corporation, Munjcipal Committee, Town Committee and Cantonmenl has also been given under the respective Taluka. According to these results the population of Sindh Province is 29. 991 million as against 19.029 million in 1981 showing an overall percentage in crease of 57.6. It constitutes 23.0 petcent of the total population of Pakistan, which has slightly increased from 22.6 percent in 1981.
