DAWSON Tm• paucity of data on the body temperaturesof small gallinaceous birds prompts us to report miscellaneousobservations which we have made over the past severalyears on the body temperaturesof the Cali- fornia Quail, Lophortyxcalifornicus, a commonresident in grasslandand chaparral from southernOregon to southern Baja Cal/fornia, and the Gambel's Quail, L. œambelii,a residentin the desert regionsof south- western United States and northwestern Mexico. The habitats of both speciesare characterizedby high summer temperaturesand moderate winter conditions. We have therefore paid particular attention to capacity for temperature regulation in hot environments. We found that when ambient (environmental)temperature rose, the birds' body temperaturecould rise by as much as 4ø C. (7.2ø F.), without ill effects. Ability to maintain above normal body temperatures higher than ambient temperaturesfacilitates transfer of excessbody heat to the environment. It is probablya major avian adaptationto hot conditions. The data presentedwere acquiredincidental to work on other species and for that reasonare not comprehensive,but they serveto characterize aspectsof temperatureregulation in quail. MATERIALS AND METHODS The observationswere made on 8 adult and 2 juvenile California Quailcaptured on the LosAngeles campus of the Universityof California, and on 5 adult and 2 juvenile Gambers Quail capturedin the Colorado Desert, three miles south of Calipatria, Imperial County, California. The captive animals of both specieswere housedin cagesof half-inch wire mesh wh/ch measured 12 x 12 x 24 inches and had sand-covered floors. -

Conservation genetics and management of the Chukar Partridge Alectoris chukar in Cyprus and the Middle East PANICOS PANAYIDES, MONICA GUERRINI & FILIPPO BARBANERA The Chukar Partridge Alectoris chukar (Phasianidae) is a popular game bird whose range extends from the Balkans to eastern Asia. The Chukar is threatened by human-mediated hybridization either with congeneric species (Red-Legged A. rufa and Rock A. graeca Partridges) from Europe or exotic conspecifics (from eastern Asia), mainly through introductions. We investigated Chukar populations of the Middle East (Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Armenia, Georgia, Iran and Turkmenistan: n = 89 specimens) in order to obtain useful genetic information for the management of this species. We sequenced the entire mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Control Region using Mediterranean (Greece: n = 27) and eastern Asian (China: n = 18) populations as intraspecific outgroups. The Cypriot Chukars (wild and farmed birds) showed high diversity and only native genotypes; signatures of both demographic and spatial expansion were found. Our dataset suggests that Cyprus holds the most ancient A. chukar haplotype of the Middle East. We found A. rufa mtDNA lineage in Lebanese Chukars as well as A. chukar haplotypes of Chinese origin in Greek and Turkish Chukars. Given the very real risk of genetic pollution, we conclude that present management of game species such as the Chukar cannot avoid anymore the use of molecular tools. We recommend that Chukars must not be translocated from elsewhere to Cyprus. INTRODUCTION The distribution range of the most widespread species of Alectoris partridge, the Chukar (A. chukar, Phasianidae, Plate 1), is claimed to extend from the Balkans to eastern Asia. -

DOI: 10.2478/orhu-2020-0020 Abstract The Cheer Pheasant (Catreus wallichii) is a protected species found abundantly to the west of Kali- gandaki River. This study was conducted in the Myagdi district located in the western part of Kaligandaki River from October 2016 to June 2017. Our aim was to assess the habitat and population status of Cheer Pheasant, us- ing acoustic survey and quadrate methods. A total of 38 breeding individuals were estimated in 7 bird/km2 density. The study also revealed that Cheer Pheasants showed a preference for exposure components of the habitat. They preferred moderately steep eastern slopes (10–35°) and steep southern slopes (35–67°) between 1800–2400 m el- evations. Additionally low tree density and high herbs density showed a significant effect on the habitat choice of the species. Poaching and habitat destruction are the major threats in the study site, calling upon a strategic man- agement plan for the long-term conservation of the Cheer Pheasant. Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation Objectives: Final Report 2013
United States Department of the Interior FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE WasMiAWoni ~c2 0~J40 Dear Interested Reader: Last spring, I asked each state within the range of the greater sage-grouse to join the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) in a first-of-its-kind, collaborative approach to develop range wide conservation objectives for the sage-grouse, both to inform our upcoming 2015 decision under the Endangered Species Act and to inform the collective conservation efforts of the many partners working to conserve the species. Recognizing that state wildlife agencies have management expertise and management authority for sage-grouse, we convened a Conservation Objectives Team (COT) of state and Service representatives. I asked the team to produce a recommendation regarding the degree to which threats need to be reduced or ameliorated to conserve the greater sage-grouse so that it would no longer be in danger of extinction or likely to become in danger of extinction in the foreseeable future. The final, peer-reviewed COT report (attached here) delineates such objectives, based upon the best scientific and commercial data available at the time of its release. I would like to clarify here the Service's interpretation of a few issues that I know are of interest to our state partners. The highest level objective identified in the report is to minimize habitat threats to the species so as to meet the objective of the 2006 Western Association ofFish and Wildlife Agencies' (W AFW A) Greater Sage-grouse Comprehensive Conservation Strategy: reversing negative population trends and achieving a neutral or positive population trend. -

DUDLEY* British Ornithologists’ Union, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PS, UK In its maintenance of the British List, the British Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee (BOURC) is responsible for assigning species to categories to indicate their status on the List. In 1995, the British Ornithologists’ Union (BOU) and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) held a conference on naturalized and introduced birds in Britain (Holmes & Simons 1996). This led to a review of the process of establishment of such species and the terms that best describe their status (Holmes & Stroud 1995) as well as a major review of the categorization of species on the British List (Holmes et al. 1998). The BOURC continues to review the occurrence and establishment of birds of captive origin in Britain. Heru Cahyono: [email protected] ABSTRACT Chestnut-bellied Hill-Partridge (Arborophila javanica) is an endemic species of Java, and also one of four endemic partridge species in the Greater Sunda islands. This species is constituted by three subspecies which differ in the color pattern of their head. The first reported sighting of Chestnut-bellied Hill-Partridge (Arborophila javanica lawuana) in Cangar is by Nijman in 2003, and for these past ten years the observation data has been inadequately obtained by local birdwatchers although its call is remarkable ; the call might be frequently heard by birdwatchers but got missed. Several information about this bird has been collected, including its sound recording that we used during observations. Observations were conducted around Cangar tourism object, particularly along the main road linking Pacet (Mojokerto) and Batu (Malang). The observations resulted in the data on its behavior and the best observation spot, that is in Lemahbang. We used Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers to investigate the genetic structure of two popula- tions of see-see partridge (Ammoperdix griseogularis, Galliformes) from the Suleiman range, in the Pakistani Himalayan region. The see-see partridge is a vulnerable species with a distribution in the Middle East and central Asia. The percentage of polymorphic bands (94.05%), Shannon Index (H=0.455) and Nei’s average gene diversity (IN=0.298) of A. griseogularis at species level were rather high when compared with other avian species. 17% of polymorphic loci showed statistically significant differences in their allelic frequencies. The GST (Nei’s coefficient of genetic variation) values indicated low levels of differentiation (GST=0.08). A genetic distance D of 0.05 indicated that both populations were to some degree in isolation but their differentiation was not signifi- cant. Overall, our genetic data can support action plans aiming to locally preserve differentiated genetic resources that, in the future, could potentially result in ecologically and behaviourally differentiated populations. In view of the rapid environmental changes that the Himalayan region has been experiencing in the last decade, this study could help in conservation plans.
