PRE – 27/11/20 Dear Parents/ Carers, Every Friday Morning Reception Would Normally Have PRE (Philosophy, Religion and Ethics) PRE – 27/11/20 Dear Parents/ Carers, Every Friday morning Reception would normally have PRE (Philosophy, Religion and Ethics) with Mr Ananda. As we are learning from home, some activities have been set for children to continue their learning. This half term, in line with our topic of Celebrations and Festivals, we have been focusing on the Diwali story for PRE and making connections to other faiths. Week 1: Introduction to Diwali and the characters; this was linked to our celebrations and the Hindu faith. Week 2: We explored the characters and worked as a class to describe them. Also, we made links to how Rama and Lakshman were brave and strong like warriors, like the Sikhs. Week 3 (last week): We used role play to start acting out the Diwali story. We discussed how Rama, Sita and Lakshman were sent to the forest and led a simple life, very much like Buddha when he left his palace to live a peaceful life in the forest. We also explored how Buddha and Rama meditated for peace of mind and guidance. Week 4 - 5 (this week) We would like you to discuss how Hanuman and the monkey army showed devotion to Lord Rama and worked as a team to build the bridge to Lanka. There is an opportunity here to make links to how Muslims and other faiths show devotion to their God or religion. We will also make links to the story of Moses next week (Judaism). Here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqfiwoWHMv4 Vanar Sena Build The Bridge - Ramayan - English The Ramayana is one of the great Hindu epics. It is ascribed to the Hindu sage Valmiki and forms an important part of the Hindu literature (smṛti), considered to be itihāasa. The Ramayana is one of the two great epics of Hinduism, the other being the Mahabharata. Activities (you may choose one or more of the below activities; please try to do at least one with your child) 1- What did Hanuman write on the rocks? Can you use your phonics to write Rama/ Jai Shri Ram? Maybe you could try to write it on some rocks from your garden! 2 - Can you build your own bridge out of blocks/ lego? As you build the bridge, imagine you are like Hanuman. What will your character be like? Brave or scared? How does Hanuman show love and devotion to Lord Rama? 3 - You could draw the scene and try to label it or talk about what you have drawn. Please complete the activity by next Friday 4th December and upload this work on Tapestry. Have fun and we look forward to seeing the children’s work. Miss Parmar and Mr Ananda .

  • Ram Janma Bhoomi Facts
1 “OM” Jai Sri Ram! Facts About Sri Ram Janma-Bhoomi Liberation Movement 01. Points of dispute (i) The Ayodhya dispute is not any ordinary temple-mosque dispute as the Temple of Nativity of Sri Ram is not just any other temple! (ii) It is a struggle to reclaim and regain the haloed Native Land/Birthplace of Bhagwan, and this Native Land is a Deity in itself and there can be no splitting up or division of the Deity. Ramlala Virajman (Infant Sri Ram sitting at His Birthplace) at His Native Land – is a perpetual minor and a juridical person – a legal entity – having a distinct identity and legal rights and obligations under the law. None else can have ownership rights over Bhagwan’s property. (iii) The birthplace is non-exchangeable. It cannot be swapped, bartered, sold or donated! (iv) The entire dispute is over about 1460 square yards (1209.026 Square Meter) of land – the length-width of which is maximum 140 X 100 feet. The 70 acres of land acquired by the Government of India is separate from it and is with the Government of India over which no lawsuit is pending in court. (v) The entire site under consideration in the court is that of Ramlala (Infant Ram) Virajman. It is the Place of Birth, Place of Pastimes, playing field and recreational area of Bhagwan. Describing the significance of this place, the Skanda Purana, written thousands of years ago, says that the Darshan (discerning/sighting) of the haloed birthplace of Sri Ram is liberating. (vi) Temples of adorable Deities of any community can be built in many places in the country, statues of great men can be put up at many places, but their place of manifestation/birth would be located at one place and that can never be dislocated or put out of place.

  • ITIHASAS ‘IT HAPPENED THUS’ the Two Great Epics of India
ITIHASAS ‘IT HAPPENED THUS’ The two great epics of India RAMAYANA THE ADI KAVYA The significance of the Ramayana The Ramayana is the first of the two great Itihasas of India. It was written by sage Valmiki. It consisted of 24,000 verses. It is considered by some as mythology. But to millions of Indians, it is history and offers a guide to right living. The Ramayana is considered by all Hindus as an embodiment of the Vedas, and that Lord Vishnu himself came upon earth to show people how life is to be lived. The greatness of Dharma shines in the life of Rama. The story of Rama On the banks of the Sarayu river, stood the beautiful city of Ayodhya, the capital of the kingdom of Kosala. The people of Ayodhya were peace loving and happy. No one was ignorant or poor. Everyone had faith in God and read the scriptures daily. But Dasaratha, the king, was unhappy. He was getting old and he didn’t have a son to inherit his throne. One day the king called upon his Chief advisor, Vasishtha. He said. "I am growing old. I long for a son, a son who will take my place on the throne."The priest knew all too well that his king needed to have a son. He replied, "Dasaratha, you will have sons. I shall perform a sacred rite to please the gods." At the same moment, the gods were growing more and angrier with Ravana, the ruler of the rakshasas, or demons. Ravana was no ordinary demon.

  • Ramayan Ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu Way of Life and the Contribution of Hindu Women, Amongst Others
Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks.

Contact: [email protected] 5 Music, the Media, and Communal Relations in North India, Past and Present PETER MANUEL MUCH OF THE DISCUSSION of communalism has attempted to ascertain the depth of the evident communal sentiment reflected in recent distur bances and the rise of Hindu militancy. Amrita Basu's essay above echoes a similar question about cultural history: do current developments reflect profound, long-standing, grass-roots animosity, or, alternately, are they merely the products of contemporary elite manipulation, ultimately con ditioned by factorsother than religious ones? While sociopolitical history is a natural focusfor such inquiries, the study of expressive culture may re veal much about social practices and attitudes, both elite and grass-roots, past and present. This chapter focuses on musical culture in north India, outlining relevant aspects of the social history of classical music, and pre senting some observations on twentieth-century folkand popular musics. My discussion of the contemporary scene will also refer to related forms of expressive culture, notably Hindi cinema and the sociopolitical uses of cassettes. Given the extraordinary diversity of South Asian musical genres and practices, any attempt to generalize about music's relation to communal ism is destined to a degree of superficiality.

TIF - Historical Roots of the Rise of Hindutva in West Bengal MONOBINA GUPTA May 7, 2021 Hindu organisations in Bengal have absorbed smaller oppositional caste-based identities into a sweeping fold of Hindu identity | Avishek Das/SOPA Images/ZUMA Wire/Alamy For a century, Hindu organisations have worked amongst Dalits in Bengal to incorporate them into the religious community, while the Left excised the question of caste from its discourse. These legacies have come to the fore as the BJP rises in the state. One summer evening two years ago, thousands of people gathered on the grounds of Dum Dum’s Central Jail Maidan. The Lok Sabha elections were ongoing. Kolkata was bracing for the last round of West Bengal’s 7-phase election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was about to deliver his last speech. On a reporting assignment for the polls, I spoke with some people milling about at the rear of the rally. A man distributing blank postcards amongst the people handed me one. “Write Jai Shri Ram and drop it in the nearest post box,” he said. Stamped on the postcard was the residential address of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee: 30B, Harish Chatterjee Road, Kolkata – 700026 (W.B.) As Modi’s helicopter whirred above, chants of Jai Shri Ram went up from the ground. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had run a polarising campaign, labelling undocumented Bangladeshi Muslim Page 1 www.TheIndiaForum.in May 7, 2021 immigrants as “termites and infiltrators,” and threatening to throw them out of Bengal if voted to power for a second consecutive term.

Abstract In the last 30 years, the nature of communalism in India has changed significantly. This increase in violence is commonly attributed to the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP); however, there are other factors that contributed to the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. Despite the considerable research done on the Gujarat riots, little is known about their cause, aside from the BJP’s apparent involvement.

  • Gujarat 2002 Riots: an Interpretive Analysis
GUJARAT 2002 RIOTS: AN INTERPRETIVE ANALYSIS by MUGDHA YEOLEKAR B.A., University of Pune, 2002 M.A., University of Pune, India 2002 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN THE PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIRMENTS FOR THE DEGREE in MASTER OF ARTS THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Political Science) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA December 2005 © Mugdha Yeolekar, 2005 ABSTRACT Considering the communal riots in 1969,1985, 1992 and recently in 2002, communal riots between Hindus and Muslims are not new phenomena in Gujarat. Yet the active participation of people from all sections of the society, the scale and the brutality of violence and the spread of violence in new areas (that used to be peaceful earlier) make Gujarat 2002 a unique phenomenon. Why did riots occur in Gujarat? Why are the religious identities so hardened and politicized in Gujarat? This thesis develops an eclectic approach towards understanding communal riots by integrating the approaches of Asagar Ali Engineer, Paul Brass and Ashutosh Varshney. The central argument of this thesis is that the existence of an "institutionalized riot system"- implying the support of the State- as Brass clams, is an essential condition for the occurrence of communal violence. Further, riots are endemic where the civil society organizations are inactive in controlling the riots as well as work in tandem with the State. Taking Gujarat 2002 riots as a case study, this thesis aims at developing a universal eclectic approach towards understanding communal violence.
