The IRC’s latest report illustrates how conflict, COVID-19 and the increasing impact of climate change are fueling unprecedented levels of global displacement - met with increasingly hostile conditions for refugees and displaced persons who are seeking safe haven worldwide. U.S. and European humanitarian leadership is sorely needed as some of the wealthiest countries in the world retreat from their obligations under international law to protect vulnerable populations fleeing conflict and persecution… Ver comunicado completo (en inglés) GUATEMALA – INFORME Informe de Monitoreo de Protección, mayo - junio de 2021 Por Danish Refugee Council y Pastoral de Movilidad Humana-CEG Reliefweb – 27 de julio de 2021 Durante los últimos 9 meses, se ha realizado el Monitoreo de Protección en Guatemala en el marco de una intervención conjunta de respuesta humanitaria entre el Consejo Danés para Refugiados (DRC) y la Pastoral de Movilidad Humana de la Conferencia Episcopal de Guatemala (PMH CEG). En ese tiempo, se han recopilados datos e información directamente de las personas refugiadas, migrantes, retornadas y desplazadas internas en el país (personas de interés) para identificar violaciones de derechos humanos y riesgos de protección, incluyendo amenazas de daño físico y psicológico o barreras de acceso a derechos y servicios. Esta recopilación sistemática y regular también arroja luz sobre las vulnerabilidades de la población y algunos de sus mecanismos de afrontamiento, positivos y negativos. Esta información cuantitativa se complementa con información cualitativa para aumentar la evidencia existente sobre las necesidades de protección en Guatemala. Effective this week, the IRC will withdraw from the process— intended to be temporary—of supporting requests for humanitarian exceptions to the U.S. expulsions policy. The IRC will finalize support for individuals who have already been identified and will submit their cases for consideration by DHS.     The Fight For The Supreme Court Is Just Beginning Sean McElwee Huff Post, 10/25/2018. Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court caught the attention of progressives. (BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI via Getty Images) Brett Kavanaugh is an associate justice of the Supreme Court, his confirmation solidifying a five-vote majority for the court’s extreme conservatives. Progressives are bracing themselves for the effects of a fully empowered right-wing court, and so they should. Yet most Americans are unaware of how deeply the court has already damaged American society, even without a conservative majority. Over the past two decades, the extremist court has resegregated schools, made it easier for abusive cops to avoid punishment, weakened protections for survivors, poisoned children, empowered racist vote suppressors and even thrown elections ― including the presidency ― to the Republican Party. Now, the limited restraints offered by Justice Anthony Kennedy have disappeared, and the threat is even greater. There is, however, one difference between the past two decades and now: Progressives are finally paying attention. The right, knowing that its agenda is deeply unpopular, has turned to the courts to override the popular will. The Supreme Court has rarely been a force for progress. In its most famous and popular decisions — such as Brown, Griswold and Obergefell — the court largely hedged its bets and acted after social movements had already paved the way. It has rarely acted, much less acted effectively, without support from the legislative and executive branches. Of course, the court can and sometimes does promote progressive change, but it’s a narrower avenue for change than many people assume.

This year’s seminar will take place via Zoom webinar. We anticipate the State Bar of Texas will approve the seminar’s curricula for a total of fifteen (15) hours of continuing legal education credit, of which three (3) hours qualify for ethics credit. The first section is July 22, 2020. The focus of the material has been tailored to benefit the less- experienced attorney or attorneys who would like a refresher of the federal system. A total of seven and a half hours (7.5) of continuing legal education credit, of which one and a half (1.5) hours of ethics credit are being presented at this session.
