Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida claims top spot in men’s indoor track: At the end of the two-day gamut of ups and downs that is the Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champion- ships, Florida coach Mike Holloway had a hard time thinking of anything that went wrong for the Gators. “I don’t know,” Holloway said. “The worst thing that happened to me was that I had a stomachache for a couple of days.” There’s no doubt Holloway left the Randal Tyson Track Center feeling better on Saturday night. That’s because a near-fl awless performance by the top-ranked Gators re- sulted in the school’s fi rst indoor national championship. Florida had come close before, fi nishing second three times in Holloway’s seven previous years as head coach. “It’s been a long journey and I’m just so proud of my staff . I’m so proud of my athletes and everybody associated with the program,” Holloway said. “I’m almost at a loss for words; that’s how happy I am. “It’s just an amazing feeling, an absolutely amazing feeling.” Florida began the day with 20 points, four behind host Arkansas, but had loads of chances to score and didn’t waste time getting started. After No. 2 Oregon took the lead with 33 points behind a world-record performance in the heptathlon from Ashton Eaton and a solid showing in the mile, Florida picked up seven points in the 400-meter dash. -

Peaks And Valleys: The History Of Competitive Distance Running In The U.S. Since 1954 Ben Raphelson Grinnell College 1 Introduction I began to run seriously in the summer of 2000 before I entered high school. At the time, I had very little knowledge of the sport beyond my team and the teams we competed against in our conference and state. That fall, attending my first cross-country state meet, I watched Dathan Ritzenhein, a senior and defending high school national champion obliterate the field and win the 5-kilometer race by nearly a minute. 1 The summer of 2001 was my first track season and happened to coincide with Alan Webb breaking Jim Ryun’s high school mile record. These performances came early in my involvement with the sport, and perhaps as a result, I did not truly appreciate their significance. I may have been dimly aware of a disconnect between these stunning high school performances and the woeful state of professional distance running in the United States, but took little notice. As my interest in the sport grew with my involvement in it, I heard romanticized stories about amazing U.S. runners from the past, giants like Jim Ryun and Frank Shorter. Growing up, I was without any such role model on the world- stage. As my academic interests turned towards history at Grinnell College, and my running career continued, I inevitably sought to combine the two. In the fall of 2006, I began discussions of a summer project with my research and academic advisors at Grinnell. My goal, put simply, was to figure out what happened to elite distance running in the United States. -

RUBEN PEDRO AGUILERA ANUARIO ATLETICO 2020 Memoria y estadísticas Federación Atlética de la Provincia de Buenos Aires RUBEN PEDRO AGUILERA ANUARIO ATLETICO 2020 Memoria y estadísticas Federación Atlética de la Provincia de Buenos Aires Dedicado a la memoria de Nómar Amri Fernández y Carlos Fiorini 4 Presentación El atletismo en particular, así como también el deporte en general, han sufrido terriblemente las consecuencias de la pandemia derivada del Covid-19 que está dejando secuelas en la sociedad de todo el mundo. Esto ha paralizado las actividades durante gran parte del año, circunstancia que se refleja muy negativamente en nuestras estadísticas. A pesar de ello la Federación Atlética de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, ha creído conveniente publicar esta edición, como viene sucediendo desde el 2008, haciéndolo acotado al ranking 2020 absoluto, pero manteniendo el resto de las secciones habituales. Es así como podemos ofrecerles la Memoria anual, las mejores marcas de todos los tiempos, las tablas de récords y el capítulo de varios, donde siempre incorporamos información extra de interés histórico. En este último aspecto hemos realizado un recordatorio del cuarto de siglo transcurrido desde la realización de los XII Juegos Panamericanos de 1995 que se desarrollaron en Mar del Plata. Florencia Borelli ha sido la mejor atleta del año. Su récord nacional del medio maratón y la ubicación preferencial obtenida en el Campeonato mundial de la especialidad así lo ameritan. Asimismo debemos resaltar que tres atletas bonaerenses obtuvieron medallas en el Sudamericano indoor. Ellos fueron Elián Larregina, oro en 400 y plata en posta, Mariana Borelli, plata en 800 y bronce en 1500, y Agustín Carrera por su tercer lugar en los 60 con vallas y plata en la posta.
