Edition 8 | 2019-2020 8 knoxville symphony orchestra WELCOME FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR Dear KSYOA parents and friends, Welcome to our Winter Concerts, where we once again celebrate our superb orchestras with two concerts. Our orchestras and Chamber Music Program are enjoying a wonderful year of growth with great music, rehearsals, and concerts. On February 17th, the Preludium, Philharmonia, Sinfonia, and Youth Chamber Orchestra perform, with the YCO welcoming KSO Principal Horn Jeffery Whaley as soloist, performing the complete Horn Concerto No. 1 of Wolfgang Mozart. Our February 24th concert features the Youth Orchestra, along with the winners of the 2019-2020 Concerto Competition: Miriam Ahrens, and Trey Barrett, bassoon—both of whom are Youth Orchestra members! Additionally, as we eagerly look forward to our trip to Prague and Vienna this summer, music heard on this evening’s performance will be part of our involvement in the Beethoven 250 Orchestra Festival. The Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus will celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven’s anniversary, while music from Bizet’s L’Arlesienne suites will anchor our performances in Europe. Our final concert will be April 27th, with all six of our orchestras together again on that program. Many thanks to the Knoxville Symphony League who support our endeavors financially and through volunteer time. You might have seen their faces as you purchased a ticket in the lobby this evening. Richard Fox and Ralph Cianelli have supported these two concerts for many seasons. Richard is the Vice President of Education for the Knoxville Symphony Society Board and his support of music education in our community is truly admirable. My thanks to all the parents, family members, teachers, and ensemble directors for the love, support, and musical guidance you provide these wonderful young students. On behalf of the KSYOA, I thank you for your continued support of our organization, of your children’s musical endeavors, and for attending our concerts. To ensure that every CYSO family—no matter their financial situation—can enjoy this fall's performances, we've replaced our normal ticketing with a pay-what-you-can donation. This fall's virtual performances will debut on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 7:00 pm CST. For those who are able, the suggested donation is $40 (the equivalent of $10 per ticket for a family of four) to access all fall performance videos. Visit cyso.org/concerts to purchase your tickets. If you cannot afford a ticket donation at this time, simply fill out the form with a $0 amount to receive the performance link at no charge. Though we wish we could gather in person, this fall's virtual format does allow for loved ones to watch our young musicians perform from anywhere. We encourage you to share the link to cyso.org/concerts with friends and family and invite them to "attend" the concert debut with the CYSO community on December 19! As always, tution only covers about 40% of the cost of our programs.
