[email protected] Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to explore the current status of public libraries of Varanasi. A structured questionnaire was designed and personally distributed to 100 respondents over a period of seven months for the study. Responses present a dismal outlook of the libraries. Financial deficit and lack of computers, infrastructure and staff have stagnated the development of these libraries. These libraries continue to stand the same way as they stood 60 years before. Keywords: Public libraries, Varanasi, Public library services. Collections Introduction Public libraries strive to be one of the most popular cultural institution and a few civic or communal spaces that can be used gratuitously by the people for education and enjoyment.
