Mário Rondón's second goal in as many games proved insufficient for all three points as the visitors from Berne equalised soon afterwards to make the final score 1-1. Previous meetings • CFR have fond memories of their first meeting with Roma as it was the club's very first UEFA Champions League fixture, on Matchday 1 of the 2008/09 season, and they beat their Italian hosts at the Stadio Olimpico 2-1 with a double from Argentinian midfielder Juan Culio. Roma, however, won the return in Romania 3-1 and also got the better of CFR when the clubs were paired again in the competition's group stage two years later, winning 2-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away. In both campaigns Roma went through to the round of 16 while CFR went out. • While CFR have scored in all four matches against Roma, they are the only Romanian team to have done so. Roma's four other games against teams from the country have all yielded clean sheets, most recently against Astra Giurgiu in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage (4-0 h, 0-0 a). • Since that momentous win in Rome on their first visit to the country CFR have returned to Italy three times and lost every game, including 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico against Lazio in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage. They had, however, won the reverse fixture 2-1 and went on to advance to the round of 32 at Lazio's expense. Form guide Roma • Roma finished fifth in Serie A last term to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage for the second season running and fourth time in all. Paulo Fonseca's side were defeated 2-0 by eventual winners Sevilla in last season's round of 16, which remains the furthest the club has gone in the competition – though they were UEFA Cup runners- up in 1990/91. • The Giallorossi's third participation in the UEFA Europa League group stage, like the previous two, resulted in qualification for the knockout phase, although unlike in 2009/10 and 2016/17 they did not top their group, finishing second to İstanbul Başakşehir despite beating the Turkish club home (4-0) and away (3-0). Their only other European win last season was 1-0 at home to Gent in the first leg of the round of 32 (1-1 a). • A 0-2 defeat against holders Real Madrid in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League is the only one of their last 16 European fixtures in the Italian capital that Roma have lost, winning 11. They remain unbeaten at home in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W6 D4). CFR • CFR completed a hat-trick of Romanian league titles in 2019/20, making it six in all, while also enjoying a club-record 16-match European campaign that began in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round and ended in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, where they provided stiff opposition for Sevilla, going out to the eventual winners only on the away goals rule (1-1 h, 0-0 a). • Having lost seven of their first eight fixtures in the UEFA Europa League proper, in 2009/10 and 2012/13, CFR recorded 12 points to finish runners-up in their group last season behind Celtic. Ousted from this season's UEFA Champions League on penalties by Dinamo Zagreb in the second qualifying round, they subsequently beat the champions of Sweden (Djurgården 1-0 away) and Finland (KuPS 3-1 at home) to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the third time. • CFR have not conceded a goal in any of their last four European matches outside Romania. However, they have lost six of their nine away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League proper, failing to score in every game bar the two wins, against Rennes last season (1-0) and this term's opening 2-0 victory at CSKA-Sofia. Links and trivia • CFR coach Dan Petrescu has a strong connection to Italy. He spent three seasons there as a Serie A player (Foggia 1991–93, Genoa 1993/94) and played both the first and last of his 95 matches for the Romanian national side against Italy. • CFR's two Croatian players have both spent time in Italy; midfielder Damjan Djoković with Monza, Cesena, Bologna, Livorno and Spezia, and Gabriel Debeljuh with Torino, Piacenza, Mantova and Este. • Jakub Vojtuš, CFR's Slovakian forward, spent three years in Milan at youth level with Internazionale, winning the prestigious Primavera title in 2011/12. 4 AS Roma - CFR 1907 Cluj Thursday 5 November 2020 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stadio Olimpico, Rome 5 AS Roma - CFR 1907 Cluj Thursday 5 November 2020 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stadio Olimpico, Rome Team facts AS Roma Formed: 1927 Nickname: Giallorossi (Yellow and Reds) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Cup: (1984) • UEFA Cup: (1991) Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 3 (2001) Italian Cup: 9 (2008) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2019/20: round of 16 2018/19: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2017/18: UEFA Champions League semi-finals 2016/17: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2015/16: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2014/15: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2013/14: did not participate in UEFA competition 2012/13: did not participate in UEFA competition 2011/12: play-offs 2010/11: UEFA Champions League round of 16 Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-0 twice, most recently v Gorica 28/09/00, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 1-7: Gent v Roma 06/08/09, UEFA Europa League third qualifying round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-7: Roma v Bayern München 21/10/14, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest away defeat 7-1: Manchester United v Roma 10/04/07, UEFA Champions League quarter-finals second leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 7-0 twice, most recently v Gorica (see above) • Biggest away win 1-7: Gent v Roma (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Roma v Fiorentina 19/03/15, round of 16 second leg • Heaviest away defeat 3-0: Karlsruhe v Roma 15/10/96, second round first leg CFR 1907 Cluj Formed: 1907 Nickname: Feroviarii (Railwaymen) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Intertoto Cup: (2005) Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 6 (2020) 6 AS Roma - CFR 1907 Cluj Thursday 5 November 2020 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stadio Olimpico, Rome Romanian Cup: 4 (2016) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2019/20: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2018/19: play-offs (having transferred from UEFA Champions League second qualifying round) 2017/18: did not take part in UEFA competition 2016/17: did not take part in UEFA competition 2015/16: did not take part in UEFA competition 2014/15: third qualifying round 2013/14:
