We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna.

W. HALL Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, 20560-0127, USA Abstract Two new riodinid genera in the subtribe Nymphidiina (tribe Nymphidiini) are described from the lowlands of the Ama- zon basin. Livendula Hall, n. gen., is described with huebneri Butler as its type species, and the following eleven species are transferred to Livendula (n. combs.) from Adelotypa Warren: amasis Hewitson, aminias Hewitson, aristus Stoll, balista Hewitson, epixanthe Stichel, huebneri Butler, jasonhalli Brévignon & Gallard, leucocyana Geyer, leucophaea Hübner, pauxilla Stichel, and violacea Butler. Minotauros Hall, n. gen., is described with lampros Bates as its type spe- cies, and the following two species are transferred to Minotauros (n. combs.) from Adelotypa: lampros Bates, and cha- ressa Stichel. Key words: Adelotypa, Amazon, morphology, Nymphidiini, taxonomy Introduction The purpose of this paper is to describe two new Amazonian riodinid genera in the subtribe Nymphidiina, one of four subtribes in the large riodinine tribe Nymphidiini (Hall, 1999, 2002; Hall & Harvey, 2002a; Callaghan & Lamas, 2004), for species that heretofore have been treated in Adelotypa Warren, 1895. The Nymphidiina is a sizeable group of over 150 species that has long represented one of the most taxonomically challenging in the whole family (Harvey, 1987). The task of crafting a comprehensive species-level phylogenetic revision and new generic classification for the subtribe is nearly complete (Hall, in prep.).

Bacterial endosymbionts are common across insects, but we often lack a deeper knowledge of their prevalence across most organisms. Next-generation sequencing approaches can characterize bacterial diversity associated with a host and at the same time facilitate the fast and simultaneous screening of infectious bacteria. In this study, we used 16S rRNA tag encoded amplicon pyrosequencing to survey bacterial communities of 310 samples representing 221 individuals, 176 colonies and 95 species of ants. We found three distinct endosymbiont groups—Wolbachia (Alphaproteobacteria: Rickettsiales), Spiroplasma (Firmicutes: Entomoplasmatales),

  • 190205 USAID Colombia Brief Final to Joslin
COUNTRY BRIEF I. FRAGILITY AND CLIMATE RISKS II.COLOMBIA III. OVERVIEW Colombia experiences very high climate exposure concentrated in small portions of the country and high fragility stemming largely from persistent insecurity related to both longstanding and new sources of violence. Colombia’s effective political institutions, well- developed social service delivery systems and strong regulatory foundation for economic policy position the state to continue making important progress. Yet, at present, high climate risks in pockets across the country and government mismanagement of those risks have converged to increase Colombians’ vulnerability to humanitarian emergencies. Despite the state’s commitment to address climate risks, the country’s historically high level of violence has strained state capacity to manage those risks, while also contributing directly to people’s vulnerability to climate risks where people displaced by conflict have resettled in high-exposure areas. This is seen in high-exposure rural areas like Mocoa where the population’s vulnerability to local flooding risks is increased by the influx of displaced Colombians, lack of government regulation to prevent settlement in flood-prone areas and deforestation that has Source: USAID Colombia removed natural barriers to flash flooding and mudslides. This is also seen in high-exposure urban areas like Barranquilla, where substantial risks from storm surge and riverine flooding are made worse by limited government planning and responses to address these risks, resulting in extensive economic losses and infrastructure damage each year due to fairly predictable climate risks. This brief summarizes findings from a broader USAID case study of fragility and climate risks in Colombia (Moran et al.

Two females laid eggs on the old leaves of an unidentified Triplaris sp. (Polygonaceae), a myrmecophytic plant typically known as ‘Triplaria’ or ‘novice’ tree, inhabited by aggressive ‘taxi’ ants of the genus Pseudomyrmex sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). These observations suggest that M. grandis caterpillars live associated with one of the most harmful types of Amazon ant-plant symbiosis.
