E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna. -
DDT-Resistance and Dieldrin-Resistance in Anopheles Albimanus*

DAVIDSON' The nature and mode of inheritance of the component resistances of a multi-resistant strain of Anopheles albimanus from El Salvador are described. Dieldrin-resistance is shown to be dependent on a single, semi-dominant, geneticfactor and imparts cross-resistance to other cyclodiene chlorinated hydrocarbons and to y-BHC. DDT-resistance imparts cross-resistance to DDT-analogues and is dependent on a single, recessive, genetic factor. The two resistances are separate entities and can, in fact, be separated. The modes of inheritance of the two types of resistance are the same in both larvae and adults. Bacterial endosymbionts are common across insects, but we often lack a deeper knowledge of their prevalence across most organisms. Next-generation sequencing approaches can characterize bacterial diversity associated with a host and at the same time facilitate the fast and simultaneous screening of infectious bacteria. ABSTRACT: The biting activity of a population of Aedes scapularis (Rondani), Hae- magogus capricornii Lutz and Hg. leucocelaenus (Dyar and Shannon) in Southern Brazil was studied between March 1980 and April 1983. Data were obtained with 25-hour human bait catches in three areas with patchy residual forests, named "Jacaré-Pepira", "Lupo" Farm, and "Sta. Helena" Farm, in the highland region of S. Paulo State (Brazil). Data obtained on Ae. scapularis were compared with those formerly gathered in the "Ribeira'' Valley lowlands, and were similar, except in the "Lupo" Farm study area, where a pre- crepuscular peak was observed, not recorded at the "Jacaré-Pepira" site or in the "Ribeira" Valley. In all the areas this mosquito showed diurnal and nocturnal activity, but was most active during the evening crepuscular period. These observations support the hypo- thesis about the successful adaptation of Ae. scapularis to man-made environments and have epidemiological implications that arise from it. As for Haemagogus, results obtained on the "Lupo" and "Sta. Helena" regions agree with previous data obtained in several other regions and show its diurnal activity. The proximity of "Lupo" Farm, where Hg. capricornii and Hg. leucocelaenus showed considerable activity, to "Araraquara" city where Aedes aegypti was recently found, raises some epidemiological considerations about the possibility of urban yellow fever resurgence. -

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

El presente estudio identifico´ areas´ de endemismo en el norte de Sur America´ haciendo enfasis´ en Colombia, utilizando insectos como grupo focal. Para los analisis´ se utilizo´ el algoritmo heur´ıstico de NDM y el analisis´ de redes NAM. Ademas´ se realizo´ un analisis´ de parsimonia de endemismo (PAE) para jerarquizar aquellas areas´ obtenidas mediante NDM. Con ambas metodolog´ıas se obtuvo un total de 42 areas´ de endemismo y la jerarquizacion´ resulto´ en nueve clados soportados por al menos dos taxa y seis clados no informativos. Las zonas de mayor grado de endemicidad resultaron ser el Choco´ biogeografico´ y las cordilleras de los Andes, posiblemente como resultado de la alta pluviosidad y las condiciones diversas de alta montana˜ respectivamente. -

In addition, five new species are describe from eastern Ecuador.
