This Overview document sets out the context for Natural England’s proposals to improve public access to and along the stretch of coast between Bamburgh and the Scottish Border (including Holy Island). It explains key common principles and background underlying the detailed proposals that we make in our compendium of linked but legally separate statutory reports, each covering a single length of coast within the stretch. Each of these reports should be read in conjunction with this Overview. Taken together, these reports explain how we propose to implement the England Coast Path (“the trail”) on this stretch of coast, and detail the likely consequences in terms of the wider ‘Coastal Margin’ that will be created if our proposals are approved by the Secretary of State. Our reports also set out: any proposals we think are necessary for restricting or excluding coastal access rights to address particular issues, in line with the powers in the legislation; and any proposed powers for the trail to be capable of being relocated on particular sections (through “roll-back”), if this proves necessary in the future because of coastal change. So although this Overview has multiple reports associated with it, each report relating to a particular part of the stretch makes free-standing proposals, and seeks approval for them by the Secretary of State in their own right under section 52 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. We have carefully considered any potential environmental impacts of improving public access to this stretch of coast, and made any necessary adjustments to our proposals prior to publication in order to address these. Considerations in relation to environmental matters are explained in Section 6 of this Overview and relevant reports for each length of coast. Links are provided to relevant separately published documentation where appropriate. The reports are published on our web pages as a series of separate documents, alongside this Overview and more general information about how the Coastal Access programme works. Each report is accompanied by detailed Proposals Maps for the relevant length of coast. The

The cottage is within an easy walk to Budle Bay which is a beautiful bird sanctuary. The whole area is part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve and is very popular with bird watchers. Surrounded by unspoilt countryside, yet within two miles of the A1 it is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the Northumberland coast. Bamburgh is a thriving village with independent shops, public houses, restaurants/hotels and of course the renowned Bamburgh Castle. The Property The front porch opens into the entrance hall leading to all ground floor rooms. There is a spacious dining kitchen with fitted wall and floor units, range cooker, electric cooker, dish washer, washing machine and integrated fridge freezer. A door leads from here into the bright and spacious sitting room with open fire with stone surround. Glass doors lead directly into the conservatory which doubles up as a separate dining room if desired. The master bedroom with en-suite shower room has views over the rear garden and glass doors leading into a small conservatory which in turn gives access to the outside patio area.

    CHAPTER 9 Low Newton-by-the-Sea to Marshall Meadows Point, Berwick-upon- Tweed (Block 4 NMP) 9.1 Introduction The area covered extends from Low Newton-by-the-Sea to the Scottish Border at Marshall Meadows Point. It falls within a single major topographical unit, the Northumberland coastal plain. Accordingly, this survey of the heritage assets has been undertaken with reference to the Historic Environment Records (HERs) maintained by Northumberland County Council. This existing data base has been enhanced by the transcription of aerial photographs held by the National Monuments Record and carried out to the standards of the National Mapping Programme (NMP). This work is referred to as the Air Photograph Transcription Exercise (APTE). This entire section of coastline, with the exception of 2.5km at the mouth of the River Tweed, has been designated as a ‘Heritage Coast’ while the section as far north as Spittal lies within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). These two designations also include the Farne Islands and Holy Island. In addition, the whole of the foreshore zone has been designated as a SSSI while the Farne Islands and the foreshore from Budle Bay to Cheswick Black Rocks are National Nature Reserves. The National Trust manages sections of coastal sand dunes at Beadnell Bay and at St Aidan’s Dunes, North Sunderland. The Farne Islands are also managed by the Trust as is Lindisfarne Castle and the adjoining foreshore on Holy Island. 9.1.1 Soils and landuse The solid geology of this section of the coast is described in Chapter 3, though throughout most of the coastal zone this solid geology is mantled by varying thicknesses of glacial drift and other superficial deposits of Pleistocene and Holocene age.

    In search of St Aidan and St Cuthbert Martin on Holy Island, with Lindisfarne Castle in the distance For many years I'd wanted to visit the sites where Christianity was re-introduced into England after the departure of the Roman legions. St Aidan and St Cuthbert were two of the key figures in the renaissance of the Christian faith. The statue of St Aidan near to Lindisfarne Priory. St Aidan was born in Ireland and became a monk on the island of Iona. When King Oswald of Northumbria invited missionaries to preach the Gospel in his kingdom, Aidan was sent. He established a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne which became the centre of missionary activity in the north of England. It also became a valuable centre of learning and an important training ground for those who would continue the work of evangelisation. Aidan was consecrated a bishop and made Lindisfarne his headquarters. He worked with King Oswald and often travelled with him on missionary journeys, the king acting as interpreter, for at first Aidan was not able to speak the Northumbrian dialect. Bede described Aidan as "a man of remarkable gentleness, goodness and moderation, zealous for God". Oswald's death in battle was a great blow to Aidan but his successor, King Oswin, was equally dear to him. After Oswin's murder Aidan only survived a fortnight, dying it is said of a broken heart at Bamburgh on 31st August 651. An image of St Cuthbert carrying an Eider or 'Cuddy/Cuthbert' duck, a species he is reputed to have helped to conserve.
