Young super-Neptune offers clues to the origin of close-in exoplanet 21 June 2016, by Rebecca Johnson planets in the same planetary system, or with more distant stars. These scenarios can be tested observationally by searching for young planets and studying their orbits. If the close-in population formed in place or migrated in through interactions with the natal disk, they reach their final orbital distances early on and will be found close in at young ages. In comparison, migrating a planet inward through interactions with other planets or more distant stars is effective on much longer timescales. If the latter processes dominate, planets will not be found close to their K2-33 b, shown in this illustration, is one of the youngest stars when they are young. exoplanets detected to date. It makes a complete orbit around its star in about five days. These two characteristics combined provide exciting new directions for planet-formation theories. K2-33b could have formed on a farther out orbit and quickly migrated inward. Alternatively, it could have formed in situ, or in place. It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations. -

You may have noticed that this newsletter is showing up a little bit later than usual, and it’s for good reason: release of the newsletter will now happen after the monthly business meeting so that we can have a chance to keep everybody up to date on the latest information. Sometimes, this will mean the newsletter shows up a couple of days late. But, the upshot is that you’ll now be able to see what we discussed at the recent business meeting and have time to digest it before our general meeting in case you want to give some feedback. Now that we’re on the new format, business meetings (and the oft neglected Light Pollution Committee Meeting), are going to start being open to all members of the club again by simply joining up in the respective chat rooms the Wednesday before the first Monday of the month—which I encourage people to do, especially if you have some ideas you want to see the club put into action. -

Since 1950s, several authors have reported the so-called anomalous gravity during the total solar eclipses through various experiments. To address this issue, in the moment of the total solar eclipse of 9 March 2016 passing most regions in Indonesia, we undertook microgravity measurements using two precise gravimeters. The measurements were made at two locations: (1) Poso (central Sulawesi), a location close to the centre passage of the total eclipse and (2) Lembang (West Java), the site of Bosscha Observatory, where the partial solar eclipse occurred. -

A group of people crowding around a portable telescope, with two professional astronomers at the “helm”. They take turn to peek hard through the eye piece of the telescope, while the rest gaze directly towards the western horizon, and look at the computer monitor connected to the telescope (Figure 1). Some are noticeably tense, but most just enjoy the opportunity to be in the scientifically what considered as sacred ground: an ageing astronomical observatory. Figure 1. People trying to see the new moon The object of interest? The moon. The thin sliver of new moon. Once the sun sets and the western sky basks in orange, the crowd waits in anxiety, till the sky is dark enough, for human eyes, to detect the defining crescent in the sky. The Islamic scholars have, despite minor detailed differences, universally accepted the definition of a new month in the Hijriyah calendar, a lunar calendar; a new month is set to begin in the evening the new moon is observed after the sun is set. The moon must have passed its conjunction with the Sun preceding the sunset. The verb “to observe” here is interpreted as observation by unaided eye; a tradition that has been propagated since the seventh century, benefitting minimally from the ongoing technological and scientific advancement in the field of astronomy. -

Here Korokan Had Been Located
■ Asteroid “Korokan” and Fukuoka In 1982, an object located between Mars and Jupiter was discovered by two astronomers at Tokyo Astronomical Observatory, the forerunner of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. This object was named “Korokan” and in November 2017 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognized the ➡ name. Korokan was a multipurpose guest house and lodgings from the 7th to 11th Asteroid Korokan Century in what is now Jonai, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City. At that time this area was a window for exchange between Japan and other countries. Korokan was used by many delegates, merchants, national envoys to the continent, and religious pilgrims. This location which was home to two historically important buildings has a double registry as a National Historic Site. Now it has become Maizuru Park and is famous for its cherry blossoms. Together with Ohori Park, which had been the moat adjacent to Fukuoka Castle, it serves as a “Central Park” where many citizens take a walk or view the cherry blossoms. If you stretch your legs a little, from here you can reach Hakata Bay or Mount Abura. The ocean and mountains exist encircling Fukuoka City, making it a convenient and easy-to-live-in city blending the natural and urban. On the other hand, Fukuoka City is also a city of international exchange visited by many foreigners. -
