Much in-fighting, briefing and counter-briefing has already taken place but will Corbyn’s speech on Tuesday 29th September bring together a divided party or be the seed that pushes the Parliamentary Labour Party into open revolt? This will be much clearer once the leader's speech concludes on Tuesday afternoon and his party colleagues react. Political Intelligence has put together this guide of energy fringe events you should look out for (including a few must-attend events) together with a reminder of Jeremy Corbyn's 10-point energy plan as outlined during his leadership campaign. 2 Jeremy Corbyn's 10 Point Energy Plan Corbyn was never meant to be Ed Miliband's successor as Labour leader - he was nominated initially by his parliamentary colleagues to simply widen the debate. Corbyn's preference for greater state control in the energy sector should not be dismissed entirely - whilst renationalisation is unlikely to become official government policy any time soon, the populist calls for greater state control are likely to gain traction and put pressure on the government. All eyes will be on Lisa Nandy, appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. With very little energy policy experience, Nandy will be keen to stamp her authority and bat away accusations of inexperience. 24 September 2015 • 2 During his leadership campaign, Jeremy Corbyn published his 'Protecting our Planet Manifesto' which included a 10 point energy plan: 1. Make Britain take the lead in developing the clean energy economy of the future 2. Establish an Energy Commission to draft a fundamental shift in UK energy thinking 3. Produce a route-map into tomorrow's 'smart energy' systems 4. Bring new partners into policy making - local authorities, communities, energy co-operatives and 'smart' technology companies 5. Conduct a root and branch review of energy market subsidies 6. Ensure that energy industry, not the public, meet the costs of their own clean-up 7. Re-define the roles of Ofgem, National Grid and the Competition and Markets Authority 8. Allow communities to be owners of local energy systems 9. Examine the role of the state as guarantor of last resort; with more direct responsibility for the nation's back-up generation, high voltage grid and interconnectors 10. Commit Britain to binding international climate change commitments; making national and local targets. 3 The Fringe Listings: What to look out for 3.1 Monday 28th September 2015 8.30am - A Connected Future: UK Infrastructure in the 21st Century Chair: Anne Ashworth, Assistant Editor and Property Editor, The Times Speakers: Seema Malhotra MP (invited); Nigel Milton, Director of External Affairs, Heathrow Airport; Andrew Carter, Deputy Chief Executive, Centre for Cities Location: Durham Hall - Sherwood, Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel 24 September 2015 • 3 12.30pm - Paying Less For Energy Chair: Damian Carrington, the Guardian Speakers: Peter Smith, National Energy Action; Pete Moorey, Which?; Jonathan Reynolds (invited); Huw-Irranca Davies MP, Chair, Environmental Audit Committee Location: Hall 7 - Avon, Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel 12.45pm - Developing a Vision for Energy in Buildings Chair: Dave Sowden, CEO, Sustainable Energy Association Speakers: Jonathan Reynolds (invited); Trevor Hutchings, Head of Advocacy, WWF UK; Dr Alan Whitehead MP, Chair, PRASEG Location: The Grand Hotel, 97-99 King's Rd, Brighton.
