  • Australian Customs Notice 2006/47
AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS NOTICE NO. 2006/46 Notices of Objection to Importation Trade Marks Act 1995 The Trade Marks Act 1995 allows the registered owner, or in certain circumstances, the authorised user of a trade mark to object to the importation of goods which infringe their trade mark. The registered owner, or authorised user does this by lodging a Notice of Objection with the Australian Customs Service (Customs). Unless revoked, a Notice of Objection remains in force for a period of two years from the date of commencement. The attached Schedule sets out the registered owners and authorised users who have lodged Notices of Objection under the Trade Marks Act 1995 since June 2006 (ACN 2006/25). The Notices notify the objections of these registered owners and authorised users to the importation of goods, which infringe their trade mark or trade marks. Descriptions of the relevant trade marks are also set out in the Schedule. A detailed list of all current Notices of Objection is available on the Customs website at http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=493 For each particular trade mark described, the Schedule makes reference to a particular “class” of goods. This refers to the classes of goods prescribed in Schedule 1 to the Trade Marks Regulations 1995 and along with a description of the goods, is used to describe the type of goods for which the particular trade mark is registered. Prospective importers of such goods should seek further advice from Customs regarding the ambit of any Notice of Objection set out in the Schedule.

Movies on the Run http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/17/technology/circuits/17boyy.ht... July 17, 2003 Movies on the Run By MICHEL MARRIOTT EMEMBER the first Walkman? It has been almost a quarter-century since Sony's portable cassette player changed the way people listen to music on the go. Now another form of entertainment is getting the Walkman treatment. Palm-size portable video players are beginning to change where and how people watch movies, cartoons and music videos. The gadgets, which play compressed video files on a small screen, are designed to be generally less expensive and more convenient than portable DVD players, which have been available for several years. None of these new-generation players, in fact, play DVD's. Instead, using advances in storage and compression technology, most store video on hard drives or memory cards, much the way digital audio players store music files. "It's just what happened to music," said Ulrich Neumann, director of the Integrated Media Systems Center at the University of Southern California. "We went from cassette tape to CD's to MP3 on memory chips or tiny hard drives. What is happening now is that you have digital movie files going from DVD's down to probably small micro drives." A few of these players are already in stores. At the high end, Archos has released AV320 Cinema to Go, a hard-drive-based player that costs $600. At the low end, the toy manufacturer Hasbro unveiled a hand-held player for children last week called VideoNow. The $50 device plays 30-minute cartoons on a monochrome screen.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/wwwj.15 RESEARCH Electronic Life Histories: At Home with E-waste Waste Materialities and Meaning Shannon McMullen, Laura Zanotti and H. Kory Cooper The interdisciplinary Electronic Life Histories Project integrates behavioral archaeology, engineering, anthropology, art, material culture, and science and technology studies to employ a life history model, community-based research and creative engagement to address the making of electronic waste. Focused in the Greater Lafayette area of Indiana, which is home to a major university, this project examines the entanglements among people, electronics and waste-making. Specifically, this paper focuses on a significant interstitial stage between reuse and discard. We consider the stories and meanings affixed to electronic objects once they have entered people’s homes, and the complex lives they have before they are discarded, reused, or repurposed. We find ‘closet fill’ or junk drawers of electronic devices, bits, bytes and peripherals are often unintentional collections that are situationally valued through a constellation of factors that include emotional attachments, technological obsolescence, imagined use-value, as well as discrepancies between perceived value and market value. While the problem of closet fill has been discussed by scholars, how electronics enter this interstitial stage, why they remain and what motivates movement out of this part of the life history of objects have not been closely examined.
