Dennis Jankowski, pres- ident of the Manistique Tourism Council, said a number of special events will be held on the trail in 2020 in honor of its anniversary. According to Jankowski, the Haywire Grade Trail — which follows the former Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad — was the first of its kind in the state. “It’s Michigan’s first (rail-trail),” he said. The trail has been designated as a Pure Michigan Trail, as well. The Haywire Grade Trail plays a crucial role in the Upper Peninsula’s trail system. “It’s basically the primary trail to get from the central-lower U.P. to the central-upper U.P.,” Jankowski said. A wide variety of people use the Haywire Grade Trail, including snowmobilers and ATV fans. “Those are probably the primary users,” The Haywire Grade Trail Jankowski said of these groups. on June 6, a bike ride on Aug. 22 and an The trail is also used for biking and hiking, ATV/ORV ride on Oct. 3. Passing by a lighthouse on a Riptide Ride boat By Jordan Beck Commercial Street, Munising. For more information, or to buy tickets for the tour, visit Over the past decade, Riptide Ride has given www.riptideride.com. n Munising residents and visitors a look at his- toric Grand Island on its jet boat tours. Owner Joni Flynn opened Riptide Ride in 2010. “It’s just a fun way to see the cliffs out on the water,” Flynn said. Business has been good for Riptide Ride, Flynn said. She said one of the tour’s unique features is its itinerary. “We see the most cliffs of any ... boat tour in town,” she said. The tour takes passengers to Grand Island. There, they ride past 25 miles of Pictured Rocks cliffs, waterfalls, two lighthouses — including North Light, the world’s highest lighthouse above sea level — and the occa- sional bald eagle. Throughout the tour, nar- ration provides riders with historical context. Though the sights of Grand Island are the focus of Riptide Rides’ tours, Flynn said the tours also feature some stunts. “We do some spins with the boat to break up the tour,” she said. Each ride takes about an hour and a half from start to finish. “You can see a lot of sights in a short amount of time,” Flynn said. By Clarissa Kell Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours, located at 1204 Commercial Street in Munising, has been offering interested individuals a unique look at shipwrecks along Grand Island and Munising Bay in Lake Superior since 1992. According to Captain Theresa Karr of Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours, the idea for the tour all came about from Captain Pete Lindquist as a way to provide people a bet- ter advantage point in viewing the history of the depths of Lake Superior without diving in themselves. Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours is a Lind- quist family business. Together they are called Tahquamenon Falls, and both are located on the Tahquamenon River. The Upper Falls is the second largest water- fall east of the Mississippi River. The falls are 200 feet wide, and drop 50 feet. By the Lower Falls is Lower Falls Island, an island surrounded by a cascade of smaller waterfalls. You can get to the island by rent- ing one of the many rowboats available at the bottom of the Lower Falls, and travel across the basin. Once there, many people walk the half-mile trail around the island. Between the two falls is the River Trail, a trail that follows the coast between the falls, one of many hiking trails in and around the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Great Pines Trail is four miles long and starts and ends at the Upper Falls. The trail is named after two large pine trees on the trail. According to Pure Michigan officials, des- ignated Pure Michigan Trails provide access to national, state or regional scenic resources of high quality and splendor, and articulate the natural essence of Michigan. “Michigan is known for having thousands of miles of hiking, biking and kayaking trails, but the trails and communities that receive this designation are truly outstanding and embody what Pure Michigan is all about,” said David Lorenz, vice president of Travel Michigan. “We are pleased to partner with the Michigan

Department of Natural Resources to honor these trails and trail towns.” To qualify as one of the trails, routes may be a single trail or combination of trails and must be more than a mile in length, open to the public and substantially completed. The trails and towns receiving Pure Mich- igan designations comprise some of the elite Michigan trail experiences. They promote healthy lifestyles, conserve natural and cul- tural resources in the area, display iconic sig- nage, increase awareness of trails for tourism and provide a catalyst for economic activity in their associated communities. Those qualities, officials say, fit the Haywire Grade perfectly. Reese said the Pure Michigan designation, scheduled commemorative events and rec- ognition the Haywire Grade is receiving are great for the region and the state. “It’s exciting for everybody,” he said. “This has been building momentum for years.” For more on the Haywire Grade celebration and background, go to VisitManistique.com.
