These estimates were used to calculate a nondimensional number that represents the proportion, or percentage, of predicted larval fish in the EEZ that were potentially exposed to oil from the Deepwater Horizon incident. The proportion exposed is a function of the 'production schedule' of the population, the location and timing of that productivity, and the spatio-temporal distribution of surface oil. Introduction The Deepwater Horizon Incident remains the largest oil spill in a marine environment in United States history. Vast quantities of oil and other contaminants were discharged into the northern Gulf of Mexico from late April to mid-July in 2010. -

THANKSGIVING WITH THE CAST OF “EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND” LET’S SHMUES--CHAT The Yiddish word for “turkey” is “indik.” “Dankbar” is the Yiddish word for “thankful.” By MARJORIE GOTTLIEB WOLFE 46 “milyon” turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving. Turkey consumption has increased 104% since 1970. And 88% of Americans surveyed by the National Turkey Federation eat turkey on this holiday. Marie Barone (Doris Roberts) is devoted to making sure her boys are well-fed. She gets her adult children back with food. It’s like a culinary hostage trade-off. Marie wants Debra, her daughter-in-law, to be a better cook. She calls her “cooking-challenged” and thinks that she should live directly opposite Zabar’s. Marie want the children to have better food. She says, “A mother’s love for her sons is a lot like a dog’s piercing bark: protective, loyal, and impossible to ignore. Many episodes of “Everybody Loves Raymond” dealt with Thanksgiving. Paul Standish (UCL Institute of Education) Abstract Is there something that lies beneath the surface of our ordinary ways of speaking? Philosophy sometimes encourages the all-too-human thought that reality lies just outside our ordinary grasp, hidden beneath the surface of our experience and language. The present discussion concentrates initially on a few connected paragraphs of Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations (particularly ##431-435). Wittgenstein leads the reader to the view that meaning is there in the surface of the expression. Yet how adequate is Wittgenstein’s treatment of the sounds and ink-marks, the materiality of the sign? With some reference to Emerson, Stanley Cavell, and Jacques Derrida, my discussion explores how far a more adequate account of the sign can coincide with the claim that nothing is hidden. It exposes phony obsessions with transparency, which in a culture of accountability have had a distorting effect on education and the wider social field. It endorses confidence in the reality of ordinary words. Keywords Language, reality, expression, Wittgenstein, Emerson, Cavell, Derrida I want to pursue the alleged error of thinking that there must be something that lies beneath the surface of our ordinary ways of speaking about our reactions and responses to the world. A popular form of this is found when you are talking to someone and they say in response: “Just wait a minute while I process what you have said.” They are not, as their language more or less makes clear, quite reasonably telling you that they want to think over what you have said: they are informing you of a mental operation, a brain process that needs to be carried out before they can answer.1 There are 1 Such a response is familiar enough. -

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR REV. BENEDETTO J.J. PARIS ANNULMENTS--CONCERNS AND QUESTIONS--PART I: Because of the many questions and concerns that have been raised concerning the annulment process, I would like to use my column to occasionally address some of these issues and hopefully clear up any misunderstandings that some may have about this very important ministry in the Church. Many of the priests have addressed me with their inquiries about the annulment process. For example, one of the questions is: Why does the process take so long? One of the reasons is that we need much information to process and annulment. For example, on the Annulment Application, it states that the tribunal needs certified or notarized civil copies of every marriage license and divorce decree as well as a baptismal certificate for the Catholic parties only. Sometimes, we receive an incomplete application, and of course, we have to send a letter to the Petitioner (the one who applies for the annulment) informing him or her that they have not sent enough information for us to begin looking at the case. If you are working with a person who is in need of or desires and annulment, please insure that these documents are a part of the application. It states on the opening page of the application that these materials must be sent all together at once and then it implores the Petitioner to not send an “incomplete case.” If it is possible, the Petitioner must also send a fee of $200. What this is used for is to offset some of the expenses that are incurred in processing the annulment. -

1 Trends Shaping Education 2014 Spotlight 6 Modern Families Families in the OECD are changing. The nuclear family – mother and father, married with children –is becoming less common. The number of reconstituted and single- parent households is rising, families are becoming smaller and individuals are deciding to have children later in life, or not at all. Education plays an important role in supporting these modern families as well as traditional ones, and ensuring that learning needs are met for all. Love then Marriage? Over the past 40 years, marriage rates in OECD countries have fallen dramatically, from 8 marriages per 1 000 people in 1970 to only 5 in 2010. As can be seen in Figure 1, the decrease in marriage rates has been particularly pronounced in countries like Hungary, Portugal and Slovenia, where marriage rates declined by more than half in that time (OECD, 2011a). Furthermore, the average age of first marriage (29.7) has risen above the average age of first childbirth (27.7), signalling that more people now have children without getting married (OECD, 2014a). In the same time period, the average divorce rate in the OECD doubled from 1.2 divorces per 1 000 people to 2.4. This has led to a higher number of single-parent and step-parent families. SHOW BIZ Maria Faisal Everybody Loves Raymond Based on the real-life experiences of Ray Romano, Everybody Loves Raymond, the popular sitcom ran from September 1996 to May 2005. Everybody Loves Raymond, a very popular American sitcom broadcast on CBS, ran from 1996 to 2005. The show revolved around the life of Ray Barone, a News Paper sportswriter from Long Island, his wife, Debra, daughter, Ally, and identical twin sons, Geoffrey and Michael. Ray has imposing parents and a jealous, insecure brother, Robert. They are found most of the time in the living room of Ray. Debra, Ray's wife is sick of this routine that had turned her in to a cranky yelling woman, but tolerates for the love of her husband. Ray’s parents and brother never give Ray or his family a moment of peace. Ray often finds himself in the middle of someone else's problems. He is usually the one blamed for everyone else's troubles. Based on the real-life experiences of Ray Romano, Everybody Loves Raymond premiered on September 13, 1996, on CBS. The series finale was broadcast on May 16, 2005, though old episodes are still rerun on cable network TBS and in daily syndication.
